DC announce a new all-ages BATGIRLS book
Sep. 15th, 2021 05:43 pmIf the Robin's get a book, it's only fair that the Batgirls do too, don't you think?
And since DC keep surprising us with interesting and fun sounding Bat-books lately, well here we are!

BATGIRLS #1
Batgirls Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown, who are only able to navigate the dark, gritty, and oftentimes scary Gotham City by leaning on each other’s friendship.
Mentored by Oracle, the Batgirls move to the other side of town where Barbara Gordon can keep a better eye on them while the hacker Seer is still invading their lives. Steph may be too rash sometimes, and Cass doesn’t speak much—but what they lack in similarities they make up for with their mutual respect and love for each other…and what makes them stronger together as Batgirls! This rebellious group of Super Heroes team up to kick ass, and try to make it as normal teenagers in this pizza slumber party of a series, packed with energy, attitude, and friendship.

It's supposed to be an encyclopedia on female characters in DC comics. It's HUGE, and has at least a small section of any remotely relevant female character that ever appeared in DC comics...
...except for Stephanie and Cassandra!
Steph and Cass are completely absent. Relatively minor characters like Katana get a full article, but there is zero mention of the girl who was Batgirl for 15 years, or the girl who was both Robin and Batgirl.
Given that the author openly expressed her love for Cass and Steph on social media, and that this book came out around the time Didio was pushing the hardest to bury Steph and Cass to push Barbara's return as Batgirl, the logical conclusion is that excluding any mention of them from the encyclopedia was editorially-mandated.

Date: 2021-09-15 05:44 pm (UTC)On the other hand, " pizza slumber party of a series " is the kind of solicit copy that makes you dread one-note characterization that forgets that the characters' previous history included more than that one note.

Date: 2021-09-15 06:55 pm (UTC)It's interesting to see whether it's canon...
Then again, it could be.
While I had some issues with Steph's run as Batgirl, it's nice to see them both back in the spotlight.
Also giving them thier own town so they don't fall into other characters shadow or narrative.
Could be good.

Date: 2021-09-16 10:58 pm (UTC)Between this and Robins, I assume I have entered some strange parallel universe where DC actually gives me the things I want. I await the backfire.

Date: 2021-09-17 01:11 pm (UTC)Steph and Cass are both fun and I love when they team up together
I would like to hope we get Steph/Cass made canon
I mean DC made Tim Drake bi at last, maybe now Didio is gone DC actually has the courage to stop pretending these characters are straight
