So no “Tagalog for private parts” yet? That and wondering how they market Ariana Grande or Ariel from Little Mermaid due to associations with such term.
"Ari" in Tagalog means property, a thing that is owned. It can be used euphemistically to refer to genitals, such as in "ari ng lalaki", a thing a man owns, colloquially understood to refer to male genitalia. In this sense, it is roughly analogous to "private." When you talk about someone's privates, or private parts, it's understood to refer to their genitals, but at the same time you can talk about private eyes or private property or privateers or whatever without remotely evoking the same association.
Well, from the Fillipinos, Ari is genitals, even in sex eds. That and one of them had experienced bullies who kinda find ways to make insults based on names.
I am Filipino. Nothing you have said contradicts me. The fact remains that the primary definition of "ari" is property, a possession, which is used very commonly in constructions like "may-ari", "ari-arian", and its secondary meaning as "genitals" derives from that.
Bullies can make insults based on your name regardless of what your name is. "Peter" is another term for penis, (also Willy, Dick, so on), no one raises these concerns about Peter Parker because you would have to be a real immature jerk to come up with that.
You are arguing from a position of ignorance. If you had simply googled "Ariel + Philippines", like you were wondering about in your initial post, you would see that it is a popular brand of detergent over here, the associations you are imagining simply do not exist.
There's a bit of a Denny O'Neil feel here. The O'Neil Feel?
From NYTimes.com O’Neil felt that fantasies of boundless power and righteous might needed to be grounded in social realism. The greatest obstacle to a hero is not a villain but the world itself: The villain is a symptom, but the problems are societal. The hero cannot save the world by throwing a punch. “We can use,” O’Neil once said, “a lot of words that seem innocuous — ‘We don’t do violence in comics, we do action’ — which is true, but we also do violence. And most of the problems are solved in one way or another by violence — ‘It’s clobberin’ time!’ — so I wanted to put into the continuity a voice for the other side.” He was a pacifist.
I like her, she seems pretty fair compared to most characters that are written into this role. Except for Isaiah Bradley comment, by the time Steve and Sam knew of him the damage was done.
I think the "Y'all" comment is meant in a more general sense rather than her blaming Sam and Steve specifically for what happened. Especially since Sam wasn't even born when it happened and like you say Steve didn't find out until after he was a Capsicle
Ugh, I'm so over the "I fight for the regular people on the streets and therefore I need to ignore and deligitimize those that are known to take on grander adventures".
This attitude has been done before, and it never came off any less than obnoxious.
You can thank Green Arrow and Green Lantern for that trend, at least popularity-wise. Also a group of black kids disliking Falcon ...for being a superhero. I get it when it's police or people of authority with potential to abuse power for sake of (mostly white) superiors, but odd to apply that to superheroes who had good standing (at least before awful events and questionable writing that kinda made them villainous, ala Marvel Civil War). Also, just that it didn't think of cosmic-scale terror that would make Warhammer 40k look like bar room brawl by comparison back then.

Date: 2021-07-29 04:34 pm (UTC)Steve is in his old Director of Shield outfit, with the photon shield.
Sam is back in his Captain America outfit, with a new shield.
Speed Demon is in classic Cap costume, with the OG shield?
And Sin is back, without her red skullified face again?
I do like the bit where the 'Cap' of this issue respects Steve and Sam, doesn't even blame them, but is firm in her beliefs as well.
Still not sure how I feel about turning Cap into 'We are Robin', but I guess if you were going to democratize any super hero...
