They were shaped charges it's fine. He blows up without any injury because that is how explosions work

There was an extended scene about a Hydrogen powered car in Odyssey as well. One of Adams's pet subjects, I suppose.

(Though there it was largely everyone at the scene (Batman, the car's designer, a small child) calmly explaining to the gun wielding saboteur that no, the car wouldn't explode no matter how many times he shot it).
