King in Black: The Black Knight #1

He has what every great character needs in spades: inner conflict. For me, the tragedy is that there have been so many attempts to say he's this, or he's that, and to fit him into these manufactured niches which often contradict each other, when there was a far simpler solution all along: You simply ask him to accept that he's a mess. -- Si Spurrier

(still, you get Spurrier to write, you get Spurrier writing. This package of peanuts may contain nuts.)
-"First of the Black Knights"-
"Unless you count that story from New Excalibur where Sir Percy stated that actually there'd been dozens before him. We ignoring that now? Okay, cool.
(Not like anyone actually cares about a filler story from New Excalibur anyhow. Just checking, is all.)"

This is a guy who is an Avenger, a Hero for Hire, a member of MI13, a former paramour of an Eternal, the leader of a team from *another comic book company*, and is tied up with the origin of one of the mutants on the X-Book's Council.
Plus he's wielded an Ebony Blade. A blade of... something from the heroes for Hire book. Possibly multiple fake ebony blades. (They hand one out with every Doombot you fight) And a light saber. And sometimes he has a flying horse.
Continuity is not his strong suite.

Date: 2021-03-03 11:11 pm (UTC)There is a difference between "complicated" and "contradictory" continuity, but I think Dane Whitman has been subject to both. The first, in all the ways you've mentioned, but they also throw him around for time travel hijinks, where sometimes its' him, sometimes it's him inhabiting a body, and so he has a habit of knowing people in a disjointed chronological order.
