Donald Blake was based on Keith Kincaid, who later married Jane. His death and the death of their son, Jimmy, was in MIGHTY THOR #704.

Superhero comics do "existential crisis drives a character crazy" remarkably often. Swamp Thing realizing "I'm not and never was Alec Holland" might be the Ur-example.

Donny Cates seems to have two approaches to continuity and bringing back old concepts/characters: using them in cool and novel ways, or brutally and gruesomely culling them.
