NoScans - Some interesting DC/Vertigo casting news

News has emerged about casting for the Sandman TV series, and a new addition to the Titans line up.



So here we go:



Sturridge I don't recall from anything (though he certainly has the cheekbones for the role)

Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer might just be the most amazing bit of casting I've heard in a very long time. As soon as you hear it it's like "Hunh... well, of course she would be." (It'll certainly be a different take from Tom Ellis' Lucifer)

Lucian the Librarian becoming Lucienne seems perfectly cromulent.

Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, the man who captures Dream, is almost inevitable in everything these days, but more power to him for that.

And I am slightly fascinated by the concept of Cain and Abel, two characters so profoundly wrapped up in Judeo-Christian theology being played by two Asian-British actors.



Savannah Welch has been announced as playing Barbara Gordon in Titans. An actress who lost a leg in an accident a few years ago, she has posted a video of her combat training from a seated position so it looks like we might get some "serious wheelchair combat Oracle" which is as it should be.

And we now have a THIRD Robin in the series as Jay Lycurgo has been cast as Tim Drake. (Which means we have an Australian actor playing Nightwing and a British actor playing Robin)



Ryan Potter, currently Beast Boy in the Titans, and oft mentioned for the role of Tim Drake (especiall by Ryan Potter, has been very enthusiastic about another piece of biracial casting.

Ironically Lycurgo has a small part in the upcoming "The Batman" movie playing a gang member who has to deal with Batman.

Gotta say, Chaudry LOOKS like Abel. I'm not familiar with him, so I don't know how he is as an actor, but if I wanted to cast someone based on appearance, he'd be at the top of the list.

Christie as Lucifer I can get behind, if only because I can get behind Christie in anything. (... ... OK, that wasn't meant to sound as dirty as it does, but I'm gonna leave it.)

Dance hits both the good actor and looking like the character part.

And Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer?

Unless God is someone like Jaime Murray or Idris Elba, who the hell would want to go to heaven when satan is this hot?

I like the idea of Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer. It's not as if David Bowie can be asked to play the role.

Gwendoline Christie just worked with Gaiman on The Sleeper and the Spindle, and that turned out great. They even used the same headshot for her. Clearly things went well behind the scenes.

According to IMDB, I haven't seen Tom Sturridge in anything since... the '90s Gulliver's Travels miniseries. He was 11.

Honestly, I'm happy with all this news. More Charles Dance? Biracial Tim Drake? Yes and yes.

As has been pointed out elsewhere, Tom Sturridge will make Dream the Neil Gaiman self-insert character he was always meant to be.

I had Price on the brain because it's explicitly said in "The Parliament of Rooks" that Cain sounds like him - but Wein would be another interesting impression, if he had a unique way of speaking...

Lucien re-casting feels a bit forced to me -- hopefully she's a good enough fit that I get over it quickly.

Jeez, either there's a serious timeskip between seasons of Titans or that version of Bruce is replacing Robins way too quickly. Like Jason wasn't even killed, he just quit the Titans after the rest of them were super horrible to him for no good reason to the point he was goddamn suicidal. It's not that this doesn't seem like good casting for Tim, it just that it doesn't even seem like Tim should be in the picture yet.

Sliding scales of comic book time means that the average duration for a Robin will soon be a summer internship.

Which is, depressingly, in line with what the New52 established: Dick, Jason and Tim were each only Robin for a year each before graduating to high collars and plunging necklines, being dead, or renaming yourself after an American fast-food chain, because apparently Dick wasn't allowed to be older than 21.

Mercifully pretty much every creator ignored that completely within a month or two.

The best answer is probably just not to look too closely at the timeline. But if you like picking at continuity the way I do, there's three basic solutions- either Bruce's career as Batman/serial adopter started very young, it happened over a fairly brief period, or Batman's starting to get up there in age. Personally, I'd favor the last of these, with Bruce gradually aging into a superhero patriarch whose contributions are as much training and advising the next generation of crime fighters as it is suiting up to put Bat-Boot to ass himself, but that's just not how comics work.

Not sure about the Lucien recast because he is such a huge part of the Dreaming like Merv Pumpkinhead and Matthew the Raven. If it was another character like the Fashion Thing or maybe Nuala it would work better for me, but still, I will reserve judgment. The reason why I am so invested was that I remember his original appearance in the 70s. Lucien, created by Paul Levitz, Nestor Redondo, and Joe Orlando, was originally the host of a 1970s "weird tales" comic, specifically the three-issue Tales of Ghost Castle (May-June–October 1975). In that series, he is portrayed as the guardian of a castle in Transylvania abandoned by both sides during World War II, watching over its forgotten library with his companion, a werewolf named Rover.

The only thing I've seen Sturridge in is Velvet Buzzsaw and I was less than impressed by him there. I hope he can handle the role.

No such worries about Gwendoline Christie (whom I consider only slightly less perfect for the role than Bowie-alike Tilda Swinton) or Charles Dance.
