Bao's an interesting case. While like a lot of comic-book killer vigilantes, he's set motivated partially by a quest for personal vengeance, he took up the bat (heh) when Joker and his clowns weren't just committing crimes, they were outright waging war on Gotham.
I've enjoyed what I've seen of his trying to find his place in a relatively "peacetime," Gotham and his interactions with Batman and Harley considerably more than is usually the case with the "to kill or not kill" vigilante argument in Batbooks.
Agreed. Instead of the usual "it makes you as bad as them!!!" spiel that sounds more and more empty the more they repeat it, they addressed Bao's situation with a refreshing mix of compassion, common sense and pragmatism.
I have zero hopes that subsequent writers won't make him jump off the slippery slope because of course they will, they can't even get it through their heads that evil is not genetic. But as of the current run? I think the writer did a fantastic job with Bao.
I used to think of James Tynion IV as "just" a fill-in writer. I was wrong and I apologize. He managed to take another Joker Attacks Gotham story and make it interesting, Punchline aside. So far Something Is Killing The Children is rather good. Mr. Tynion, I was wrong and I apologize.
Plus, it's always a delight to see James Stokoe's art.
