Yeah, I'm definitely looking askance at this. Maybe it's supposed to be just Echo drawing connections, but taken at face value it seems kind of clueless on Aaron's part.

Well, for once something from Aaron that I can agree with.
Echo gets some spotlights, and the longer the Phoenix is kept away from the X-Men, the better it is.

That would require research into the history of Marvel's characters going back decades, and the decision to make the new Phoenix host someone with a pre-existing if ambiguous potential connection to it.
