In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
The Olympics are over, and whilst I still raise a cynical eyebrow at the decision to go ahead with it at all, and some of the decisions of the commmittee, I do have to applaud the competitors and the sense of sportsmanship that came through.
Be it the Uzbekistan Rhythmic Gymnastics team doing a routine to the Sailor Moon theme (and in matching costumes), or runner Isaiah Jewett helping competitor Amos Nijel across the finish line in an 800m heat, or the Italian and Qatar high jumpers being so evenly matched that they asked if they could share the gold medal or Simone Biles having the extraordinary courage to put her own mental health needs first and withdraw from a competition in the global spotlight because she couldn't face it, only to return later in the Games and win a Bronze.
Bleaker news, alas, from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change about the state of the global environment and the impact of climate change. But you can read that for yourself if you feel up to it.
I'd completely forgotten that Titans Season 3 launches this week so... that's happening.
So is the launch of Marvel's "What If...?" series.
Miraculous Ladybug is tugging at the old heartstrings, as more new heroes are being summoned, including the striking (pun intended) Purple Tigress and as a result, a certain catboy is feeling more and more left out of things. :(

Date: 2021-08-10 10:29 am (UTC)Middle of the summer means unprecedented wildfires across the northern hemisphere. The loss of lives and property is greatest in Turkey and Greece (which lost its most important honey producing region), but the fires themselves take out the greatest surface in Russia, where fighting them is difficult due to remoteness of many affected areas. The situation is particularly dire in Yakutia, where the lives of minority ethnic groups depend on the existence of the vast taiga. On twitter #SaveYakutia tag is used to boost awareness.
The most controversial olympics in recent memory have just ended, and paralympics are to start in two weeks. Tokyo event will be remembered for banning swimming caps made for swimmers with African type of hair, for banning several Black female athletes with naturally high testosterone level, for banning Simone Biles from performing her signature moves and intense pressure forcing the athlete to temporarily drop out, for banning a Black artist and an Ainu group from performing during the opening ceremony, for a bizarre „controversy” concerning a South Korean archer winning all the gold medals while having short hair, which apparently is a national disgrace, for a Belarusian athlete having to escape to Poland after the government retaliated with persecution for the sportswoman refusing to take part in an event she has not trained for, and for Poland having a handful of medals won by openly lesbian athletes, including one married to a British woman. Another Polish athlete will marry her girlfriend upon returning – of course, not in Poland.
The national media ignored the queerness of the women, to the point of listing the married one under wrong surname. I’m pretty sure there’s a smear campaign in the making against the athlete who thanked her girlfriend on live tv. Katarzyna Zillmann is a hero who risked her life and sacrificed her boat to safe a drowning man, but there is no level of scumbaggery the national media won’t sunk to.
As expected, the olympics led to soar in covid cases in Japan and spread of the most dangerous variants of the virus across the world. On the bright side, female athletes are for me the most beautiful women in the world. I especially adored Jamaica’s running team, the are awesome athletes and gorgeous people. I feel so sorry for Danusia Francis, whose injury caused her to get lowest points in artistic gimnastics. Canada’s soccer team, which won gold during the event, included a nonbinary player, Quinn (no first name), making it an olympic first.
Speaking of national media, tomorrow the parliament of Poland will vote over the bill to nationalize all of tv. I have to say I am scared. If passed, the bill will hugely sour international relations of Poland, as most nongovernmental media in the country are owned by entities from the EU, UK or USA. International tvs like Al-Jazeera, BBC International or CNN will also be banned. If the bill passes, several corporations would have to leave Polish market on an almost day to day basis.
At the same time, there’s a bill banning pride parades and other queer positive public events as well as mixing pro-queer symbols with national or religious symbols. In theory, showing up with my Rainbow Star Of David flag could land me in prison for years if this law passes. Sex education is already banned, so is abortion in almost all cases, and the governing party is still hugely popular, so there’s a high chance both laws will pass.
Additionally, after the holidays catholic religion lessons and taking part in religious catholic celebrations will be compulsory for students on all levels, from nursery to last year of high school. You won’t be able to drop out citing differing religious believes either. I’m really worried.
There are also riots happening across the country against the police, as this summer there were two high profile deaths by police of mostly harmless mentally ill or narcoticized men. When your opponent holds a mushroom picking knife or a stone, you are a disgrace of a policeman if you are unable to disarm him without inflicting lasting damage.
Poland’s sole mainstream left wing newspaper published an extremely queerphobic article claiming that LGBT+ people are a cult “kidnapping” “psychologically unstable” and compassionate teenagers and young adults, and that there’s no need for legally-recognised civil unions or possibility of legal gender change. In the West, that would be too conservative even for conservative media, but Polish leftists have always been very queerphobic. None of the prominent gay politicians or celebrities commented on it, because the article was not attacking gay men specifically and different letters of LGBT do not show much solidarity with each other in Poland – especially since the same issue of the newspaper printed an article sympathetic to gay men. Disappointed but not surprised.
As a personal curiosity, apparently when you are making a soap and mix several floral and oriental fragrant oils (jasmine, hyacinth, lavender, lilac, lily of the valley, rose, vanilla, ylang-ylang) you will end up with a soap smelling like a Christmas tree. I love it, but it was a surprise.
My health, both physical and mental, is worsening. At worst, I am having several seizures a day. I’m purposefully keeping an elevated blood pressure because it keeps the seizures at bay. Red Bull is really helping, I developed a soft spot for this drink.
I still would want to write a post about sworn brotherhood and what is and what isn’t considered incest in East Asian cultures if that’s allowed. Idiocy bordering on racism (and sometimes firmly crossing into racism while vocally denying any racism in name of MORALS) has been bothering me especially strongly regarding this topic recently. I have a very strong impression that Asian media are judged much more harshly than Anglo media – not even Western, because I observed that the same harshness is applied to all European media not produced in English, completely ignoring local culture and context.
A question I want to ask: how strong are animal protections in Hollywood movies? If we watch a movie featuring an animal dying, is it acted or is it real? This question was sparked by The Suicide Squad. If you’ve seen it, you know what I mean. I am asking because until relatively recently (the 90s, I think), Poland had little to no protection of animal actors and usually when you saw an animal die on screen, it meant you saw the actor die (and sometimes they used dead animals in scenes, pretending they were alive). Knowing the film makers killed animals would forever taint a movie for me. I cannot watch Chinese dramas because I know they do not care for their crews (for example two crew member died in a fire while filming The Untamed). I couldn’t watch Deadpool 2 knowing a stunt woman died during the filming.

Date: 2021-08-10 11:02 am (UTC)As far as I’m aware, animal cruelty in movies is supposed to be purely simulated. There’s usually a disclaimer along the lines of “No animals were harmed in the making of this movie” placed in the credits for movies involving real life animals. In the case of The Suicide Squad, American Humane monitored the movie behind the scenes.

Date: 2021-08-10 10:54 am (UTC)Interesting episodes:
Beyond The Farthest Star: What stood out to me the most, was this ancient space ship that had been adrift for millennia. And it seemed to be the only remains of a previous civilization.....
Yesteryear: Quite possibly the best Star Trek piece of Star Trek media, released in the 70's.
The Magicks of Megas-tu: They travel to another dimension where people use magic. They meet the guy who's the basis for the devil, but he's a cool guy and they drink some beers. Also the people of Salem were all interdimensional beings.
The Terratin Incident: Everyone starts shrinking, and since it only affects organic matter, we learn that the crews outfits are made out of algee.
Mudd's Passion: it starts with Harry Mudd selling love potions, and ends with stiffly animated rock monsters fighting one another.
The Time Trap: The Enterprise is stuck in a pocket dimension. They find that many other ships have been trapped here, and have formed a utopia society. It's need because we see a bunch of different Star Trek aliens.
The Slaver Weapon: A billion years ago, this space empire enslaved all other sentient life in the galaxy, but there was a rebellion and everyone got wiped out. Sentient life had to re-evolve in the meantime. Some relics have been found, and have been the basis for vital technologies. Also there's a race called the Kzinti, who have had several wars against humanity. They've lost them and are currently restricted via treaties, with their government's trying to bypass them. And none of this worldbuilding can ever be mentioned again because it's based on a short story. Props for adapting the main character into Sulu, rather than Kirk the obvious choice.
The Ambergris Element: Kirk and Spock get turned into mermen.
The Jihad: In this episode a sacred relic is stolen, that will cause it's race to launch a crusade against the rest of the galaxy. It also has a warrior woman who clear want's to fuck Kirk.
How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth: Possibly the most progressive portrayal of a native American character in this franchise (and he looks like a white guy...)
The Counter-Clock Incident: The crew transport the original captain of the Enterprise, and his wife to their retirement. A more fitting finale that Turnabout Intruder.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Man, people back in 1979, must have been so disappointed. They waited a decade for this?
It's not really about anything.
Kirk, Scotty, McCoy and Spock get introductions, but Kirk just walks onto the bridge and Uhura, Chekov and Sulu go "man Kirk your so cool!"
I have five seasons of The Next Generation , which I got from the library, ready to go. Unfortunately, the latest lockdown, has prevented me from getting the rest of the Star Trek films from my university's library, so I can't watch them yet.
Well, I suppose I'm spared Code of Honor, for a little bit longer.
Apparently, The Bad Batch, will be getting a second season. It would be nice, if it improved, but I have my doubts about it. It's not as bad as Resistance, but not as good as Rebels. Eventually the writers are going to run out of Rebels characters to bring back, and then what will be left?
The trailer for the Y: The Last Man TV show has been released. I predict that the show's releases will see some captivating articles.
Well, I finished watching Better Call Saul season five. The last episode was kind of weak, because it involved an over the top and absurd climax.
I'm also going to say that Kim and Jimmy's relationship, throughout the show could have been better. Mostly it goes "Jimmy you've gone too far" "I'm sorry, I was trying to help", "Okay I'll give you another chance". They spent like three seasons without meaningfully progressing their relationship beyond that.
The Cobra Kai season four trailer was released. It was pretty bad, but we did get about two seconds worth of Terry Silver.

Date: 2021-08-10 11:14 am (UTC)"The Slaver Weapon" is most unusual as it's an adaption by Larry Niven of his completely non Star Trek related story "The Soft Weapon", the Kzinti are regular characters in many of his other novels, like the Ringworld books.

And My Hero Academia had a big moment that we've been waiting for since Chapter One.

Date: 2021-08-10 11:18 am (UTC)It does some interesting things with identity and gender (the other main character is a eunuch general serving the Yuan Dynasty, though not without his own motives), and I suppose technically qualifies as Historical Fantasy (it's not entirely clear, at least as far as I've read, how much of Zhu's interactions with fate and heaven are objective truth or her own perspective, but the Mandate of Heaven is visible as an actual glow surrounding rulers), though the fantastic elements are fairly restrained. I'm quite enjoying it.

Date: 2021-08-10 11:19 am (UTC)Having a lot of fun (and losing some sleep) with Yoku's Island Express. It’s a combination of pinball and Metroidvania-style exploration and upgrades.
I saw that Disney+ removed the 2005 Fantastic Four movie and it reminded me that I never got around to watching 2015’s Fant4stick.
The Good:
I thought they did a good job with Reed and Ben’s friendship early on.
I like that they captured Reed’s joy at discovery and tendency to obsess over a project.
Everyone had a reason to be there (which tends to be an issue with F4 origins).
The Bad:
Ben Grimm is one of the easiest characters in fiction to understand and yet this movie doesn’t (despite a promising start in the first half).
Every other character relationship suffered. Sue barely interacted with anyone but her dad and its just weird how little she’s with Reed and Johnny.
This movie is too dark. I don’t mean in the “the Thing is a mass murderer sense” (though that’s also a problem). I mean, the late-movies fights were so pitch-black that it was nearly impossible to see what was going on beyond the occasional discharge of powers.
The Ugly:
Incel Doom. I don’t even know why Doom is in this movie beyond “We have to have Doctor Doom in a F4 movie.
If you want a bad guy creeping on Sue then just use Namor.
If you want to have the plot revolve around what’s clearly meant to be the Negative Zone then use Annihilus.
The shady government guys work perfectly well as standalone antagonists in the movie they did make anyway.

Date: 2021-08-10 11:48 pm (UTC)I unlocked a new travel mechanic where you can swing from specific flowers but it doesn't control very well and requires precision timing. I accidentally flung myself off a mountain. Actually, given the number of times I almost did that that only to have the wind save me, I think I glitched myself off the mountain. I suspect that bit was meant to be idiot-proof (if frustrating) trial and error but I am just THAT bad at video games.
Game is still sold overall though.

Date: 2021-08-10 11:25 am (UTC)Where'd the year go?
It's nearly the end of the year, and still no sign of these mythical PS5s.
Been reading some of Boom Comics Power Ranger and... hmm.
Rita Repulsa secretly having a horrible past is an unusual change.
The original show suggested her parents were Evil, but genuinely loving.
The regular comics also seem to be running into the same problem IDW's Transformers comics did, as well, where all the heroes seem to be incapable of angsting or recriminating at one another, and the only ones who seem to enjoy, or even tolerate, one another's company are the side-characters and the villains.
(also there's evil Tommy who is so unimaginably uninteresting to begin with, and totally outstaying his welcome.)
There's also how it's borrowing post MM elements while still sticking with the MM era gang, but that's a minor quibble to all the ANNNNGST.
Almost found a collected edition of what I was looking for the other week in the local comic shop.
Then it turned out it was pretty badly damaged.
Poor book etiquette upsets me. Who does that to a book?
... also, missed a different collected edition which had something I was interested in reading, so upset was I by this. Ah, well.
Would be interested in reading some of the Simonson run on Thor, but that seems vanishingly rare for some reason.
There's collected editions of everything but Simonson. Weird.
Sometimes I really do think Big Finish have gone mad.
Not mad with anything, like power or greed. Just mad in the "well, let's stich these corpses together, reanimate it and see what happens!" way.
Like recasting the Twelfth Doctor because Capaldi didn't want to come back.
(which is its own separate thing, and a shame. And makes me wonder what was going on behind the scenes given he was apparently a big fan of Who before he got cast.)
Or doing some more stories about the War Doctor with an impersonator. At least that one can be understood.
Side note: The ones wi' John Hurt were, in honesty, kind of bland.
Which isn't something that should be happening when you've got John Hurt in. Gotta step up your game. Then step it up s' more.
Speaking of Who, the popular front running choice for replacing Jodie is... Michael Sheen.
...
sorry, gotta go "ugh" for a second.
Ugh.
I mean, Sheen's a good actor, even if he is also one of those actors who is just freakin' everywhere but... a white dude? Seriously?
Ugh.
no subject
Date: 2021-08-10 02:27 pm (UTC)And is it a known fact that Capaldi didn't come back because he didn't want to play the Doctor again or is that a guess based on him not coming back to do more audios? If it's the latter it could be that he is busy with other acting projects
It would be a shame if something had happened that had put him off working with Big Finish or working on Who in general :(
I agree that it would suck if they replaced Whittaker with a white dude. We have had thirteen white men in the role before now. Have another woman take over from Whittaker. Or if you have to cast a man, cast a man who isn't white. Let one of the many talented black or asian actors working in the business have a chance to be the Doctor

Date: 2021-08-10 11:40 am (UTC)The specific Thor trade I am reading is the fourth volume of Simonson's run. You know, the one with Frog Thor, Kurse ripping and tearing through Hel and Thor smiting fools during the Morlock Massacre.
As for Suicide Squad, it is after the timeskip where the squad has been disbanded and Amanda Waller has been put in prison. Also, Batman is there.
Captain Boomerang is such an unrepentant scumbag and I love him for it. The only stereotypical thing he doesn't say is about putting shrimps on the barbie. He does like drinoing Fosteds though, and real Australians think it's piss, right?
Now I primarily identify him more as a member of the Suicide Squad than as a Flash villain. Then again, I mostly stick to the Wally West Flash rather than Barry Allen's Silver Age adventures.
no subject
Date: 2021-08-10 10:36 pm (UTC)And yeah, it's Boomerang's long stint with the Suicide Squad under Ostrander's pen that turned him from a second-rate rogue into a first-class weasel and it's a shame that his use post-Squad has been so uneven. (Including the time he died for a while...)

I'm gonna say something controversial: Eda's harpy design is gross. It would have been perfect if all the hair had come from her head. But the lateral locks come from her ears. They are ear hairs. Ear hairs. E A R H A I R S. Ick. What next, nose hairs?
I was disappointed to find that the Fandom is full of antis, which is having a really bad effect on fanworks. Since insane screaming children are driving the adults out of Fandom, the quality of fanfiction is on average really low. It's really obvious that most experienced and educated writers are just not participating. This could be depressing foreshadowing for the status of future Fandoms in general.

The last few episodes have been intense for me on an emotional level, and I've been using fanart as a means for trying to process everything that's been happening in the show, from Lumity to King's new powers. And the texts that Luz send Amity are just too damn adorable, I fear my heart might explode in a surge of rainbows.

Date: 2021-08-10 02:29 pm (UTC)So, this week I watched some more episodes of Naruto . I'm currently at the "quest for Tsunade" arc, which is where I stopped watching when I was really into the anime back when I was a teen. So far so good: Jiraya's still a creep, but his lessons to Naruto are good to watch, and if I remember correctly Tsunade's a pretty complex character. Akatsuki was also introduced a couple episodes ago and it was a fun arc, really shows how high the power level is when you start to look outside the Chunin Exam arc, and I quite like Itachi and Kisame (the fact that Gai is the one to save Kakashi and the others from Kisame with a single kick is priceless though).
I've also watched a French/Brazilian movie from 1959 called Orfeu do Carnaval , which I think is simply titled Black Orpheus in most international releases. It was amazing, touching retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydike set in a Black neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro during the Carnaval. I can't recommend it enough.
I've been playing Warhammer 40k: Gladius , which is a fine, if very simple, strategy game. I probably paid too much for it though. Anyway, I've already completed a campaign with the Aeldari and the Space Marines; sadly, I forgot to save my Aeldari game and will have to play again if I want to ever run a late-game campaign with them. My current playthrough is with the orks, which are quite fun, even if I'm missing some goblins running around my units (I think they're called "grots" in the 40k setting? Or is that AoS?).
It is likely that a lot of bad news will start to come out of Brazil in the coming months, so I've decided to post some songs here by Brazilian singers and groups in order to counterbalance all the bad stuff. It's all based on my personal taste and my mood on the given Tuesday, but I hope it'll be interesting for the community. Today I'll leave you with some rock n'roll by Engenheiros do Hawaii, a band from my state which was relatively famous in the 90's. This song, Crônica (which means "chronicle") is from their first album, way back in the 80's, so the sound is not particularly refined, and the lyrics are quite chaotic. Which is probably why I've been listening to it so much this week XD. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

Date: 2021-08-10 03:27 pm (UTC)The characterization of Cassandra Cain annoyed me a lot. I have no problem with the actress but there's no reason why that character should have been called Cassandra in the first place and they effectively ruined any chance for a faithful DCEU Cass in the future.
Finally, there is no reason why this couldn't have been PG-13 with an R-rated director's cut later. The Dark Knight was probably more 'adult' than this film in terms of content.
no subject
Date: 2021-08-10 04:48 pm (UTC)Why did the film need to be as violent as that was? I think PG-13 or so would have probably attracted more people than a needless R.

Date: 2021-08-10 04:33 pm (UTC)The Avatar TLA TTRPG kickstarter has passed the $4million mark.
Went to theaters again this week. Saw Snake Eyes, The Suicide Squad, and Jungle Cruise.
Suicide Squad was fun. Biggest surprise for me was that gur wniryva ghearq bhg gb or hfrshy va gur raq.
Jungle Cruise was fun but wildly miscast. Perfectly fun way to spend an afternoon while you're doing chores or whatnot but not a great film. Put the Mummy, Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle, and Pirates of the Carribean into a blender and you get this.
Snake Eyes was fun. It was basically the story of a ninja clan with a bit of paramilitary organization in the background. It didn't try too hard to make it serious or grounded in reality. Probably the closest we've come to making GI Joe work as a movie in this decade.
I have decided to go through some old GI Joe comics to try and get a handle on what, if anything, made the concept work in the first place so I can improve my judgmental assessment of the franchise going forward. Got the first GI Joe Classics volume from Comixology and I'm two issues in so far

But if I now say I don't care for a female character, it's "CHOKE ON YOUR MISOGYNY YOU WOMAN-HATING HATER OF WOMEN!"
Sit the fuck down, nobody owes your fave shit just because she's female.

Been watching some more American Horror stories. While I loved the opening two parter and the third episode I've found the next two a little hit or miss. I was deeply dissapointed that the Killer Santa episode with Danny Trejo was just about a guy dressed as Santa. I was hoping for basically a horror movie version of Robot Santa from Futurama here
Come on now American Horror Story...you've given us Cthulhu Aliens, vampires, ghosts, witches, minotaurs, sentient robots and the Anti Christ but you couldn't give us Evil Santa?
