So Spencer killed the version of Need they brought back in the Clone Conspiracy so he could resurrect him the same way they did Norman in the 90s Clone Saga? Throw in some Brand New Day Harry nonsense and you've got a Goblin Hat trick.

Not really sure why they'd bring him back in the first place. He isn't that interesting. Take the Hobgoblin stuff away and he just exists to be a love interest to Betty* and a romantic rival to Peter** and Flash***.

*Who is already neglected by most writers.
**Remember when it was implied that Pete slept with a married woman? Classy.
***Has he been used at all since he got brought back to life?

I mean Ned was a wife beating douchecanoe and Betty slept with Peter because she was desperate to actually feel some joy again.

My real issue here is the way this pretends Ned was only a piece of shit because of the Hobgoblin

No

No Ned was just a piece of shit

The Hobgoblin made him a psychopath sure but he was a shitbag before that

I was surprised to see this little detail about Peter's sexual history (I mean, I've read a lot of Spider-Man, but not everything), so I looked up the history of Betty's post-marital romance with Peter... and hoo boy, it is a journey.

There is a lot to unpack here

Apart from MJ and Black Cat pretty much every one of Peter's romances could be summed up as "Mistakes were made"

I mean with Black Cat and Silk it was mostly a sex thing anyway.

MJ is really Peter's only stable relationship...when editorial wasn't trying to break them up.

I do think Peter and Betty love each other but things keep getting in the way. Her life is crazier than most superhero protagonists let alone supporting characters (something she has in common with JJJ). Considering being in the orbit of people like Spider-Man, Hobgoblin, and Venom once drove her to joining a cult, it's probably for the best that she and Peter are just friendly exs these days; otherwise she'd probably have ended up like most of Daredevil's exs.

Rose-colored retcons aside, Gwen was a terrible match.

Peter Parker RUINED Deb Whitman's life.

Having a relationship that is "Mostly a sex thing" with a woman that looks like Felicia Hardy sounds like a beautiful relationship to me

And yeah joining a cult is bad enough in real life but its even worse in the Marvel universe. In real life most of the time the worst that'll happen is you get your life savings stolen from you by a conman ranting about "Thetans" and "Xenu". In the Marvel universe there's every chance you'll get involved in a whole heap of supervillain bullshit like Betty did

Gwen honestly was kind of terrible in a lot of ways? I mean she was a teenager and as a certain fuck-mothering vampire said while giving therapy to the souls of the dead, no one isn't kind of an asshole when they're a teenager. But it is very funny to me how some writers are fixated on Gwen as being this perfect pure soul who could do no wrong when even before the horrible "Sins Past" retcon she had no shortage of flaws and bad decisions to her name

Deborah Whitman was much better off in the animated series at least. Though she probably still has flashbacks to Morbius and his dreadful need for PLASMA and his horrible octopus hands

He'll come back with two handguns (engraved "power," and "responsibility," natch), and hunt down carjackers and stick-up men while claiming disappointment that Peter doesn't take superheroing more grimseriously. Then he'll get a spin-off book with a sexy alien and sour-faced archer.

He did indeed.
Technically, Martha Wayne hasn't (besides a one-page thing in Dark Knights: Metal that never came up again).
Letting the side down there, she is.

Speaking of the "no-one stays dead" rule, next year, Jason will have been back from the dead the same amount of time he was dead. Seventeen years.
Kind of eerie.

His original death might have been poorly handled, but I think the idea of Ned Leeds as a normal, albeit not great, guy who was chewed up and destroyed by supervillain bullshit has touch of poignancy in pointing toward the human cost of these things, and it enriched Betty Brant's character. Alive he's just kind of boring.

Also I'll never understand the editorial line that Peter can't have kids because "it ages him" but its perfectly fine for supporting characters who are roughly the same age like Harry and Betty to have them.

(Yeah, I know Betty's age tends to be inconsistent in relation to Peter's but even if she's older she isn't MUCH older.)

Right, no one wants to break the cash cow. I get that the person writing Defenders usually has more creative freedom than the person writing Avengers.

Still, the objections to letting Peter have a family are always framed as it "aging" him even though Liz and Harry (who are both Peter's age) have a son who is *incoherent-mumbling* years old. Therefore I think it's reasonable to say Peter could have a kid Normie's age.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, it was really gross watching Silk (who is also Peter's age) flirt with Amadeus Cho. I really don't want Peter heading over to Champions HQ to pick up chicks.

In a storyline called The Chameleon Conspiracy, involving a guy who once brought the Parker parents back from the dead through the use of robots, a guy who has faked his own death repeatedly...

let's just say that this "resurrection" of Ned Leeds has all my comic-reading bullshit buttons pushed. It's too convenience, it's too "yeah sure, comics logic" and it's just plausible enough for Peter to fall for it. I mean this is seriously a "how could Ned come back? Osborn drugs, sure," story.

I mean, right down to the part where he's been living undercover in Europe for YEARS...

If it really IS him, and this really IS how he returns from the dead, I'm going to cry bullshit on account of it being lazy, derivative, and repetitive.

But I'm still rolling to disbelieve.

There are too many variables that really make me doubt this is truly Ned.

#1 Ned knew 0 of the locations of Norman's hideouts, Kingsley did, and destroyed the last journal (which held nothing of value to him back in Amazing #261). So there is no way he could have the intel he did.

More to that, this disregards what Kingsley/Fisk's interactions with Ned prior. Ned revealed the identity of the Rose to Wilson for the information on Charlemagne. There's been 0 evidence to suggest these new revelations ever.

Further, if "Ned" truly was wanting to hunt for the formula it's not the Flash moment that should have been his motivation. It should have been when the Punisher shot at him back during the Gang War.

#2 Norman was in Europe at this time (per the Clone Saga retcon). If this truly was one of his places and he had a formula lying around then Jason Macendale is weeping hard in hell over the fact he didn't think of this first.

I get the feeling this place wasn't abandoned but used. And would Norman really make the same mistake twice? A mistake we know during the retcon and later Goblins at the Gate showed how TICKED he was for Hobgoblins stealing his stuff?

#3 So Ned ingested the Stromm formula (aka the Goblin serum). See, there's this big side effect called MADNESS. You don't go being crazy and ingest something that makes you suddenly sane. It only makes you worse. Phil Urich couldn't even escape that fate dosed with the modified formula Harry had made. Taking the Goblin serum means a legacy of madness.

The only person to not be "mad" from taking it was Roderick Kingsley. Even then, he bathed himself in the formula too long that could have caused madness.

So how come Ned is acting as a fine sane fella? This makes 0 sense. The worse part is Peter KNOWS this. Heck, he even ponders that in the next page after all this.

#4 We saw the rotting corpse of Ned at Kindred's table (and the corpse was accounted for by Carlie Cooper before she found the additional body and was taken off the board).

HOWEVER, given who also just came back to the living in the prior arc and given their connection with Ned makes me wonder.

My guess is Chamleon screwing with Betty/Pete, but the why has me baffled.

We have the freaking Foreigner (aka the dude who killed Ned) who has a posse of Jack O'Lanterns (aka the identity of the dude who put the hit out on Ned) in this issue, and a resurrected Richard Fisk running around to boot.

There's just WAAAAAAAAAAAY too many red flags here to suggest a robot duplicates again. More so when Chameleon references the darn things the prior issue.

That's a pretty low bar. Norman's entire career as both a businessman and a supervillian has been stealing the work and ideas of others and claiming them as his own.

Well, really that puts him on par with most real world businessmen but he still sucks.

There had always been fan theories that one of Kingsley's parents could have mentally ill, it being a slight against the family name (with something dark being done to the poor being), and his great phobia of being mad himself.

Regardless, there is no madness behind the method of the Hobgoblin!
