Mod Post : Off-Topic Tuesday
Jul. 6th, 2021 11:36 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
Somwhat ON topic, Richard Donner has passed away at 91, The director of movies like The Omen, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon and, of course, Superman, it's safe to say he shaped a LOT of our childhoods, and the perceptions of action, horror and superhero movies in particular over the past forty years.
The US has pulled completely out of Afghanistan after nearly twenty years.
In the UK, the Prime Minister announced that England is, essentially, going back to a pre-pandemic state (in terms of masks no longer being required, but recommended in certain situations, social distancing being removed) as of 19th July. This has been, as you might imagine, greeting with mixed reactions. Even those who are endorsing the move agree it's a gamble. Infections are still on the increase, though serious cases of covid and death are much, much lower than they were thank to vaccinations.
Iceland's experiment with a four day working week has apparently proved very successful
Netflix Transformers: War for Cybertron - Kingdom has a new trailer, and a release date of 28th July
Random question of the week - Favourite current music?

Date: 2021-07-06 11:18 am (UTC)A serial killer was caught in my hometown. He killed three teenagers, and another teen girl committed suicide after being assaulted by him. The young man was known to the law, yet almost nothing was done – and instead the police kept suspecting local Romanis, I feel like smashing the fingers of whoever gave that order with a bat. It’s an extremely triggering topic. If you want to talk to me about me, use pms please.
Poland continues to work hard to catch up with Russia, Belarus and Georgia as the worst place to live in Europe (even with transition and open queerness being still legal, we had long surpassed Hungary). There’s a string of arrests of human rights activists under bogus charges, but since the judical arm now belongs to the governing party, nothing stops them from putting their enemies in jails. And despite all this, PIS consistently has over 50% popular support. Why, people, why? Is schadenfreude your national fetish, to the point you’ll sacrifice your own freedom and happiness to see someone you dislike suffer even more than you?
I opened a birthday charity event on Facebook and the platform banned my account IMMEDIATELY. Like, in literal SECONDS. And I just really wanted to quest for some money for the charity I am involved in! I feel so hopeless. My banking account is almost empty, I want to help people and animals, but I am not sure if I’ll be able to help myself! I wanted to visit a palm house for my birthday, but now even that is debatable.
Like, I’m trying to be realistic. I am not being actively persecuted and I am not in danger for living here, and at the same time I have easy access to drugs and other medical services I am in a need for. Meanwhile, if I left, I’d be the object of persecution in whatever country I find myself in, as a foreigner, and with my disabilities finding a job would be nearly impossible – I only have my job because somebody took pity on me. And I’m scared what would happen to my parents, my cats, my wild animal friends, my garden and my mother’s precious musical instruments if I left, and I cannot take them with me. (It’s the joke about Jews and pianos, only it was never funny.) I honestly don’t know what to do.
Some asshole put pins in the wheels of my father’s car. They must have done so when my father was at work, at home the car is in a locked garage. Dunno if it’s related to me.
(I am also a tiny bit salty that a post with one sentence clickbait lead got infinitely more attention than posts where I introduced some of my favorite recent comics :/ )

Date: 2021-07-06 11:36 am (UTC)I have been enjoying some Archie comics as well. Especially the rebooted Josie and the Pussycats and Jughead. The rebooted Archie is good as well, but a bit too serious.
One of my favourite parts of the rebooted Josie and the Pussycats is when Melody says they can't fight crime because nobody's mother is called Martha. An easy shot, but it amused me.
As for Jughead, I really liked the second arc guest-starring Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I had such a crush on Sabrina back in the day, so I look forward to getting around to reading her rebooted series.

Date: 2021-07-07 12:35 am (UTC)(Never actually got around to reading the newer Josie and the Pussycats. I should probably fix that).
I actually think DC might even be worse about this but it seems like Marvel has alternate pasts in addition to the much more sensible alternate futures. I mean, I just recently saw some scans here that implied Sherlock Holmes (a) was a real person and (b) was Mystique even though I was always under the impression he was fictional in 616. I've lost track of the number of immortals and time travelers that have claimed to be the same handful of historical figures; either they're taking turns, someone is lying, or the timeline isn't set in stone.
How did Conan get to the present anyway? I know he's an Avenger now but my assumption would be that he finds the nearest wizard and threaten them at sword point until Strange or Doom or whoever sends him back.

Date: 2021-07-06 12:25 pm (UTC)Man, I've remembered how much I like Hera from Star Wars Rebels. Maybe I should get that game she was in. I'll buy it second hand, turn the difficulty down, breeze through the short campaign, then return the game. I might do that.
Saw a pretty entertaining episode of the latest Scooby Doo show. The Flash was the guest star, and it had a pretty fun plot. Barry Allen just wanted to hang out with his buddies Scooby and Shaggy, so he uses his superspeed to keep on foiling Old Man Jenkins haunted light house scheme, so they won't have to get chased around the old haunted barn/lighthouse/mansion/etc.
I may have wasted $30 dollars buying something on Ebay. I view it as supporting independent businesses, that fill a valuable niche that The Man has foolishly chosen to ignore. So really, it's morally okay.
Wiki or Fandom, (I don't know) has added an even worse layout. I can only assume they have been brought out, and this is to make users leave in mass.
Hooray. The final Purge film is out. We're finally free! From what I can tell about this franchise trajectory the eighth film could have been pretty good.
The first season of Better Call Saul, ended on a weird note. And then the second season back peddled on it entirely. I expected better of you Vince Gilligan.

Date: 2021-07-07 12:48 am (UTC)Now I'm curious about your ebay purchase.
Better Call Saul has been one of my favorite shows in recent years and the wait for Netflix to add season five (which aired over a year ago) is killing me.

Date: 2021-07-06 12:49 pm (UTC)So the character who in the comics has oftentimes been a villain turns out to be... *gasp* bad! Shocking, innit?
And Richard E. Grant shows up playing exactly who we were expecting him to show up as.
Not in the way I thought he would, but still.
oh and look at that twist with the timekeepers how utterly unexpected.
... okay, actually, I was expecting the reveal they didn't exist at all, so... well played, writers?
If the Lego sets are any indication, Shang-Chi will have Shang-Chi fighting a dragon.
I was ambivalent about this movie before, but if there is even the slightest chance of human-fighting-dragon action, I'm in!
('s all I wanted from Iron Fist. And we never got even a glimpse of it.)
Apparently Bioware / EA will not be revealing anything about the next Mass Effect at that upcoming news thing.
All that was missing from this announcement was a "nyeh-nyeh".
Look, it's been seven months. Surely they could throw *A* breadcrumb, maybe? Even if all they've got at the moment is a room full of writers' notes scribbled down on post-its after a night of binging Chinese takeaway.
Think I've spent most of the last month spending my weekends looking after a senile dog.
Not remotely fun.
The not eating, inability to handle going down stairs, occasional fits of paranoid violence aimed at humans who look like they might be thinking about coming near her, loss of bladder control, and incessant wandering about from arthritic pain are... well, they are what they are.
It's just having to deal with that at three in the morning. And four in the morning... and five in the morning...
(On the plus side, finally figured out how to get to sleep on the sofa. Only took seven years!)

I've been watching Loki, but was quite bored with his pity party until episode #4. Now I can't wait to see where this story is going.
Watching the S6 of Agents of SHIELD. I'm still surprised at how much this show managed to hook me despite his terrible beginning.
Spring anime are ending.
I greatly enjoyed Shadows House, Vivy Fluorite Song and To Your Eternity.
Joran has been a bit of a disappointment despite good art: too much forced drama.
Combattants will be dispatched has been a fun ride. Quite a cheap anime, but there isn't an episode that didn't made me laugh.
France's number one promoter of HCQ, Professor Didier "I have an IQ of 180" Raoult is getting more and more opposed to vaccination. Probably out of spite and political calcul, since antiwaxers are the only ones who still believe he's the Savior.

Date: 2021-07-06 04:24 pm (UTC)I'm signed up for a playtest of the new Avatar the Last Airbender TTRPG this Friday. All I know so far is it's gonna be a Korra era game and the NDA spells out what I can and can't say in a way that I really appreciate. I'll probably have appropriate comments afterwards.
Watched the first Fear Street movie this weekend. I liked it. I haven't read the Fear Street books but my sister did and I've read quite a bit of the back of the book summaries and the wikipedia and tvtropes pages and it seems like it borrows most from the Cheerleaders trilogy. Looking forward to the next two.
The song I've been listening to the most right now is First in Flight by Don McCloskey which they played at the end of the second season finale of Mythic Quest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ItphmcYXpg)
Probably my favorite cover of a song of all time: Rick Astley joins a massive volunteer choir to sing Never Gonna Give You Up. Trust me, it's something to be experienced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJRsWJqDjFE
Also this accoustic instrumental cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foJ-Fs6DWZM) which goes really well when played over recordings of rain sounds
I don't have the highest opinion of Jimmy Fallon (or indeed, much of one at all) but I love his song Idiot Boyfriend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEHp0LndF5I
Speaking of instrumentals, Ocean by the John Butler Trio is wonderful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdYJf_ybyVo
A nice acapella mashup of Bittersweet Symphony with Ridin' Solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bF0ZZfbGaU
The Last Good Day of the Year by Coustaeu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66W0D7HMD0E
Left Me in a Hole by the Yonder Mountain String Band is another one I just discovered and have been playing over and over again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI3y1V8atTU
I could probably think of a bunch more right now if I didn't cap myself.

Date: 2021-07-07 01:26 am (UTC)I’m not a huge music person. I mostly listen to podcasts and audiobooks. I think the last time I got really excited about discovering a musician (Norah Jones) Borders still existed.
Haven’t watched a ton of TV (beyond random YouTube videos) in June.
Started watching the season of Black Lightning that Netflix just added but only made it a couple episodes before I kind of lost interest. The CW DC shows have their moments and that used to be enough to grab me but I’m more and more convinced that Legends is the only one that’s actually good.
I’ve been trying to watch Amphibia for a few weeks but I still haven’t cracked the first season despite enjoying it…though not as much as Star Vs or Owl House. It probably doesn’t help that it’s a show I absolutely can’t watch when I’m eating.
And of course, I’ve been watching Loki.
I did recently manage to watch a couple movies I’ve been meaning to watch for a while.
The most recent Lupin the 3rd movie was pretty solid. I was a bit worried that it would lean on the CGI gimmick too much but really it’s a perfectly fine (if a little formulaic) Lupin story.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow wasn’t bad but it was disappointing. I’ve always thought the “rookie Superman” era is something with a lot of storytelling potential (and apparently DC agrees because they give him a new origin mini every few years) but this seemed like a lot of wasted potential. Also I HATE this take on Lois.
Wish Dragon simultaneously manages to be an Aladdin knockoff and more than just an Aladdin knockoff.
I feel like the Harley Quinn movie suffers from the Constantine problem where I’d have enjoyed it more if they had changed the names. I wasn’t too bothered by Harley herself but most of the rest of the cast was unrecognizable.

Date: 2021-07-07 03:04 am (UTC)I agree that most of the shows are uneven and I have had to take breaks (Arrow S2-argh!). Legends is the one that has generally gotten much better over time (but this season has been iffy at best). David Ramsey directed one hell of an episode last week though!!!

Date: 2021-07-07 04:30 am (UTC)So, I'm enough of a misanthrope to expect strangers and even acquaintances to have zero regard for your safety re: covid. But a family member hits differently, especially when his niece is very high risk. The only downside of not losing anyone in the immediate family to covid is that it's reinforced the belief among some that it's no big deal.

Date: 2021-07-09 09:37 am (UTC)Welcome To The Internet is hilarious and "That Funny Feeling" perfectly sums up the experience of how the world makes me feel with my depression
Hayley Kiyoko is amazing and and I love Lady Gaga I think she's one of the most amazing performers of the 21st century. I also love Ke$ha and think the hate she gets is ridiculous.
Big fan of My Chemical Romance, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones and Elton John
Jack off Jill for sure
Jonathan Coulton is great in how he can make a song funny and sad all at once
