My favorite thing about comics is that basically, comics is a real equal playing field to get an artist and a writer, or an artist by themselves really, and then 22 pages later it doesn’t matter if you’re from Marvel or DC or anyone else — you’re all basically doing the same thing. For me, Once and Future is better than anything Marvel or DC is putting out and it’s doing a similar sort of thing because this is a fun action comic. But with totally new characters with a strong mythic bent. I quite like you can do something that is utterly mainstream but with the volume turned up and the freedom that you allowed to do from a clean start. Dan is a mainstream pop phenomenon. People who read the book, it’ll take the top of their heads off. -- Kieron Gillen

So, who's gonna tell Arthur that Boris Johnson WASN'T a king, but merely the Prime Minister to Queen Elizabeth?

Enh. Not that simple. The PM is essentially the head (heh) operative of 'The Crown', aterm referring to himself and his Cabinet, who wield Executive power on the Queen's behalf. While the Royals can apparently wield discretionary choice over key laws behind closed doors, a convention of UK law is that the Queen can't be seen to use her power directly, especislly to undermine parliament, because we fought a civil war over that one time.

Think Denethor the steward, in a world where Aragorn was prevented from takingthe throne of Gondor by law.

You mean tell him there are some norman-french-hanoverian-dutch aristos to also kill? Are we threatening him with a good time, or what.

Eh, let's be honest, when it comes to the inhabitants of the UK, it's invaders all the way down.

I liked the whole talk with Duncan and Gran at the end of the issue.

It feels like processing the feelings of Brexit, the Financial Crisis, Climate Change, the Pandemic etc. Due to circumstances outside of your control and the malicious actions of the people in power your plans for a quiet life have shattered. Your savings are gone and the world has gone to hell.

The future you planned for has crumbled, the better world you were supposed to pass along to the next generation is replaced by recession, austerity, war and debt. You have to keep working because the economy and government systems are so broken that nobody can retire. Nobody is going to be the adult in the room who'll fix things, because all of the adults in the room are corrupt and incompetent.

And in the face of this apocalypse, the only thing you can do is say "We'll make the best of it.".
