I really should like this way more than I do. It's impassioned storytelling about comics history from a guy who made a lot of waves when I was growing up. And unlike earlier installments, this one has a target that justifies its angry character assassinations.
I think the issue for me is that when Chaykin strips out the pulpy thrill of his sex, violence, and escapism, it's just us, him, and his view of the world, and that view of the world is one I just don't care for very much. The captions telling me what to think don't help.
That font choice, especially drop-shadow white on dark green? That's really hard to read, for me. Honestly, I want to like this, but I've already seen it done better, elsewhere. Chaykin's artwork remains solid and his story-telling skills are fine, I guess, but...I just don't like this very much, I guess. Comics history is complex and I feel like this is a real reductive version of it.
