Ah... setup for Rise of Skywalker, possible the worst fate for any piece of media. It helps legitimize that train wreck, which it does not deserve.

I do wonder which of these characters is going to survive...

Yep, we know the other guy will be fine because he still needs to:

-Commission a special dagger with a hidden slot that gives a clue when used at a completely arbitrary location because he can't remember "The Emperor's throne room."

-Search for Rey, find the Emperor's clone son and his baby mama on Jakku, within seeing distance of Rey.

-Believe Rey's mom literally saying "she's not on Jakku" and go to some other planet for some goddamn reason.

-Fall down a hole and die.

Yep, sure am glad we're getting to know THIS compelling character's backstory. I'm sure he'll be getting his own Disney+ spinoff any day now, right after Chewbacca's creepy dad Itchy.

He’s just an assassin for Vader to beat up. It’s not like Pak is wasting our time trying to show how cool he is.

Well, he's not *just* an assassin. He's also the guy who's going to orphan Rey.

Pak's doing some very heavy lifting here trying to make both the assassin guy and Exegol work, and I don't hate it. There's something deeply funny to the realization that the most likely course for the next decade or so of non-High Republic stuff is going to be putting lipstick on the pig that is Rise of Skywalker.

It’s been like this for the new trilogy since the start, the movies will just throw stuff with no explanation and it’s up to the others to try to make sense of everything . I.e. “How did you get Luke’s lightsaber?” “That’s a tale for another day.” So then the comics will come up with a story as to how it was found.

Or even just character beats that the films should have covered like Luke reacting to Han’s death. That should have been in the movies but it was left to the comics.

I do think Pak’s doing a good job in delivering all this stuff in an organic fashion as opposed to just a heavy exposition dump. Maybe he’ll find a way to have Palpatine having an entire secret Sith cultist planet work.
