I remember the 90s as a colourful era with casual, non-judging feminist and LGBT themes in the comics, but a) 99% of what I've read from the decade comes from Japan and b) I may be seeing the past with rose-tinted glasses.

I want to say the quote was a reference to the 90's as a "real world" decade, not it's very iconic comics image. (Say what you will about the 90's, it certainly deserves to be defined as more than just a transition between. Except, I think 98-01 was kind of this rudderless, back to basics holding pattern for a lot of mainstream stuff) But the "heroes reborn" comment...

Okay, so Vampirella is attempting to live a normal life as a down-on-her-luck cosplay model (and yeah, that was probably an even tougher gig to monetize in the nineties) *of* Vampirella, who is widely regarded as a fictional character?

You know, I don't really follow Vampirella closely, but she seems to have a wildly different status quo every time someone posts scans here.
