Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Jul. 27th, 2021 10:21 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course
The Olympics are well underway, but that's about the extent of my awareness of it, so I will leave it to others to raise more specifics if they wish.
As an amusing aside, Laurence Fox (UK actor turned failed mayoral candidate turnedmedia soundbite generator sorry "political activist" for oh-so-viciously oppressed... checks notes, "straight, white, entitled, males" ) published a Venn diagram of where he saw the state of the country/world as... this says something rather worrying about his understanding of how Venn diagrams work, but did lead to some terrific replies!
Tumblr has announced the imminent arrival of Tumblr Post Plus, a paid account option, which has gone down as well as a fart in a spacesuit.
ComicCon@home happened and, among other things, there was a fun Doctor Who panel with Chris Chibnall, Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill and Kevin Bishop, as well as a new cast member dropping in. Details revealed were scant (of course) but they did mention that season 13 is going to be slightly different inasmuch as it's going to be an eight episode story (We already new the Covid situation had cut the episode count from ten to eight), rather than eight individual episodes. Should be interesting as we;ve not seen a single story that along since... I mean the Key to Time season and "Trial of a Time Lord" had an over-arcing story, but separate stories within it, so this is perhaps closest to "The War Games", or "The Dalek Master Plan"
LEGO's new MCU minifigure assortment has been announced and will be focussing on the TV series, so wandavision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki and the upcoming What it..? . I love the accessories that Loki and Sylvie com with! :) (Also disappointed Agatha, Tommy and Billy are NOT included in the mix)
Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans dropped on Netflix, a movie to cap off the "Tales of Arcadia" series that encompassed Trollhunters, 3-Below and Wizards, aired. I confess I hadn't kept up with Wizards because of the focus on Steve, a character I didn't really care about, but might go back and give it another go. An unexpected ending, though it does seem to be very much a risky one (I won't say more as that would count as spoilers, though there may be spoilers in the replies)
Also on Netflix, "Masters of the Universe: Revelation" aired, and "Lo!" (to the surprise of no one) there was wailing and grinding of teeth from fanboys across the net. Given my very low level of expectations (not being a huge original series He-Man fan, though I did quite like the 2002 reboot, and my general apathy towards Kevin Smith for a good few years) I actually really enjoyed Revelation, because, like IDW's Transformers, it uses as it's plot base a question that the original series was never going to address: "What happens AFTER the ultimate confrontation between the champion of good and the embodiment of evil?".
I also thought the character arc for Teela (Sarah Michelle Gellar in fine form) was both logical and interesting: She was supremely pissed off, and had damn good reasons to be. Oh, and some very nice moments with Adam, but some of which might count as spoilers so... (though again, probable spoilers in the comments)

A slightly higher bodycount than I felt was necessary, I wanted to see more of the impact of the final battle on the rest of Eternia to make it hit home, but for Lena Headey giving a wonderful performance as Evil-Lyn, and a frankly lovely scene between Evil-Lyn and Orko where they discuss his past and what his name REALLY is, I was impressed! (You made me care about Orko, Kevin Smth, do you ave ANY idea how difficult that is?).
And, loathe though I am to mention Netflix three times in one post, "Transformers: War for Cybertron: Kingdom" arrives on the 29th July!

All thoughts I have to keep to myself.....
I see two ways for the Obi-Wan show to go. 1). Obi-wan lives the life of a hermit and tries to obtain spiritual enlightenment. 2). Obi-wan has to leave Tatooine and go on a mission, and have a bunch of fight scenes and cheap fanservice.
I fear that it will be option two.
I guess Star Wars is about killing people in a hallway now, that and raising marketable orphans who have mysterious powers...Man The Bad Batch is disappointing.
Oh boy, one episode of The Mandalorian was obviously about setting up a Cara Dunne spinoff show, which really annoyed me. I had my suspicions but, it got really blatant near the end.....
The Ahsoka episode was less obviously a pilot, but the bit where she said "Thrawn" was annoying. The Ahsoka and Sabine spinoff show, that Rebels promised is starting to look kind of unlikely. I don't particularly want to see Ahsoka in live action. Her head tentacles were too short and that upset me.
Surprisingly Boba Fett's presence in season two of The Mandalorian has been a lot more unobtrusive than I was expecting. He's treated as a guy the main characters meet, and they don't fawn over him and tell you to buy his merchandise.
He also didn't do a whole lot in The Believer, which was actually a really good episode.
Something which bugs me about the show is how it's establishing that Yoda is part of a super special and rare species. I saw nothing to indicate that in the films proper. They could have just been a normal part of this setting. Sure, Yoda and Yaddle seemed like powerful Force wielders, but I assumed that was because they had spent their long lives studying, meditating and researching in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment. But I guess they all have magic powers. Man, that seems so much more boring.
Beaststar volume five has arrived. I'd almost forgotten how fucked up this series was.
So, I've started reading more of Invincible. It's got some interesting stuff, but a lot of it is ideas are contrived, underdeveloped and gimmicky. Ultimately I was right to stop reading it when I did.
Scooby Doo and Guess Who had an episode with the guy from Spy Kids 2, making it the greatest episode of all. Man hat show isn't very good. I think it's primarily because the new Scooby Doo Movies (it's main influence), aren't very good.
In Better Call Saul they established that a plot important thing, would happen in a years time. If eight episodes later they say it's been about two months, that means it should only take another forty episodes....so a short time jump then.

Date: 2021-07-27 11:11 am (UTC)I mean "marketable orphans" has been Star Wars primary brand since 1977.
Yoda was always meant to be part of an almost unknown and very, very rarely seen species. His species has never been identified by name, nor his homeworld mentioned, and that was a deliberate and absolute choice made and maintained by Lucas himself from the word go. I was frankly stunned to see Yaddle in The Phantom Menace, though she was notably absent by the time the Clone Wars started.
I do want to like The Bad Batch, and full marks to Dee Bradley Baker for managing to do all the voices, but I'm really losing interest in them as a team.

Date: 2021-07-27 11:17 am (UTC)The Dragon Prince SDCC@Home segment had no solid info on Season four despite being announced a year ago. I fear they might take too long and kill the momentum, despite being promised the full saga/seven seasons.

Date: 2021-07-27 11:19 am (UTC)Definitely because of Covid.
Nothing else.
Like, say, someone at the Beeb having something against it and wanting it cancelled.
Again.
But then, much as I love Thirteen, her run has been hit and miss.
(Especially when it comes to sticking the landing.)
And I don't think the reduced episode time is going to do the already neglected Yaz much good.
I think making the Marvel+ shows minifigs is slightly perverse.
Leaving it up to random chance whether one acquires the best possible Loki or not.
(the endless Jokers and Jay Garricks when all I wanted was One. Damn. Cheetah!)
... I would be willing to pay full price for an entire set if that's the cost of getting a Croki.
And not a small army of unwanted Buckies.
I have only one question about Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and that is if there are any Snake Men.
Since it looks an awful lot like the answer is no, this show serves no purpose to me.

Date: 2021-07-27 11:26 am (UTC)And I agree, I think she's been a terrific Doctor, but the endings of some of her stories have been particularly weak.
Lego blind bag squeezing is an art, and as long as you don't mind getting funny looks from some shoppers you can usually find the unique piece in each figure (Supermarkets are best as they genuinely don't care, and you might find a some else doing the same thing, in which case you offer to help, as they might be looking for a different figure. I was practially offered someone's first born for being able to identify a Huey, as opposed to Dewey or Louie a few waves ago)
In the case above, you reject anything where you can feel the shape of Jay's distinctive headgear, and keep your fingers prepped for Cheetah's tail.
And I can confirm there are no Snake Men in MOTU:R

Date: 2021-07-27 11:48 am (UTC)Diring Comixology's BOGOF sale on Marvel trades, I got some What If? Classic trades in preparation for the upcoming Disney+ show. It is amusing how many of the stories have come true. Jame Foster became Thor. Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four. Bucky was alive all along.
Of course, I am particularly interested in reading the issues where Conan is trapped in the modern day. Well, late Seventies/early Eighties.

Date: 2021-07-28 11:23 am (UTC)Was considering posting something personal but I think I'll just rant about corporations
Date: 2021-07-27 12:13 pm (UTC)So, while reading some of the IDW Ninja Turtles comics I discovered all the Ghostbusters comics (including the TMNT crossovers) have vanished from the Kindle and Comixology stores (though previously purchased content is available at the moment). Anyway, it’s neat to be reminded I don’t own a lot of the stuff I bought from the guy who just flew a giant penis into almost-space.
Speaking of evil corporations that own everything, I finally finished Amphibia season 2 on Disney +. Its good but it isn’t as enthusiastic a recommendation as Star Vs the Forces of Evil or the Owl House.
Also, Disney + dropped the first five episodes (and only those five) of Owl House season 2 … because I guess they’re Netflix now.

Date: 2021-07-27 12:46 pm (UTC)Raya and the Last Dragon — Man, Disney’s really been dropping the ball with their animated movies lately. There’s ideas there and when they work they work beautifully, but everything is so half-baked that ends up distracting from the good stuff. Could have really benefitted from being given room to properly breathe, maybe an extra 30 minutes or so, but nix the modern lingo everyone speaks in. Loved the titular characters, everyone else was alright if not a bit repetitive with their backstories, but screw Namaari in particular with a whip sword. I hope this gets featured in the next Kingdom Hearts.
Godzilla vs. Kong — If you’re looking for anything moving or deeper than the title, this probably won’t be the movie for you. Maybe that’s because I’m an Adam Wingard fan (minus that one movie), or maybe that’s because I’ve been waiting 16 years for this, but by gosh, that was AWESOME. The Kong bits of the movie are stronger than the Godzilla side of things (heyo!), but for what that’s worth that’s a load of fun and exhilarating on the big screen.
Wolfwalkers — I really liked this one, though I don’t trust my opinion on this one because of my obvious biases. Still, I think this should have won the Oscar over Soul, though that’s mostly because I wasn’t too impressed with Soul in the first place.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It — My first Conjuring movie. That was certainly a movie. Tense enough at times, but not really too scary. To anyone who’s seen them, are the others any good, might I ask?
Spiral: From the Book of Saw — Decent enough, if a little predictable (I think I called the villain within like a minute of them showing up). Chris Rock was pretty good for the most part. Lots of cop cliches, though I found the subversion of the whole wild card loose cannon cop routine kind of funny in hindsight. Some of the traps feel like cheating, but I guess that makes sense considering Pigsaw’s shtick.
Daisy Quokka: World’s Scariest Animal — Starts off a bit weak and that’s budget really works against that at times, but that’s a charming enough movie with a nice message and some surprisingly neat characters. Apparently this is the third movie in a cinematic universe? I should have guessed with the trading cards in the credits, but that holds up well on that’s own. The title is a bit misleading, she’s not looking to become the world’s scariest animal, she’s looking to compete in these Olympic games that are scary because of the extreme environments/danger they present.
Freaky — Pretty good! Vince Vaughn is surprisingly intimidating as a Jason Voorhees/Michael Myers-esque expy. That made me laugh enough and even feel tense over the characters, and I really liked how they explored the killer having to get creative with his new body while the final girl had to somehow keep on the downlow. I wish they kept the original title.
Space Jam: A New Legacy — Have you ever been let down by a movie you had no faith in to begin with? I went in expecting to laugh at how blatantly corporate they could make this commercial, I left miffed because there is some genuinely neat things in here that are only ever briefly touched upon (like Bugs’ playful but sad loneliness over being the last Toon around, or Bugs Bunny and LeBron James Kingdom Hearts-ing their way through the Warner Bros. multiverse, the enemy team, I could go on). I’m not going to pretend the first movie was a masterpiece or anything (heck, that’s debateable if that was even any good), but that knew what that wanted to do and did that fine within a reasonable time, this one goes on for too long and the final game is a complete curbstomp. Plus, Warner Bros. apparently forgot to credit at least one of their animators and once again none of the voice actors outside of the celebrities were credited in the advertising, so that’s pretty scummy.
The Forever Purge — Man, these movies just get more and more depressingly prophetic every year, don’t they? If you’re not a fan of these movies than this one’s probably not for you, but I personally had a pretty good time.

Or it could be Miracle Day aka the Torchwood story that even the Torchwood fans who kept watching after Countrycide didn't want to watch and was called "The single worst experience I had that involved me watching a live action piece of fiction" by Bruce Wayne

In lighter news, the friend I mentioned last time is now diving head-first into the world of isekai (manga/anime where a character dies and gets reincarnated into another world, typically a video game setting) and apparently never realized it was a whole genre before. I've bitten my tongue so as to not ask how long she's been under a rock. But it's been fun showing her to my favorite ones and the ones that are out-right ridiculous. So far my favorite reaction of hers was to "Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon" based on the title alone. To quote, "IT'S ACTUALLY CALLED THAT?!" Yes. Yes it is.
I'm considering ordering a custom-made plush for the first time. I saw someone on tumblr had made a raven Poe Spell plush (from Ducktales 2017) and might be selling it on Etsy. It's adorable and also tempting me to cosplay Magica De Spell from the same series.
