In the past 10-15 years the main joke of Dredd has turned less funny and more angry and bitter. -- Al Ewing

Angry and bitter, but still a nice commentary on both sidesism, "niceness", and also the wages of collaboration. And the absurdism within the system too.

In some ways the Dredd Universe might actually be preferrable to our own, because while Dredd acts ludicrously harsh, at least HE treats everyone equally under the law

That to me is the iron law of Dredd "likeability"

This is nice. I always like these more absurd Kafkaesque Dredd stories more than the ones that are either straight up action cop movie or political tragedies.

I'm one of the few people who prefer the Stallone movie to the Urban one. Sci-fi The Raid is cool and all, but my preferred Dredd is a weirdo who witness a suicide and tries to ticket the corpse for littering.

I think the Stallone and Urban movies represent two halves of the whole. The grimdark violence and the absurdist system. When all is said and done, this is still a man who, in the comics, once sent someone to the isocubes for reporting a crime to him, because they reported it in the wrong the place. Then he roared off on his lawgiver for some brutality noir-ism.

And Dredd did once shoot a pigeon for getting too close to a city tax inspector once too.

Yeah, one day we'll have a movie with Urban's performance and the Stallone movie's understanding of the comic's sense of humor, and it'll be the first Dredd movie I fully enjoy.

I think the Stallone movie would be better regard if it weren't for Stallone taking the damn helmet off for pretty much most of it. And I do get the argument that technically comics-Dredd takes his helmet off and his face isn't secret to anyone in them, but it is to the reader; so I feel that that argument is disingenuous at best. Even in the comics when Dredd has his helmet off, there is always something blocking his face, or he is wearing another face covering, or he has had some sort of superscience face altering treatment so nobody knew he was Dredd at the time. Maybe we can get a special edition which adds a helmet or facecovering through CGI. I'll start a petition, Release the Helmet Cut!!
