I'll preface by saying that this comic is technically not written by Joe Hill. Rather it's based off a short story he wrote with Jason Ciaramella adapting it.

This scene here is a somewhat significant change from the original short story. In the short story Mal is the one who steals the old man's ring for reasons she doesn't really know. Maybe Ciaramella thought this would have made the protagonist too detestable on top of everything else?
