Rise of Skywalker is a decent pair of movies. I just wish those movies were not forced to be in the same movie. Of course, that is more the fault of Rian "franchise breaker" Johnson than Rise of Skywalker.
Yeah at least for films. It’s funny how the new sequels were supposed to rinse away the taste of the prequels only for them to renew interest in them. Now people are cheering for the return of Hayden as Vader.
It's also not like Disney has 300 people vetting and checking all things that happened in Last Jedi before it got shipped. Putting the blame just on Rian Johnson is just weird in my eyes.
They needed someone like Kevin Feige keeping everyone reigned in. They had no plan. So Rian would just throw away what the previous film established just because and then JJ did the same when he returned.
It’s crazy how the last two Avengers film were able to make a cohesive narrative from disparate series like Guardians and Antman while the new Star Wars universe fell apart within three movies.
I think the Last Jedi was what crashed the Star Wars movie. It basically drove the Star Wars tropes into the ground, or made us question bits of internal logic.
But yeah, they certainly should have had a plan, not just attempting to wing it. It shouldn't have been that hard, all things considered.
He is the director, the buck stops with him. It is in the job description to be taker of the blame when things go wahoonie shaped, just as it is to take the plaudits when it all comes up smelling of lilac.
Ah, but the problem with that logic was, side trip to the gambling planet aside, the Last Jedi was a fine film. Rey's storyarc, the questioning of 'royal bloodlines' of the Force, the growth that Finn & Poe went on... it was a great film.
The problem was that it wasn't a great middle part of a trilogy. And that's not really on the director, he did a great film. It's on Disney, or whichever exec you want to pin it on, for not managing their trilogy correctly.
If they saw Rian's script, and were just so in love with it that they couldn't change it... they should've just changed the 'trilogy' into four films. Easy fix. Or they should've written a better finale picking up the themes that Last Jedi laid out.
Instead they threw out the villain, threw out the developed backstories, and threw out the themes that Last Jedi established.
None of that lays at Rian's feet. He made what was probably the best film of the trilogy judged on individual merits.
I would've loved if Star Wars actually continued from that. Just going "Hey maybe force dynasties are bad and maybe we should question these hierarchies. Maybe you don't have to have royal blood to be talented or important. Maybe the actions of common people should be treated with the same respect of those who inherited power. Maybe instead of worshipping and rehashing all this lore, we should build something new and say something that extends beyond it.".
But alas this is Disney and a billion dollar IP.
If nothing else it makes me appreciate the Rebuild of Evangelion Movies more. That may have also started off as a nostalgia fueled mercenary endeavor with an IP that's worshipped but it wasn't afraid to break itself and challenge it's lore/audience to say something new a personal.
Honestly, I think it's Disney's fault for not actually knowing what they were making from the very start. If they didn't want Rian Johnson to make The Last Jedi the way he did, they didn't have to. If they wanted to basically just rehash the original trilogy, they should have done that. Rise of Skywalker is two movies, I suppose, but at least a third of its runtime is irrelevant to the overall plot, as it struggles to find meaningful things for half the cast to do, IMHO. It sidelines characters, introduces new characters who never have a chance to do anything meaningful and engages in a lot of effort to erase much of the material of the previous film.
Personally, the idea of not having Force Ghost Luke fighting zombie clone Palpatine in the last movie is an enormous waste, IMHO. Id' have loved to see the kids fighting a bunch on Snoke clones while Luke and Palpatine destroyed each other, restoring balance to the force.
The giant spider on the head was also developed for that film, but was cut from the final version. It makes just as much sense as anything else in that film.
I only recognized Bogg because of his distinctive character design. After The Rise of Skywalker, people found some concept art for him in a Korean art book and fans speculated about how much better Trevorrow's film might have been if it had stuff like an evil Sith puppet hanging out in the wilderness like an anti-Yoda.
Then someone leaked the Trevorrow screenplay, and nope, it's also really bad.
Didn't recognize Ochi, but I'm not sure we ever get a good look at him in TROS.
Is this following on from when Palpatine left Vader to fend for himself and not use the Force? He seems more intact and functional than I thought he would be.
