Al Simmons being sent to gell when he died started making less and less sense by the standards Todd made for the universe, so he made a MAJOR retcon.

it was been heavily implied Al and his at the time wife Wanda couldn't have a child because he was infertile or at least kept putting it off. That changed to him deciding not to have children because the world was terrible, then Wanda said she was pregnant.

And then Al punched her in the stomach, leading to a miscarriage,

It made no sense for the character we've read about for more than 100 issues and one of the first black superheroes to get a full theatre release. It tainted the franchise for me.

So instead of getting a vasectomy or just an honest conversation with his wife he did a domestic abuse

If that makes you feel any better, I believe that whole thing was retconned around #250 or so as the Violator (or Malebolgia? One or the other) manipulating/gaslighting Spawn into killing himself so he wouldn’t be around to interfere with their nefarious plots.
