X-Men might be worth reading now somebody else is writing it. Marauders is one of my favourite X-Titles at the moment, so let's hope that Duggan keeps it up with tthe new X-Men team.

Sad that Immortal Hulk is coming to an end. Can Al Ewing write all the things?

I liked Hickman's X-men but I am not complaining that Duggan is taking it over as Marauders is my favourite of the current crop of X-men books

Running through these:

Amazing Fantasy should be, at minimum, nice to look at. I don't love Kaare Andrew's instincts as a writer, but his art is always great.

Extreme Carnage makes me very tired, because I can't believe that Marvel's just all in on regularly scheduled Venom-based events, especially when King in Black has only barely wrapped up. That said, if Marvel is insistent on making the symbiotes a whole corner of the Marvel Universe it's well past time that they gave the ones besides Carnage and Venom a chance to be treated like actual characters. There is actually some potential there.

A new Moon Knight book! Very cool. It's hard to look back fondly on the Ellis-written relaunch anymore, but it was cool that for a while Moon Knight was this creator-driven jam book. I doubt that this will get back to that, after the Lemire and Bemis runs, but still, it'd be nice.

So, is Symbiote Spider-Man one of those books that's basically just a pension for an old guy who the bosses like, but they can't give him an actual pension because the comics industry is a hellscape?

My thoughts about United States of Captain America are... probably too spicy to get into and they come from me as a Canadian, but it's still very weird. Feels similar to Waid and Samnee's deliberately retro, inoffensive run on the character post-Secret Wars.

Salvador Larroca and his screenshotted Alien toys continue to pump out comics, I see.

I hadn't realized that Valentine De Landro was drawing X-Corp. I loved the look of his Mister Miracle stuff in Future State, so that's very exciting.

Curious to see Spurrier return to writing Legion/David Haller in Way of X. I always hated the ending he wrote for that character in X-Men Legacy (it's a romanticized suicide, whatever metafictional bullshit you wrap it up in!), so it'll be interesting to see what he does with him now.

About Miles Morales: Spider-Man, does anyone else feel like Saladin Ahmed's writing has lost a step? He had that incredible debut with Black Bolt, but his Spider-Man run seems to have languished, between rehashing Ultimate Universe continuity stuff that can't be interest for new readers, and now rehashing yet another (largely despised!) Peter Parker story.

It's still wild to me that Reptil, the sensation character find of 2010, last prominently featured around 2013, is getting a spotlight series.

Is War of the Bounty Hunters the first time Marvel's Star Wars comics have done an event? Because I can't take that as a positive indication of the line's quality or health.

Saladin’s run has been pretty mediocre. He really dropped the ball with the 616 Miles/Goblin arc. Evil Miles was turned into a generic supervillain and Norman Osborn into just another brute.

I find that kind of funny how The Last Annihilation is apparently devastation not seen since the first one when they just did Knull and his terrifying tirade across the entire universe.

I believe the Star Wars comics have had a crossover or two before (the first being Vader Down and the second((?)) I think involving Doctor Aphra and Luke in a prison?).

Quite possibly. PAD's writing has become impenetrably self-referential. How many times has he used the Maestro at this point, or obscure 2099 characters he created, or continued plotlines he had to drop a decade ago? I can't see a crossover with the Hulk circa 1987 bringing in a lot of new readers.

I is tentative. Empyre was kind of meh, and even without that there hasn't been a good Cosmic Marvel event since 2010.

Though Marvel does like going back to that Annihilation well.

I think that is indeed the Maestro on that Gamma Flight cover. I guess at least Ewing has a track record with the character, but Marvel has really been trotting the Maestro out a lot lately.

The Last Annihilation will likely be better than Empyre, purely because Al Ewing's writing isn't shackled to Dan Slott's much shittier writing.

Is Red Room Widow her most iconic version? I probably would've gone with Avengers Black Widow, or Independent Operator With Ties to SHIELD. Though I guess if you're plucking heroes from across the timescape, it makes sense to grab some of them pre Heel-Face-Turn. (WW2 Cap and Teen!Spider-Man make a certain amount of sense- that's usually where adaptations or reboots will start them off at again, even if WW2 isn't immediately where I go when I think of Cap).

Speaking of... I guess I haven't really been following the Spider-books. Is Ock full in on eight legged supervillainy again?

And oh man, debates over Krakoa's sometimes aggressive recruitment policy aside, fighting Shang-Chi in his own book? With a movie coming out? I feel like Logan's gonna have a tough time.

Yeah, I think it's because they're going "early in their careers" and also they want to pick multiple cultures to clash with. But I would be dishonest if I didn't think movie $ynergy didn't play a role.

Has Mister Sinister ever formed a Sinister Six? I'm sure he'd be delighted to study Spider-Man since Spidey is a powerful mutate. I really want a story where he tries to take charge of some of Spider-Man's mad scientist villains--the Lizard, the Jackal, Doc Ock, Molten Man, and Vulture--while critiquing their lack of imagination in both a scientific and sartorial sense.

I really love Al Ewing, from his Avengers books to Immortal Hulk to his Contest of Champions tie-in, but neither SWORD nor his Guardians of the Galaxy run have really excited me that much. I think part of what makes a Ewing book exciting for me is how skilled he is at reinventing, recontextualizing, or simply rediscovering characters and the infectious joy he seems to take from doing so. I felt a little bit of that early in his GotG run with Marvel Boy and it's nice having him write Rocket Raccoon again, though on the whole, the book hasn't really grabbed me?

Ditto SWORD, which I've only read two issues of on Marvel Unlimited... this book seems like it's really going to be hamstrung by events (in typical Ewing fashion). As a concept, SWORD is a pretty hard book to write as an ongoing. In issue 1, they boast about how they're going to take protecting the Earth from extraterrestrial threats more seriously, then issue 2 opens after Earth has already been conquered by the god of edgelords. Nice job!

I think the only time Essex ever got involved with any Spidey-folk was when he (in 2009's X-Men/Spider-Man) hired Kraven to steal DNA samples from the original X-Men, and later used those samples, a sample from Kraven himself, and a bit of Carnage symbiote to create Xraven, which had all the abilities & skills of Kraven and the O5 X-Men.

Man, I really don’t like how progressively Banner-ish they’ve made She-Hulk. I’m honestly surprised she’s gone on as long as she has when grey She-Hulk was cut so short. At least Grey She-Hulk still felt like the same character, I don’t know why they didn’t just keep using her. I think information_geek wrote a good article on the problems I have with her nowadays.

The problem is she's in the hands of Jason Aaron at the moment, and has been since he started on Avengers... three years ago? However long it's been since Secret Empire.

Somewhere around the time the Disney+ series is coming out, she'll probably get a reset to make her more like however they portray her.

Vulture vs Otto is kind of weird. On one hand you have a genius-level mad scientist who came close to ending the world, on the other you have an old guy who can fly. I know Spencer tried to make him someone who was able to manipulate other villains but...

I can buy it. Vulture doesn't get nearly enough credit for how smart and ruthless he can be.

I'm more bothered by Otto's team.

Hydro Man on a team with Sandman is a bad idea. Hydro Man on a team with Electro (hey, Max is back) is a bad idea. Hydro Man on a team with both is a beyond stupid.

On the one hand, Kraven is a solid choice to combat the animal-themed Savage Six. On the other hand, he's suicidal.

Why the heck is the Lizard there? If Conners is in control he's going to betray the team to Spider-Man. If Conners is struggling with the beast inside then the one thing they can agree on is that Kraven needs to die. If the Lizard is in control then he's just going to try to kill ALL the filthy mammals.

I guess this is what happens when Otto burns most of his bridges and Mysterio won't answer his phone.

Kinda amazed none of Boomerang's gang (other than Rhino from the Syndicate days) made it onto either team.

I must admit that, as much as I hate the need to keep going back to "iconic" versions of heroes like teenaged Spider-man, the Amazing Fantasy book hits far too many "TheZMage-bait" points for me to ignore it.

Is it just me, or does everything about X-Corp read like Vincent Adultman talking about having a long day at the business factory or Vision in Wandavision trying to find out what his company does? Like, what does X-Corp do? All the solicits make it seem like they just churn out status reports and performance evaluations without any actual status or performance to speak of

Oh, Marvel cashes in the isekai trend. It's also laughable how they keep trying to shoehorn Sunfire as the Asian mutant when there's a handful of much better known female Asian and Asian American mutants they can add to X-Men rooster but always forget they exist.
