In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

Honestly, between the chaos in Afghanistan ad the dire situation in Haiti following it's earthquake, looking through the news has been more bleak than usual. So you'll forgive me if I just... don't, this week.

Veteran British actress Una Stubbs passed away aged 84. Known to an older generation as the ghastly Aunt Sally in Jon Pertwee's "Worzel Gummidge" series, more recently she found fame as Mrs Hudson in "Sherlock".

So we had new seasons of Titans (Which dropped the first three episodes in one go), Star Trek: Lower Decks and the launch of "What If...?" (Which has it's own thread elsewhere).

We also had the end of season 1 of "The Bad Batch", which I'm afraid I just couldn't get into that much. A bit better than "Resistance", but no "Rebels" or "The Clone Wars" IMHO.

Late addition - A trailer for the Star Wars anime: Star Wars: Visions" has just dropped

The "Wishmaker" episode of Miraculous Ladybug added a weird, but potentially fascinating, new corner to the ongoing "Love Square" dynamic between our two main heroes and their secret identities, as a third person with a vested interest suddenly learns a lot more secrets than they were expecting to find out.

Random question? Any youtube channel recommendations? I've recently rediscoverd Toy Galaxy, which is great for covering old toy lines (and their TV shows where relevant), and I notice that B Dylan Hollis, who recreates old time recipes (some of them downright odd) on TikTok now has a YT channel. Always fun when he finds ones that actually work a lot better than they sound like they should.

Youtube channels, hmm.

I quite appreciate the aesthetic and intent of Contrapoints and Philosophy Tube, even if I don't always entirely agree with their arguments.

Generally less politically, I find Matt Colville's videos on roleplaying and dungeon mastering interesting and instructive, even though my philosophy diverges sharply from his on some points.

Jacob Geller and Noah Caldwell-Gervais offer interesting takes on video games (and Geller, increasingly, on other topics), although Gervais's tend to be... what's the video equivalent of a doorstopper?

The Hu are a Mongolian folk-rock band. Their channel includes some pretty kickass music and videos, and also an incredibly wholesome series called "Hu's in the Kitchen," which is them, sometimes with their hosts, cooking together in various places while on tour.

Ah Gervais, I enjoy his videos, but they can be a bit long. The latest one a retrospective on Resident Evil was seven hours long. That franchise has racked up a lot of spin-offs over the years.

Oh God, I realized something awful. I think the local mural of David Bowie from Labyrinth has been removed. Oh, this is terrible.

Well, looks like I'm not getting anything new on Comxiology any time soon. Basically, my card expired, and I got sent a new card with the same number, but I forgot to update it on my Comixology account. So, it keeps on getting declined, and there seems to be no way I can actually get it to accept it.

I got a book I enjoyed from my childhood but never owned a copy of. It seems to have been out of print for years, but it's been republished at the ludicrous price of $55.

I helped fund the Avatar The Last Airbender roleplaying game. Why without out my $20, it would only be like four million dollars overfunded.

Oh, look they announced the casting for the live action Avatar remake show. I'm not going to watch it, so it doesn't really matter to me.

The finale of The Bad Batch highlights how it's a very uneven show. I was also let-down that it didn't end with them saying "Time to send the cast of Republic Commando (2006) after them". I'm becoming increasingly worried that it and The Mandalorian will have an ongoing subplot, dedicated to try and legitimise Rise of Skywalker.

Predicting (correctly) that lockdown would continue, I ordered the first four Star Trek films on Ebay. They arrived.

Wrath of Khan: A good film. But what it really needed was to knock off a thirty-year-old film, the that filmmakers seemed to have a very shallow understanding of. And confused messages about conspiracy theories. That and scenes of women in their underwear.

Huh, we saw that Chekov's career actually moved forward in-between films, and now he's First-Office on another ship. I'm sure soon he'll be back on the Enterprise saying "Yes Captain", where he belongs.

The moral is that if someone offers you the choice of going to prison, or the opportunity of settling a planet, take the first option. Khan learnt that the hard way.

Search for Spock. Spock is back. Sure, the Enterprise was blown up, but with the death of Kirk's son the status quo is restored. That was an okay film. Sure, bringing back Spock was always going to undermine the previous films ending, but they did follow up on the theme of the Genesis device's potential as a weapon.

It bugs me that Uhura didn't get to go on the adventure.

Sometimes the Klingon's speak English, but then they'll say stuff in alien in the same scene. This implies to me that they're actually speaking in English and randomly switch back and forth for no reason.

Also, they seem to have made the Federation less of a utopia, as they seem to have secret police in bars who arrest people, and send them to "funny farms". That was odd.

The Voyage Home: They go back in time to save the whales. Fantastic, that's what science fiction is about.
It also allowed me to experience the primitive and barbaric year of 1986.

Tomorrow I will start watching Star Trek The Next Generation. Within the next week I will have watched Code of Honour. [Deep sigh...]

Forgive me for bringing more bad news.
We have all seen the coverage of Afghanistan, as it’s the main topic of the news this week. This posts lists several people and organizations you can donate to: https://omgthatdress.tumblr.com/post/659623743782617088 This includes the crew of We Meet The World channel, who all had to flee. Please donate to somebody if you can. Same goes for Haiti, though I admit I have no clue what Haitian orgs we can donate to – Red Cross is always my go to option.
28 die in a fuel tank explosion in Lebanon: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/8/15/fuel-tanker-explodes-in-lebanons-akkar-at-least-20-killed There’s currently a fuel crisis in Lebanon, and people are desperate to access fuel. This was explosion of an illegal tank where owner hoarded fuel. It was not safe, but the army didn’t check it before opening the distribution of the fuel.
The massive fires make the sky over Greece turn red: https://news.abplive.com/videos/news/world-horrific-visuals-of-red-sky-from-greece-after-massive-wildfire-1474939 In Turkey, the fires were extinguished, but damage remains. Haytap NGO runs a field hospital for animals who suffered from the fires. You can read their page and support them here: https://www.facebook.com/HaytapEnglish/ Malakasa refugee camp in Greece had to be evacuated due to fires, and the refugees had only minutes to gather their belongings and run. It was already dark, and many people didn’t have a chance to pack even their documents and meds. ¾ of the country is burning, and the most important agricultural region is heavily damaged.
As I wrote last week, the law nationalizing the media passed through Polish parliament. Now it has to pass through senate, where opposition has the majority. If it is rejected, it will return to parliaments where it can pass only with total majority (more in favor than against and not voting) – but the original voting already had more votes in favour than against and abstaining combined. What’s more, initially the bill was rejected, but the chairwoman of the parliament decided to dismiss the result and have the bill be voted on again – and in the meantime, the governing party managed to bribe a few of opposition MOPs to vote in favour. The party doesn’t even try to hide its corruption, but because they have all the judical power, nobody can do anything about it.
The European Union is finally taking steps, limiting financial support for the regions of Poland that called themselves LGBT-free zones. There’s an internal pressure in the affected regions to dismiss the discriminatory bills, while the catholic church and the government put pressure to leave them. The EU also threatened financial consequences for Poland in general for dismantling its justice system. Poland rejected the ultimatum. I am not waiting what the consequences will be. I really hope this government will fall.
Israel froze diplomatic relationships with Poland and recalled its ambassador over the restitution law (more details here – note that unlike what Reuters writes the law doesn’t single out Jewish victims or victims of Nazi Germany: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/polands-president-signs-bill-limit-ww2-property-restitution-claims-2021-08-14/). The law was written over numerous false claims of property ownership leading to expulsion of tenants from blocks of flats and the rents skyrocketing in the 90s (it’s a very complex topic that far exceeds the boundaries of a simple comment). Current government of Israel, while doubtlessly the best one in 25 years, is made of a wide coalition of all kinds of parties unstable both internally and when it comes to popular support, and thus prone to dramatic political actions to gain support. Still, I believe Israeli side should have been consulted while writing the bill.
I am feeling long-term and potentially permanent effects of covid infection. I cannot sleep on my back, as I start choking on air. Face masks other than the duck beak type ones also cause me to be short of breath while moving. Garlic, before my favourite flavour, now stinks unbearably and I cannot use it while cooking. I suspect my increased attacks may also be a result of the infection. I feel horrible and extremely stressed due to all these events. Actually, I feel suicidal pretty much all the time. I indulge myself in overeating and spending way too much money on Shining Nikki, neither being a good coping method. Even overeating makes me sad, because I realized that delicious Greek cookies I just ate come from a region devastated by fires and I cannot be sure the farm the honey comes from still exists. :(
Gun Girlz, precursor of Honkai Impact 3rd (basically the same story but played in 2d chibi style with two additional main characters but minus the fan favourite Fuhua), will close its Western and SEA servers in two months. You can no longer download the app. The game was never popular in English fandom and the Chinese server is still running, but it makes me somewhat sad. This is a video compilation of the complete story of the original timeline of Gun Girlz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oLm2WNzs4k
On a much lighter note, I wrote a list of my favourite LGBT+ movies for mature audiences: https://www.pillowfort.social/posts/2309151 This is a selection of my more recent favourites, filtering out vintage classics to a minimum. Only after I compiled it, I realized all but one movie focus at least in part on white characters, and the one movie without major white characters is an anime. I guess unconscious bias hit everyone. (I wonder if multitude of nations of origin counts for diversity though. Those 17 movies were produced by 16 countries in 10 languages.) I thought about more of my favourites, and as the list goes longer it features more countries of origin and more languages, but with exception of a few East or Southeast Asian movies and anime films, they all focus on white characters. I don’t know how to feel about it.
While the essay on sworn brotherhood is probably too tangential for this community, this video is an excellent explanation of what sworn brotherhood/sisterhood meant for Chinese people and in Chinese culture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIQY6bIu1co I REALLY recommend this channel, the creators are East Asians who talk about East Asian history and cultures in depth rarely found in English outside academic publications. My other favourite is PBS Eons, a channel dedicated to paleobiology with beautiful illustrations and accessible language: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzR-rom72PHN9Zg7RML9EbA

I shall check that list out!

I'm delighted the EU is taking action against Poland's truly disgusting and hateful government and I hope that they will continue to do so until Poland is forced to reverse its recent despicable and fascistic actions against their LGBT citizens and their citizens in general.

A while ago, Comixology was a having a sale on Moon Night collections and I got some of the Epics Collections with Moon Knight's first solo series. I finally got around to reading the first one yesterday and I have to say they are pretty good so far.

It takes a while for Moon Knight to find his feet as a character, but things soon start getting good when Bill Sienkiewicz comes on as artist.

I tried to read Archie World Tour, but gave up shortly after the first issue. The writer seemed to be under the impression that England still used shillings and half-pennies. Bear in mind this was published in 2011!

I have, on a couple occasions, snarked to British customers complaining about dimes. While I admit that, from an ease of use standpoint, the fact that an American dime, worth ten cents, is both smaller than a penny and only indicates it's value as being "One dime," is not ideal, damned if I'm going to take any guff about it from a country that didn't decimalize until the seventies!

Atop the Fourth Wall is great for funny comic book reviews and interesting retrospectives. It's also in that rare category of "Youtube channels about comic books that aren't run by someone who attends weekly cross burnings" as Linkara is actually a normal person and not a deranged bigot

Pushing Up Roses is great for funny recaps of tv shows and reviews on adventure games. Allison Pregler's channel has lots of funny tv show content as well

Rose and Rosie are always delightful :)

Phelous's channel has some hillarious bad movie reviews especially his ongoing descent into insanity as he subjects himself to Dingo Pictures and Golden Films "Work"

Honest Movie Trailers can be quite funny sometimes as well especially when they go all in on mocking something truly awful. Their trailer for Rise of Skywalker had me in hysterics

Moving into the busy season at work, after a brief summer lull.

Current book I'm reading is The Dark Ages, by W.P. Ker, a survey of European literature from approximately 500-1100 A.D. It's thick going, as Professor Ker quotes large blocks of the original languages untranslated.

So my latest blog post is about a film noir, Raw Deal, which is heavy on the noir part: http://www.skjam.com/2021/08/15/movie-review-raw-deal-1948/

Skipping over current events because I feel completely unqualified to discuss it … which doesn’t seem to stop a lot of other Americans.

Obligatory “I typed this one in advance and made some last minute changes so this’ll likely be disjointed”. Given the subject matter, it seems appropriate.

The last Evangelion movie is finally available in the US … but only on Amazon Prime Video so I resubscribed for a discounted one-week trial. (Note to self: Cancel Prime)

Of course, I haven’t seen it yet because I need to watch the rest of the reboot movies over the weekend. I’d forgotten just how much of a bad idea it is to binge this anime franchise set in the far-off post-apocalyptic future year of 2015 (and 2030).

Wow, things get dark in 3.33 even by Eva standards. Granted I don’t have high hopes for the real 2030 the way things are going.

I think I’m going to need a feel-good palate-cleanser soon. Anyone have any suggestions? I think I might resume my Muppet marathon (I never did finish season five).

Edit: Okay, watched the last movie and am still processing it. I’m tempted to talk about a major character reveal and how it relates to a character who got more of a spotlight in the original but it seems like a potential minefield. Non-spoiler thought: Gendo Ikari sucks and everyone (including the fandom) is way too hard on these child soldiers…though a lot of them are technically in their mid-40s by the end. Being an eternal teenager seems worse than a lot of what might happen to humanity in the end.

It probably wasn’t the intended effect (given that it coincides with a major character death) but I snickered when “Joy to the World” started playing. “Hey, our inability to use ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ on the Netflix dub really ticked people off so let’s use something in the public domain. Preferably something to tie into all that Christian imagery we’re using”.

Seriously though, I never know if the religious references mean anything.

Most of the time they don’t (by the admissions of the series creators) but sometimes they do.

A major character is secretly named after Mary and Judas and its treated like a huge revelation but we never find out what it means.

At first, I assumed they were an Angel (there are certainly parallels with Kaworu) but nope…nothing ever comes of it.

YouTube channels. Hmm.

There's always Fredrick Knudsen's Down the Rabbit Hole for some fascinating stuff. (Never thought I'd be invested in a 2 hour video about a chess playing computer, but here we are.)I

I have what I call a Shadow Fascination with public events that become planning disasters (Dashcon, Fire Festival, TanaCon), so videos about things like that draw me in.

Summoning Salt for speedrunning documentaries. His vid for the speedrunning history of Ninja Gaiden is a delight, and it features my boy Arcus. Arcus does speedruns with a calmness that borders on supernatural (and proving you can do so without the excessive swearing that seems to be the standard.)

Brandon Tenold's B movie reviews are hysterical.

I know Nostalgia Critic is way problematic, but I admit to liking his Dark Toons series, and that's it.

Ever since the Agatha reveal on WandaVision I got really into reaction videos. Favorites are Married2theReal (I find them an adorable couple) and Preview'd (I find them an adorable how-the-hell-are-they-not-a-couple. Bonus points for actually watching MOTU: Revelation and having the right reactions to it.)

Singers: Peter Hollens, and Amanda Lee (AmaLee). AmaLee's English covers of Fairy Tail theme songs are great background name for me. Also NateWantsToBattle, who does a collaborative of the Miraculous Ladybug theme song with Cristina Valenzuela (Ladybug's English VA).

I still like watching the Walkers and their affiliates’ stuff (most of the time anyway). I think his biggest sin comes moreso from what he should have done rather than anything he did. Going over stuff he actually likes has really breathed new life into the Critic in my opinion.

My poor Airazor’s gone from being an eagle to a kiwi because I’m a dunderhead and accidentally snapped both her wings off. That’s probably my fault for stressing the joints so much, but why they didn’t use pins for these specific joints instead of the plastic hinge they went with is beyond me. I’ve tried superglue, but the areas that have broken are too small so that snaps off again and now they’ve warped the plastic.
•Is there anywhere you can buy specific Transformer parts without having to buy a whole other Transformer?
•Is there anywhere that sells those little metal rods/pins used for articulation? Can I use that to theoretically fix the broken joint?
•If I really have to, does anyone know of a strong enough superglue or epoxy or what have you that’ll stick on and not break under the stress of moving the joint?

You know, I get not liking a character. I get hating a character.

But who the fuck watches a scene where a severely abused child is driven to attempt suicide, and goes “lol eat shit”?

"We have seen too many broken white boys so it's impossible not to want to see him bullied to an early grave."

It's very possible if you are not a sociopath.

See, this is related to that whole if-you-dislike-a-female-character-you-must-be-a-misogynist attitude that's getting more and more prevalent in certain subsects of Fandom that used to be tiny but now are getting larger. It's starting to feel less like a movement for social justice and more like a cult. MINORITY GOOD WHITE MEN EVIL, UNLESS MINORITY DISAGREES WITH ME THEN MINORITY RACE/GENDER/SEXUALITY TRAITOR AND MUST BE BURNED AT THE STAKE, AND UNLESS IT'S A WHITE MAN I LIKE THEN HE DID NOTHING WRONG EVER, ANYWAY I'M ALWAYS RIGHT EVEN IF I 180 LIKE A TOP AND IF YOU DON'T SAY SO I'LL UNLEASH MY RABID FOLLOWERS ON YOU!

Situation with the dog is growing more stressful. Nobody's getting a proper night's sleep no more, because they seem to forget how to sit down in their basket, and if by some miracle they do, it's often only for twenty minutes before they decide they need to pee again.
And that's assuming they don't wake up and suddenly let rip before anyone notices. Or get confused after being let out and just stand there for fifteen minutes.
ugh.

So the other Thursday, The Watch was on the Beeb, and I decided to give it a look.
...
As an adaptation of Sir Pterry's work, it's awful. But in a way, it's also so awful it's oddly compelling to watch in a way a straighter adaptation might not be (looking at you, Good Omens).
It's got charisn'tma. It's the Nobby Nobbs of adaptations.
Mind, there are a few moderately funny bits. The retirement home security system. The goblins.
Nothing on Pratchett's level, but... well, that was never a fight that could be won.

Bought a collected edition of the early New Mutants the other day.
The Claremont stuff, obviously. Such a shame after he stopped writing they immediately cancelled the title and the New Mutants disappeared into obscurity for years and years.
(The local does, apparently, have collected editions of the Simonson run, for reasons that elude me.)
Enjoying it. Though, given it's Claremont, there's surprisingly less lesbian subtext than I was expecting. Still, early days.
(also: Claremont writing Scottish people... urrrrggh... pretty sure Scotland had cinemas in the 1980s, Chris.)

And the collected edition of The Captain from Captain America. Really helped with a long train journey, that did.
It's kind of surprising how early John Walker is... not a totally unlikable bastard? After seeing the flanderized "ooh rah 'MURICA" version you usually get, seeing him like that is odd. Even more so given before he's made Cap, he is an unlikable bastard.
As for Steve... much as he's lovable, 80s Steve is so naïve sometimes it's painful to read. It's amazing Falcon never slaps him, because damn, Steve.
Can't see modern day Falcon being so willing to go along with getting arrested for stopping some supervillains (ah, Marvel cops.), or Steve's frankly idiotic notion that letting themselves be arrested rather than explaining themselves is somehow a good idea.

The Talk page on wikipedia's article on the Afghanistan war has been in meltdown over the last couple of days since the loss of the war there. It is split half and half people saying that it is time to change the article's name and write Taliban victory on it, and people turning mental cartwheels to say it isn't over, the Western Allies have not been defeated, and the war is still ongoing with the Northern Alliance poised to make a breakthrough from the one small pocket they control any day now. There is a real sense of American editors just not being able to admit losing.

It'd almost be funny if the situation on the ground wasn't so tragic and heartbreaking for the Afghanistan people, especially LGBTQ people, women in general, and the allies who worked with us for so long. I get that this day had to come eventually, that there was no hope of winning or nationbuilding at this point, and the Afghan Army (aside from a few special forces regiments) was never going to do much in the way of holding out on its own, but it is heartbreaking nonetheless. Sadly I don't see much hope of the Western Powers in general, and here at home in the UK in specific given our Home Secretary, doing much to help refugees either.

Got my first vaccine shot today! I was number 97 on the line and had to stand for about two hours by sunlight, but it was worth it. Hope I don't get any side effects since tonight is my grandma's birthday.

I watched the second Fear Street movie this weekend, after coming back from a long family trip. I was very tired so it could've affected my judgement, but I generally enjoyed it. Less predictable than the first but with less sympathetic characters as well.

Early reactions for Marvel Studio's Shang-Chi seem to be overwhemingly positive. As someone who likes the character but never really read his classical stories, I'm very excited to watch the movie.

In case anybody here plays Dead by Daylight , Pinhead from Hellraiser has been announced as the new killer, while the Stranger Things characters will become unavailable to purchase due to licencing issues between Behaviour and Netflix.

Finally, my Brazilian song recommendation this week is Não identificado, by Gal Costa. Gal is one of the greatest singers in the history of Brazilian music, with a very distinctive voice, and also one of my personal favourites. This song plays at the start of 2019's movie Bacurau , a Brazilian speculative fiction film which almost made it to the Oscars, and which I also reccomend.

Riverdale returned last week following a hiatus of a few months, and... meh. While I'm the first to admit the show has never been exactly Breaking Bad-quality TV, at least the writers and actors once seemed to be having fun with the deliberate cheesiness and, er, loose interpretations of the comics' core and supporting characters. That's why I've kept watching. But with the latest episode, I got the feeling that both the writers and actors are getting tired of the whole deal and would rather be doing anything else.

Perhaps for related reasons, it seems the Onion A.V. Club editors have decided that the most recent weekly Riverdale episode review would be the last. Which for me will take much of the fun out of watching... checking the review and comments after watching a new episode had become something of a ritual for me.

Preorders for the Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Ultimate Edition release (Blu-Ray and digital) open in less than two days. All that's been announced (last I heard) is that the package consists of all 26 TV episodes plus the movies Death (True) and End of Evangelion. No word yet on which dub/sub it'll come with. Much LCL has been spilled, within the fandom, over which version is better, so offering both the old ADV dub/sub and the newer Netflix one as options would seem the right thing to do. Also no word as to whether the TV episodes will include the "Fly Me to the Moon" EDs for each episode. (Unavailable on Netflix due to song licensing costs.)

YouTube channel recommendations? I currently subscibe to Overly Sarcastic Productions (history, mythology and literature), PBS Space Time (astrophysics) and Terrible Writing Advice (writing, using a humourous "what NOT to do" approach).

I enjoy Overly Sarcastic Productions a lot especially when they talk about specific writers and their work or specific stories

I'd like to hope they'll just let Riverdale end when it's so bad it's good but this is the network that kept running Supernatural long after the point everyone who worked on it was praying for an asteroid to hit the earth and end their suffering so...

AC Valhalla: Siege of Paris has been and gone. It was good fun, and I'm looking forward to what comes next in year 2. The DLC was much more challenging than the main game, or even the Ireland expansion, and the story was engrossing

I’m sort of interested in Valhalla because unlike Odyssey that actually looks like an Assassin’s Creed game (both story and gameplay wise), but I’ve heard they really whitewash (as in glorify/sanitise, not as in racelift) the Vikings’ invasion of the British Isles and that makes me really uncomfortable. At least you can easily ignore the whaling minigame in IV, sacking monasteries looks important enough and that’d be weird if the game never addressed how messed up that is.

4th movie in the Rebuild of Evangelion was released via Amazon on friday the 13th.

Anno has said that the Rebuild was what he wanted Evangelion to be without his depression acting as a filter. My thought is "can we see what it would be like if you didn't have daddy issues?"

but it has ended. and this time he means it. except he DOES have some ideas for other stories told in that setting. so, who knows what will happen.

In fairness, our hero rides his mother into battle so it isn't JUST daddy issues.

Then there's ... wait, what's the plural of "Rei Ayanami"? In any case, they did them (and Asuka) dirty in the new movies.
