Steve: "I guess anyone can be Captain America after all..." Sam: "Does that mean..." Steve: "No, Sam."
Seriously though, if this series doesn't lead to Sam taking up the mantle again, I'll be completely confused. You have two Spider-Man. Two Wolverine. Two Nova. Sam is holding the mantle in the MCU. Comics, what are you doing?
A character with his own distinct identity should replace it with an identity derived from a character he's an equal partner with, to create a simplistic synergy.
it's not that simple. Having a high profile character like sam, who is black, take on the mantle of a typically white character is something a LOT of people are taking heart in....
that said... what would be great, is if this continued on. Have someone else be Captain America, maybe Eli, Instead of Patriot should "Graduate" to Captain america.
I kinda like the idea of a Captain America Corps, but NOT a Corps because that would be anthemia to the Captain America ideal. He isn't a person, he's an ideal. he can literally be anyone who upholds the principles he stands for.
I'm not American, so I'll try not to completely step out of line here, but the... Spider-Versing of Captain America feels deeply weird to me. Both for the fact that it is shamelessly an attempt at Spider-Versing him as a part of the turn towards superheroes as brands rather than characters (even moreso than they've always been) and the rhetorical implications of doing that with a character who is both the embodiment of "The American Dream" and the idealized view of American spirit is... strange.
I think it's entirely in keeping with the current national mood that having a singular representation of the American Dream might be seen as unrealistic, and maybe never should have been the goal. Not sure that's what the comic itself is going for, though.
I think that's it; through adoption of the Captain America identity we seen a bunch of people who would have historically been denied a place as "true" Americans getting to represent the truest and best America.
I guess it's all well and good, if not something that I (as a non-American and a tedious leftist) necessarily connect with, but seeing this explored in a Disney comic that's also seeding potentially lucrative IP just makes me look askance at it.
I guess, you never read Civil War comic aside from awful reputation along with demonizing accountability. The part where Captain American say "No You Move" and fight against tyrranical government and Registration. Not sure about movie, but he was framed and not sure if that Registration Act would have space jail or arresting people without trial (seeing that T'Challa's dad is a stand-up and decent guy, I think he would find them idiotic). Also my peeve with him being caricatured as jingoistic moron based on surface assumption and Ultimate version without understanding multiverse.
I like the idea. With someone as big and influential as Captain America, that makes sense there’d be copycats (or copycaps in this case) looking to spread his sort of ideals in his name.
It's about as I feared. A nice idea but Cantwell fumbles the ball when it comes to voice, pacing, and execution. I don't get what people see in him, when all of his characters feel off-model to me. If I wasn't so interested in the regional Caps...
Or is this how badly Steve Rogers is being written in general these days? Because he comes across like the moronic asshole version from the Ultimate comics there
In the pages that weren't posted here, which came before this sequence, Steve was minding his own business in his home when an unknown superhuman burst in, decked him, and made off with his shield. When he and Sam tracked the guy down, the thief used the shield to nearly cause a massive train crash.
So Steve's initially on edge in this sequence, and has reason to be such.
Isn't that the one with Fillipina character whose name is Tagalog for "private parts" if abbreviated from Arielle (so I guess Phillipines might have memes for Little Mermaid and Ariana Grande)? The author tweeted that she had Tagalog speaking friends...not sure if they are mean kids (beleive me, it is an actual name and I talked with a Fillipino friend who said that it would have been popularized due to Little Mermaid and mean kids will get creative with it ALOT). https://twitter.com/notallie_/status/1401077535102758913
