I will admit that I haven't steadily read batman comics in a long time. However, from scans that I have seen here and there as well as the occasional flipping through a book in a book store......it feels like batman is always getting his butt kicked by some new(or old) villain in a fist fight.
But hey, maybe I've just missed the times where he did otherwise.
You are missing them. This guy didn’t kick Batman’s ass, it was evenly matched with Batman giving the guy a solid uppercut at the end before blowing up the building and escaping.
Yeah, it doesn't feel like they are positioning this guy as Batman's equal in anyway. In the first fight he had the element of first surprise, but the dude likes someone who is going to go down so hard next time he fights Batman.
I kind of love that this is going to be what triggers Unsanity Collective as it feels really fitting.
Won't comment on what is to come, but kind of surprised that Batman books are doing this. Although since it is private security instead of the actual police department probably makes it a lot easier.
Now now, he was just fearing for his life, and we don't have all the story anyway, and his victims or his victims' parents probably smoked pot or something.
Honestly, I'm not so sure. White Woman's Tears are weaponized all the time to hurt minorities and especially black people. But when a white woman calls out systemic abuse and racism in the police, instantly the media's well of sympathy goes dry.
From what I've seen, society and the media are dedicated to kiss cop ass above all else. They'll normally throw black people under the bus for white people, and weeping white women are the perfect bludgeoning tool for that, but when a white person is victimized by cops they'll still do mental gymnastics to justify it. At this point I think a cop could stomp a kitten to death on camera while laughing maniacally and the news would be like "feline viciously attacked officer's foot."
As an example of how conservatives will turn on white women like Iagos on bath salts the second they reject their role as tool to maintain the bigoted status quo, see how conservatives still foam at the mouth when they hear "Dixie Chicks."
It's cool to see modern Batman comics have him fight what's essentially the embodiment of violent, militarized policing (complete with the little American flag insignia with a thin grey line) and I am on record as thinking that we need more comics, like Year 1 and Year 100, where Batman beats up cops. But this is marred by a couple of things for me.
1) There's still the fact that this is about evil private security, trying to supplant the real, heroic GCPD. It sucked when it was the plot of Future State and it sucks now. I know this makes it easier for the writers to get away with talking about police brutality, but it's exhausting and annoying to see writers have to pretend like cops need to be corrupted or replaced in order to behave exactly the way they already do IRL.
2) While Peacekeeper 1 up there is being clearly written as a villain, putting him in a cool, armored costume and giving him a codename means that if he lasts past this storyline there's a 70% chance he gets reinvented as an antihero in the next decade or so. That's kind of a silly thing to get irked about, since it's quite literally not what's on the page, but I can't help thinking about it.
I get the bother with Peacekeeper 1's visual design, but to me it works because the guy himself never feels good. Becasue of that it feels like it is more mocking the visual than trying to glorify the guy inside the armor.
