After Mark Russell's Red Sonja ran came to an end, there has been a few other series launching. I've skipped Palmiotti and Conner's Invincible Red Sonja because I'm yet to read a Palmiotti book that I've enjoyed. I didn't care enough about Project Superpowers to read more than the first issue of The Super Powers. The main Red Sonja title is moderately interesting.

However, the series that I've been the most interested in reading monthly is Sonjaversal It's by Christopher Hastings, who you probably remember from The Unbelievable Gwenpool and The Six Million Dollar Man. That's how you know it's going to be good.

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT COMIC BOOK TO EVER COME OUT IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. Starring: RED Sonja, BLUE Sonja, GREEN Sonja, ORANGE Sonja, SAINT Sonja, HELL Sonja, and MANY, MANY, MANY MORE!

An evil god punishes Sonja’s across dimensions. What’s the punishment? SONJA’S MUST KILL OTHER SONJA’S. The battle for SONJA SUPREMACY BEGINS IN THE EVENT OF 2021, by CHRISTOPHER HASTINGS (Gwenpool) and PASQUALE QUALANO (DIE!NAMITE)!


From Sonjaversal 1

Before we continue, it is worth having a short reminder about Sonja’s main rule for life and where it comes from.

The goddess Scathach offered to make Sonja her chosen champion and a fighter without equal, on the condition that she would never lay with a man unless he defeated her in fair combat. Sonja gladly accepted the offer and became known as Red Sonja, the She-Devil of Hyrkania.

Summary:

Sonja gets to be a fighter without equal
Sonja has to be defeated by a man in fair combat before she can have sex with him.

She runs into a guy while she attends the funeral of a friend


If you have a beard like that, you deserve to get your ass kicked


Red Sonja leaves the funeral and runs into Orange Sonja, with her glowing eyes. They fight, and the issue is literally left on a cliffhanger.

Orange Sonja is a cyborg, sent on a mission to killed Red Sonja, like many other Sonjas before her.
Sonjas such as these



Blue Sonja, Cowgirl Sonja, Red Sonja, White Sonja, Lacrosse Sonja and Steampunk Sonja are all taken, along with Purple Sonja and her giant mech through the portal to hell. Orange Sonja does not get to join them, as Red Sonja decapitated her with a shiny laser sword

Sonjaversal 3
Hell Sonja explains that the Sonjas are all holy champions of gods, blessed with their powers and an oath to their god. They have been gathered to Hell because one Sonja broke her oath and refuses to face her chastening. The Sonjas will only be released when Oathbreaker Sonja is dead. Hell Sonja and Saint Sonja have struck a deal where the Sonja who kills Oathbreaker Sonja is released from her oath and gets to enjoy the gifts of her patron with none of the costs.




Lacrosse Sonja tries to hide in a dark corner of Hell, but Hell Sonja persuades her to awatch the events with her and Saint Sonja.



The Sonjas continue fighting, but some alliances are (almost) made



Yellow Sonja has an oath and a patron, different to Red Sonja’s


FORESHADOWING! Lacrosse Sonja WILL kill somebody before this series ends

Red Sonja meets Yellow Sonja, Silver Sonja and Blue Sonja and they make a move to...

Yes...the Sonjas are going to space!

Sonjaversal 4
Hell Sonja sets the team on the path to find Saint Sonja, who is not telling her something. Their task is now to kill Saint Sonja and take her power, freeind the Sonjas from the hunt for Red Sonja. Some Sonjas have already decided that Red Sonja cannot be that important, so the contest must be about killing as many Sonjas as they can.

Sonjaversal 5
Silver Sonja returns to hell to collect the surviving Sonjas (including Green/Purple/Orange Sonja who have combined to form a giant dinosaur mech) and Red Sonja puts on a space suit and battles Planet Sonja and then Saint Sonja








The issue ends with the Sonjas being free to return to their homes, with their gifts and without their obligations to their patron goddess (because Red Sonja killed it)

There are so many world.

They are all so different

They are so much the same


The series continues at the end of July, following the adventures of...Noir Sonja!

Ideally, we'd get some one-off adventures of the different Sonjas, but we'll have to see how it goes.

Do they get stronger with each kill like in that Jet Li movie; the One?

Hell Sonja leaves her to fend for herself, kind of a dick move tbh
But then she gets a laser gun from Purple Sonja
And not much else but she goes back to her own world at the end like everyone else I guess?

TBH I think there could have done with a bit more Lacrosse Sonja than what we got

Sometimes I think that a small amount of characters is just enough.

And one of those was Lacrosse Sonja, whose last appearance feels vague, brief and disconnected from anything

I was really disappointed in this series as I felt like the characters were Sonjas in name only and didn’t seem like multiversal Red Sonjas. On the other hand, I really enjoyed Sonja Project SuperPowers. And Sonja:1984 (it was trite but fun). I do really like seeing Hyborian characters interact with the present day (Savage Avengers is my favorite ongoing right now - Duggan is killing it!)
