He's not a good writer but calling him the next Mark Millar is a little harsh

How is Millar “ horrifically racist, misogynistic and homophobic”? I don’t feel like going through everything he ever wrote but at minimum he had a gay superhero couple adopt a child way back in the early 2000s and more recently did a comic about a gay closeted superhero so I doubt he hates gay people. On top of that his current Kick-Ass comic has a black woman as the protagonist.

Oh, c'mon. Mark "amazing, a black guy with Down syndrome" Millar? Mark "Rape of Wonder Woman" Millar? Mark "endorsed anti-gay marriage politicians" Millar?

You can't just say, he wrote stories with Black and gay and female protagonists, therefore he can't be bigoted against them. And even if we are digging into everything he ever wrote, you can't ignore his use of rape for shock value, or the casual homophobic slurs and skeevy racial tropes in Kick-Ass, and so on.

Indeed

A writer including characters in their work who are LGBTQ or who aren't white doesn't automatically make them an ally or progressive. It's how the characters are written that matters, not simply their existence

I wouldn't call Trey Parker and Matt Stone allies of the LGBTQ community for creating Mr Garrison in South Park, for instance

Also If the married gay couple with a kid refers to Apollo and Midnighter, Millar didn't create either of those characters. He just got hired to write a book in which they appeared. So did Chuck Dixon and I wouldn't call that talentless bigot an LGBTQ ally either.

There’s a difference between just writing gay characters and writing gay characters that get you honored by GLAAD. Openly gay characters back then was a huge deal. He also spoke out against homophobic legislature in the UK years ago so this is all quite a bit of effort for someone who’s secretly anti-gay to pretend he isn’t.

He’s edgy and has a dark sense of humour, but I don’t think he really buys the questionable stuff he puts on page himself.

Hyped-up stories that coast on their elevator pitch - they're got distinct moments you'll remember, because the writer definitely has ability, but even those moments aren't much more than minor developments from that original pitch.

This bit's got Thor's speech culminating in " .. and I have had enough!! " (which, talking about Millar, looks like a riff on " THOU ART NO THOR! "), but Ryan Stegman's art is the only thing making this bit anything more than " villain postures, hero strikes a blow, villain reels, villain counters, things look dire, but then.. ".

The choreography of Knull grabbing Thor but letting go before he stabs him is a bit confusing, though. I thought he was pulling him close, but he's at arm's length in the next panel!

I am actually not a big fan of Stegman's art here (or Capullo's on Death Metal). They are fine for solo books or even small team books, but I really pine for a George Perez-style artist on big crossovers. Speaking of, is Phil Jimenez doing anything anymore?

Part of me wants to figure out the casualty counts in megadeaths, but hey, it's comics, so there'll be a cosmic reset button soon enough. Also, given how gratuitously OTT everything is, the cosmic reset button's likely to be some kind of magic something.

As far as resets go, still better than Secret Empire where all those people who tied their lot in with literal nazis just got to back to living normal lives.

(I wonder if we'll get a Symbiote Kill Krew spinoff out of this, starring Frank Castle.)

Eh, I prefer Knull to Batman Who Laughs. At least Knull hasn’t overstayed his welcome yet and is an original villain who doesn’t hog the spotlight from the ensemble, and I do feel genuinely threatened with him.
