In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
As we approach the fourteenth week of Junuary in this Year of our Deliveroo Driver 2020 1/2, I find that time is starting to lose cohesion again, and we'll shortly be at the Summer Solstice. Wasn't Christmasween just a month or so back? Weird.
The UK Government has caused yet more chaos by shifting Protugal back onto it's Amber list of places to visit (requiring self-isolation on return) at very short notice, AFTER previously putting it on the Green list (with no isolation required). So everyone who dashed over there at the first opportunity for a holiday was now dashing back to beat the dealdine or facing another two weeks of self-isolation. This has been greeted about as well as one might expect.
The US has approved it's first new drug for treating Alzheimer's in 20 years, though the efficacy of the drug, which targets the underlying cause of Alzheimers rather than the symptoms, is still hotly debated. Still, hopefully a step in the right direction.
In a frankly impressive sting operation, the FBI and Australian intelligence agency created a private messaging app called "ANOM", which was then more or less marketed to criminals as a totally secure means of sending details about any number of illicit activities, all the while monitoring everything that happened on it. Over 800 arrests have ensued.
Also, a recent ransomware attack backfired when the FBI managed to steal the ransom BACK by getting hold of the encryption key for the Bitcoin wallet involved. Though they are being very coy about HOW they did it.
"I am impressed by both of the above" and "I am worried about the obvious implications for general privacy and security" are statements that can co-exist.
"The Bad Batch" is a series I'm still finding it a little hard to get into. I can see the aim, it's sort of interesting to see the Empire getting itself established, and Dee Bradley Baker is doing terrific work as the entire Bunch (apart from Omega, but even then I felt it wise to check the credits, just in case) but I'm still finding it a little tough to.. well, care about them much.
It was fun to here Rhea Perlman get what looks to be a recurring role as their agent though! And since I'm also still wondering what Omega's skillset is going to turn out to be, I suppose if they've got me watching another episode to find out they're doing what they set out to do.
Jensen Ackles has had photos released of him as Soldier Boy for the next season of "The Boys". It's a good look, but since I'm not a fan of the series, I'll just appreciate the aesthetics.
Random question of the week: What IS your bitcoin wallet key... No? Oh well, worth a try! :)

Date: 2021-06-08 11:12 am (UTC)• Rainbow capitalism is almost nonexistent. This year Ikea is selling rainbow bags and for a few years Ben & Jerry’s been selling limited edition ice cream, but that’s it. Businesses are scared of being sued by citizens claiming anything pro-LGBT is offending their religious feelings. Ikea is being taken to court right now.
• Talking about pride parade, there’s one, only Warsaw pride, with the exceptions in 2018 and 2019. And even Warsaw pride has to fight the mayor who wants to cancel it every time. Every bloody time, regardless of the politics of the mayors. Mayor of Gdańsk allowed a pride in 2017 but he’s the guy who was killed, so you have a picture.
• Pride is a political manifestation. So no sponsors, rarely even vechicles, no crazy costumes, and actually very likely more allies than queer people themselves. Marchers are dressed in a rather boring way, and there are many flags – rainbow, trans, bi, an ace/aro/enby flag or two, and LOTS of European Union flags. Very rare to find a lesbian flag though. Nobody wears fetish wear, but bear/BDSM/poly flags happen from time to time.
• Every pride event has massive police precence, riot gear, trained dogs, armored vechicles, all the stuff. Why? Because every time there’s at least as many countermanifestaries as the marchers, and they are very aggressive. Attacking both marchers and the police, destroying both public property and private businesses. The cities fucking burn. In 2019 the police let them do whatever they wanted in Białystok, ending with a massive riot and a massacre. So, while I have no doubt the policemen themselves don’t give a shit about the queers, I’d refuse to walk in a pride march not protected by lots of police. Talk about conflicting needs, etc.
• In 2020 pride events could happen only with less than 80 participants, so honestly from my perspective there was no pride last year. Dunno if anything happens this year. Bans can happen last second, especially since the governning party is dismanling the jusdical system to smash it’s opponents, even when said opponents are Belarussian activist who seek allyship against Lukashenko – PIS and Lukashenko are BFFs.
• There’s one LGBT org in my province and it is located in a concealed basement. You wouln’t know it’s there unless you were told. We were attacked a few times too. The steel-enforced doors did a good job.
• Oh and in 2019 there was a terrorist bombing attack averted last second against a pride march. So there’s that.
• It could be worse though. At least it’s not Belarus. Yet. That said, while Poland may be the worst place within the EU (and one of the worst in Europe) to live as a queer person, it’s pretty decent place for world standards overall. Same sex and same sex relationships are legal, you can also change your legal gender. Queer media by themselves are legal, so are queer organisations. No protections and no legal recognition of relationships, even basic or locality limited ones as in Japan, but it very much could have been worse. Though it always frustrates me when Anglo-American fans criticize Japan when compared to vaguely-defined West, as here is technically West and it’s much worse in every aspect.
I’ve marathoned all Sailor Moon films, including the new ones (finally!), and man, in the 2021 films the fanservice is soooo cranked up, even the everyday school uniforms became miniskirts. Plus it really feels pervy how the new movies focus on romance between small girls and adolascent boys (it makes more sense in context, but it’s still kinda pervy). Plus, the first of the new movies managed to both have some unfortunate implications in its portrayal of gay/trans characters and hit my personal trigger of violence against animals. Also, when comparing old and new anime, it’s funny that a single old film („Promise of the Rose”, the one with the alien boy in love with Mamoru) can put more psychological depth and character developement in sixty minutes than the new anime does in four seasons. Also, Sailor Moon is waaay queerer than you remember it, both versions. Watch it for pride month, seriously, it’s perfect for June.
Zombieland Saga finally showed Yugiri’s backstory, and it’s surprisingly serious and honestly heartbreaking – instead of parodying genre conventions, it is a honest genre story. It made me sad. Some elements also made my theory-making mind go wild. At this point, I suspect reincarnation cycle is canon to the series.
In Love Nikki, I finished Starsea and Humanoid Source Code, my #2 favourite suit in the game. I feel smug because I managed to do it on a budget of only $2. I was considering crafting only the skin from Grice, as it is the most top scoring skin in the game and can be paired with most make ups, but people online keep saying that crafting it can take up to A YEAR, so it’s not really worth it :(
In my personal life, ther’s more death and violence. There’s been another instance of a man perceived as as gay being attacked in front of a supermarket, ending up with a broken nose and stitched forehead. The police will not be looking for the preparator of violence. In another instance, there were no physical damage to the victims, but instead they were sued for using physical force to protect themselves. It turns out the attacker was a policeman. Grandmother’s sister died of covid. She was the last surviving sibling. There’s been a deadly fire in which a refugee woman and her teen son lost their lives and her surviving sister lost all posessions. In good news, I wrote a fanfic for an exchange that ended up leading not exactly where I imagined it will go, but I’m honestly proud of it.

Date: 2021-06-08 11:24 am (UTC)I've finished watching Cobra Kai. It has many important themes about redemption, guiding the next generation, and how karate can be a powerful tool for good, but also potentially for evil. But ultimately good karate requires good judgment.
Oh my God, Gravity Falls has actually made it to DVD where I live. It took SEVEN years. Sure, it only includes three thirds of the first season, and I have no idea if they'll release the rest of it......actually that's kind of a downer.
hmm there was something else, but its gone now. Yes that's it the Providence compendium has been delayed.
I saw that some guy released a five-hour video on why Doctor Who's bad now. Now I am not a fan of Chibnall's work, but that seems excessive. I feel like I need to actually watch it in order to criticise it, but I don't quite hate myself enough to that.
The Blacksad comic I ordered arrived. It had seals in it, implying that aquatic mammals are also humanized in this world. Anyway, exciting news, apparently a new volume is coming out later this year. Hooray! But it will be part one of two.
I think one of my ideas could actually be quite good, having given it some thought.
The Bad Batch, has shown a mysterious person in a cloak, who I fear is either fan-service or a potential spin-off. They may further contradict a tie-in novel.
In Star Trek, I've learnt that Kirk has the ability to turn into someone else during fight scenes. I hope they explore this in later episodes. Also a Starfleet higher-up was willing to hush up an accidental death under his command, in order to avoid bad press.

Date: 2021-06-08 11:39 am (UTC)ConVergence, the local big science fiction convention, will have a in-person component in August, with a few restrictions. Must be vaccinated, masks mandatory (matching your costume is a bonus) and no children under vaccination age.
Now that things are opening up, I am in the market for a new desktop computer (this one has lasted far longer than expected, but is wheezing), any tips for someone who's not a kit-basher or good with hardware or software wrangling as to what's long term stable?
Over at my blog, I review a children's book with a bonkers premise: http://www.skjam.com/2021/06/06/book-review-the-banner-campfire-girls-at-the-white-house/ and also please check out my June first post.
Favorite takeaway? Chicken. But pizza is easier to get delivered.

Date: 2021-06-08 11:42 am (UTC)They also have coconut chicken, coconut shrimp, and peanut-butter sauce crispy chicken, but our of frustration over the last year I learned how to make those myself.
As for me: My job is re-opening the office next month, twice a week and working from home the rest. I'll cope with it I guess; I am like 40% more efficient working at home and not having to listen to the office gossip/babbling.
The Kevin Smith produced He-Man series is hitting Netflix in July. I hope it sticks because I love the voice cast.
I've been waiting for the next Cinder Spires book since about 2017, but author Jim Butcher has not said anything online at all since about December. Consider his Dresden books bore me senseless, this is frustrating.
Honestly? I keep looking and find myself thinking "there's nothing out there for me.". Shows I like end, get cancelled, or the wait is so long between seasons ( compared to other shows) that I forget or lose interest. The only video game that has my attention is Animal Crossing, but I got into it late and everyone I know isn't into it anymore. (E3's coming up, but I'm not expecting anything to get my attention.)
Heck, I stopped reading comics over a decade ago when almost every series I was reading got cancelled or when a new creative team started a "bold, New direction" (comics buzz-phrase for "we're gonna ignore anything that happened before and go out of our way to alienate the current fans." )
It making me frustrated; there's nothing there.

Date: 2021-06-08 11:46 am (UTC)Look, I'm super forgiving to and supportive of my students. I'm always, always helping them in tons of ways, on and off the book, and I've repeatedly closed one or both eyes to give them a not-so-little push.
But ultimately, if a student has earned [grade], you give them [grade]. Otherwise it's a blatant injustice to those students who actually put in the work.
Except that my Principal just arbitrarily decided to take my proposed grades and give 8 to some students who had earned a 6. "It encourages them!"
It encourages them my ass. If anything, it could cause the students who worked hard to go "next time I'm doing the bare minimum too since the result is the same."
I very strongly suspect it's something to do with funding. Like, a school gets more stuff if its students have high grades. The whole thing is a farce.

Date: 2021-06-08 12:54 pm (UTC)It doesn't need to be hot so there is no "I HAVE TO RUSH HOME OR IT WILL TASTE LIKE SHIT" pressure (and sure, I have a microwave, but reheated food tastes nowhere near as good as fresh out of the oven/pan). It's very clean to eat, it's almost impossible to get stains or sticky hands. And it's expensive but you pay about 30% less (standard discount + no service + no overcharged drinks) if you grab it as takeaway rather than eating at the restaurant, so it's the most economically-sound choice (I mean, short of not eating expensive food at all).

Date: 2021-06-08 11:48 am (UTC)(Namely, Tony Stark exiled on Sakaar. It'd never work with Comic Tony, but still... might've been worth a shot.)
Hasbro revealed one of the upcoming exclusives for Kingdom is... Skywarp, the eagle from Beast Wars II.
... not the Airrazor retool I was expecting. Especially since Hasbro doesn't tend to do BWII references. (I was hoping for a Stiletto... *sigh* maybe next time?)
Decided to read one of them The High Republic Star Wars books.
It was interesting.
(though it is kind of hard to get m' head around the idea of how two hundred years ago the Republic is still not everywhere when the old stuff had them around for thousands of years.)
Getting my second COVID jab t' morrow. Hopefully there will be no turning into a lizard person, or whatever it is they're supposed to do, but if that happens, at least it's the right weather for it.
Oh, and Loki's coming out on Disney+ as well. Yay!
Quite partial to Chinese, though most of the local ones are baffling in their approach to "speedy" delivery. Or a nice soggy bag of chips.

Date: 2021-06-08 12:09 pm (UTC)This is a very loaded question and I don’t want to offend anyone, but if I may ask: what exactly is there to be proud about with being LGBT? I don’t mean that as in “you should be ashamed of being LGBT”, I mean more that isn’t being LGBT just an intrinsic part of who you are, like which hand you write with? What’s there to necessarily be proud of? Or is that moreso pride in the cultural/patriotic sense?

Date: 2021-06-08 12:30 pm (UTC)I don't want to be seen as siding with ransomware assholes but I seem to remember one of the selling points behind Bitcoin was its security and as a result it was embraced by some rather unsavory types. Now apparently the FBI can come in an empty out your account anyway.
And there's still the underlying issue. Money only has value because governments say it has value. Crypto only has value because people on the internet say it has value. People on the internet can't agree on the color of a dress.
Favorite take-out is pizza but I try to not eat a lot of it because my metabolism turned on me in my early 20s.

But my real favorite are the gyudon from japanese chain Yoshinoya. To quote Kinnikuman, it's fast, good and cheap. Why are there only sushi and yakitori restaurants in my country? What is wrong with a good bowl of rice with slices of meat?
I just watched "Evangelion in 5 minutes" (it's more like 10, actually) by the team that brought us "DBZ in 5 minutes". It's priceless.

Date: 2021-06-08 01:00 pm (UTC)After several weeks of overwork and overtime at my current job my contract is finally ending and I'm looking forward to taking a few days to finally getting back into my reading and maybe a bit of writing. On the docket at the moment are:
Anne Lecke's Ancillary Justice, which I got about a hundred pages into before getting busy, and which just isn't clicking for me so far.
Abraham Riesman's Stan Lee biography
Ravage 2099 (there might be a short essay or at least some interesting thoughts there)
Age of the Sentry
The rest of 1996 for my Spawn podcast.
Favourite takeaway is probably standard Chinese food. Not terribly exciting, but there's usually quite a few options to buy from and they're often quite different even in how they prepare the same dishes, so it's just to try.

Date: 2021-06-08 01:21 pm (UTC)I've always liked Star Wars, but could never get into the various tie-ins except the Mandalorian. I watched the premiere episode and the one that followed that and haven't gone back. The members of the Bad Batch all seem very thinly sketched. One thing that really hurts the show is that the tech nerd clone and the cyborg have an overlapping niche while the cyborg doesn't have a very distinctive personality. With a core cast this size, every character should bring something to the table, even if it's a broadly-sketched archetype to be fleshed out later.
I understand that it's a kids' show, so it's unreasonable to expect an intense character driven narrative by episode 2. I still find it surprising that the people who have made Star Wars TV series since the '00s came up with an interesting design for a main character and put no further effort into the character. I'm sure they have some great seasons-spanning arc planned out for the cyborg clone (or he is earmarked to die tragically), but I should think a show like this lives or dies by how engaging the group dynamic is and if the group dynamic doesn't sing right out of the gate, my investment in Star Wars media isn't going to be enough to keep me around.

Date: 2021-06-08 05:29 pm (UTC)In happier news, I was pleasantly surprised by Miitopa. Yeah yeah, I'm behind all the cool kids who have already shown off their avatars. The game is delightfully quirky, able to make me laugh and "dawww" at times, and of course the big draw is having all your favorite characters from absolutely anything be in the story and/or on your team. I'm nowhere near creative enough to make my own avatar, so I am incredibly impressed with all the ones you can get from other people - the details and dedication are amazing. To wit - I have Kermit the Frog as the Great Sage, Obi-Wan Kenobi as the King, and Jessie/James (pokemon) as a LoveyDovey couple. It's a hoot.
Favorite take-out is a tough choice - it's an amusing headache in my family as whenever we decide to do so, we spend a half hour going "I don't care, what do you guys want?" Over and over and over. Though now that I am thinking about it, I could really go for some Chinese now - pork fried rice, shrimp egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken, beef lo mein... /insert homer simpson drool noise

Date: 2021-06-08 08:19 pm (UTC)However, before I make my decision, I'd like to check a few things.
1)Does Ciel die or otherwise get screwed over in the end? I have a extremely low tolerance for child death in my entertainment, and similarly low tolerance for depressing endings. I know the very premise of the show is that he sold his soul and so presumably is bound to hell, but I'm hoping he manages to pull some kind of Constantine-like maneuver to get out of the deal.
2)Does the anime actually offer any kind of real ending at all, or is it open-ended and I'd have to read the manga to get a conclusion?
3)I heard that one storyline is about a serial killer who targets women who had an abortion. I need to know if the serial killer's motive is painted as deranged or if the writing pretends that they have a point. It would be an utter and complete dealbreaker for me if the author tries to shove anti-choice rhetoric down my throat (main reason I refused to read Fables).
