Marvel have announced the next part of Jonathan Hickman's X-Men

And the name is another flashback to an older story, perhaps also retaining/renewing copyright (or somesuch, I always get those ones mixed up)?
Promises were made and broken. The rulers of Krakoa have been playing a dangerous game with a dangerous woman, and they are about to see how badly that can burn them. Having been denied her wishes yet again, Mystique is ready to follow through on her promise to burn the nation of Krakoa to the ground. Mutantkind’s bright future is threatened like never before as Hickman brings his game-changing plans to a head. Fans can expect more revelations from the lives of Moira MacTaggert, Nimrod’s revenge, vicious power plays, and more in this pivotal chapter in X-Men history. Throughout this four-issue limited series, Hickman will be joined by an incredible lineup of artists beginning with acclaimed illustrator Valerio Schiti. Known for masterfully depicting large-scale action alongside intense human drama, the S.W.O.R.D. and EMPYRE artist is perfect for bringing this heartbreaking saga to life.
"I’m very excited that we’re finally getting to share with everyone the follow-up to HOUSE OF X/POWERS OF X,” Hickman said. “The story is 160 pages over four issues drawn exquisitely by Valerio Schiti, R.B. Silva and Stefano Caselli. I cannot wait for people to read it.”
In what is now an X-Men tradition, superstar artist Mark Brooks has delivered another stunning piece of teaser artwork for this latest X-Men milestone. An homage to his earlier HOUSE OF X/POWERS OF X piece, it depicts all the major players of Krakoa as they brace themselves for their biggest shakeup yet. Check it out above, and be there in September when the biggest secrets of Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men run burn away in INFERNO #1.

Yeah, the Quiet Council playing games with Mystique, and over Destiny of all things, never seemed like agood remotely sane idea.

"Blame Cyclops."
Four issues seems unusually brief for Hickman. How's he going to squeeze in all the necessary purple prose in such a short span?
So if this is Inferno-in-name-only, will the next big thing after that be the X-Tinction Agenda?

Date: 2021-06-05 09:29 pm (UTC)I mean, why do they PRIORITIZE resurrecting troublesome mutants like Mystique or Empath when there's a queue millions long? Leave them dead until you need them for something, and things will be a lot quieter.

Jean: Charles, probably. Why do we still go along with whatever he does, again?
Scott: I don't know... Anyway, with Mystique, and Deadpool wanting to kill us over Cable...
Logan: That one IS your fault...
Scott: Yeah, but at least that doesn't have anything to do with Mystique...
Raven: And now, my revenge! That my new best friend Deadpool has made possible! Why, if he didn't have a massive grudge, too, then I would never have been able to do this!
Scott: Dammit!

Date: 2021-06-05 07:56 pm (UTC)Destiny, that's something else. She doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would value her life or her interests more than the safety and happyness of her fellow mutants. So if she told Raven to burn everything, it can't be just she's mad at not being resurrected. It's because she believes that the "no precog" rule is the proof that Krakoa is either a huge mistake or a big trap for mutants.
(on a personal note, since they killed Santo and his death was forgotten after a couple of issues, I also kinda want to see Krakoa burning)

Date: 2021-06-05 08:37 pm (UTC)I've increasingly been feeling like the X-line has been defined by those kind of baggy crossovers (X of Swords, the Hellfire Gala, the upcoming Trial of Magneto) while the main books tread water, so Hickman actually moving any of his big plot points forwards is quite welcome. All it took was two years and him literally passing off X-Men as a title to another writer before he looped back around to having anything (potentially) pay off. Truly, Hickman is a master of economical storytelling.
It really is a little aggravating so see Hickman describing this as the follow up to HoX/PoX, because it's like, well then what have the past two years been? Having they just be wasting our time with everything since Dawn of X?

Date: 2021-06-05 10:15 pm (UTC)Like his Avengers run. Forty-odd issues of Avengers and twenty-odd of New Avengers, as well as Infinity and the nine issues of Secret Wars, blowing up all the Marvel multiverse just so Reed Richards could learn "hmm, maybe nihilism is wrong."
(If we just got the Hickman who'd wrote Fantastic Four, rather than Avengers Hickman...)
