This EC comic is not a horror story but it did serve the basis for an episode of HBO's Tales from the Crypt with Kirk Douglas in one of the lead roles.

This first appeared in Shock SuspenStories #1. I am posting the whole story as Dark Horse has released this it as part of as a free sampler.

This was one of the first non-MAD EC comic stories I ever read, and together with the same issue's lead story, "The Neat Job," it got me hooked on the publisher's classic "New Trend" work. It did take me a few momenets to adjust to seeing Jack Davis's art in a completely serious story, since I'd previously only been familiar with his decades of work onMAD.

Hoo-wee. EC sure didn't get any less grim when they did something without ghosts 'n' goblins.

By the way, are there any other pure suspense/SF stories you found interesting? I vaguely recall, from an older friend's blog, one about a chess genius committing murder...

I’ll take a look, I remember posting a few during the livejournal days. The only chess-related one that I can find though is a horror story.

Wiki says the adaptation was originally going to be for a different kind of "Adaptations of EC Comics Anthology Series."

Was originally produced as part of a TV anthology pilot called Two Fisted Tales made by the same producers of Tales from the Crypt. Conceived as a more suspense/thriller driven series featuring a ghostly gunfighter Mr. Rush (played by William Sadler), the pilot was ultimately not picked up for series.

I know I shouldn't enjoy watching the son die, but an Officer abandoning his men kind of pisses me off in the worst possible way.

The thing is... the son is right, the father cared just about himself. He clearly pushed the son to be in the army when he never wanted to be there and he was the one to put those men in danger just to prove a point. He did not about those men and he did not care about his son.

I think the worst part might be that he didn't even have a defense during the court-martial, because he was clearly counting on everyone else in his unit dying. Weirdly enough, I think I might've respected him slightly more if only he'd come up with a half-assed lie like, "Dad, I found one of our men was in league with the Germans! I don't know how many others are working with him, so I had to run back alone to warn you!"

You wonder if the adaptation made the change it did to the ending because that change felt more natural.
