Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Oct. 5th, 2021 10:36 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
The Pandora Papers, the third, and largest, leak of confidential financial documents of the global uber-wealthy (following on from The Panana Papers and the Paradise Papers), has unearthed vastly more financially dubious matters about tax avoidance, property ownership, political funding and fiscal hypocrisy than those involved would probably have liked.
The UK Government's plans to help sort out the Supply Chain issues with the immeidate release of 300 short term working visa's for European HGV drivers, and another 4,700, to come, has had only 127 applicants... from the entire EU bloc. I can't imagine why they weren't snapped up [/irony]. But not to worry, apparently it's NOT a crisis, it's just "one of those things" or somesuch and absolutely nothing to do with Brexit. Uh-huh.
No matter how bad your work day is today, remember that someone, somewhere did something which resulted in Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, all having a global blackout for several hours yesterday, and they probably know who they are (even if no one else has a clue). For some the blackout was deeply frustrating, for others, something of a relief I'm sure.
The first new treatment for sickle-cell anaemia in twenty years is being rolled out in the UK.
Bardcore cover of an 80's classic, because why not?
A trailer for "Tick, Tick BOOM!", a movie about the life of Jonathan Larson, who create dthe musicla Rent) has dropped. Lin Manuel Miranda directs and Andrew Garfield stars.
Shorter than usual due to work pressures (and no, I don't work for Facebook) but away you go!
Question of the week: Anyone got any "hidden gem" streaming shows to recommend?

Date: 2021-10-05 11:14 am (UTC)The Best of Both Worlds Part 2: Patrick Steward strips down to his underpants and gets covered in grey makeup.
This was a good episode but the way they resolved the cliff-hanger was kind of lame. ("Mr Worf blow him up" "It didn't work sir"). There are consequences for this, so it's not that bad, but fans in 1990 must have felt let down.
And they remembered they could use the saucer separation. Will wonders never cease!
Family: Throughout this episode I was hoping that Picard and his brother would get into a fight. And my dream came true. They punched one another and rolled about in the mud.
Picard's brother, sister-in-law and nephew seem like decent people. It's a shame they'll die for cheap drama. An awful fate....
We go to a French vineyard, but the only people we see have English accents. This leads me to believe that at some point prior to the 24th century, England conquered France.
Also, we learn that Worf was raised by an Eastern European couple. Learning that he's Slavic explains much about Worf.
Brothers: Data's father brainwashes him into hijacks the Enterprise. Data has bad luck with family, doesn't he?
Do all Lore episodes have him steal Data's identity? Because it's getting kind of old.
Suddenly Human: The crew comes across a human raised by the aliens who killed his parents. Oddly the writers ignored the obvious parallels with Worf.
Most of the main cast came across as kind of bigoted in this one, I feel. I realize they were extras but maybe Dr Crushers' medical team should be focusing on the four other members of the alien crew and not just the one who's human?
Legacy: We meet Tasha Yar's sister. She wears a jump suit that highlights her rear. Oh yeah!
The Tasha Yar they talk about seems way more interesting than the one we got.
Reunion: Picard covers up for Worf after he murders a Klingon chancellor.
I guess this was a decent episode but it seems like a shame to kill off Worf's girlfriend in her second appearance. Ah well Worf's a father now, which only makes him more attractive. Thankfully he also realizes that a starship is a terrible place to raise a child, so he sends him off to be raised by his parents.
Future Imperfect: We learn they have terrible birthday cakes in the future.
We also see a nightmarish future in which Picard has hair.
Final Mission: Wesley finally leaves! Another character Miles O'Brian has outlasted. At this rated he'll be the only character left.
It had some impressive location work. I think they dumped a shuttle in the desert and filmed there.
The Loss: Troi loses her powers. Now who will state the obvious?
It also seems to imply that Troi relied solely on her psychic powers and otherwise is not a very good counsellor.
You know the writers seem to have gotten better at writing Troi doing her job, but they seem to struggle with having her do stuff outside of that.
Data's Day: Miles O'Brian's fiancé breaks up with him and he accidently kills an ambassador (Seemingly. Thankfully all he did was help a spy escape).
The Wounded: An O'Brian episode? Fleshing out his backstory, his marriage and giving him a traumatic past? Tasha Yar would have killed for that.
Also, apparently for the past few years the Federation has been at war with the Cardassians for the past few years. So, if Picard ever talked about how Starfleet wasn't a military force in the first three seasons, he was a liar.
First Contact: Riker meets an alien fucker. Sadly, it's an exploitative alien fucker. All true alien fuckers respect life in it's many forms and understand the importance of consent.
Devil's Due: Picard turns into a shirtless monster.
Well, it seems like the Boba Fett show is actually going to meet its December release date. Obviously, it's going to be about him renovating Jabba's old palace and working to create a less hostile work environment. You know clear out the old dungeons, turn them into an employee break room with some comfy chairs and a ping pong table.
If you're like me and watch direct to DVD Scooby Doo films for the homoerotic subtext, Moon Monster Madness has a lot to offer. Daphne spends a lot of time with an astronaut lady. Hot damn. You know it's usually Velma who gets the lesbian subtext, so it's nice for them to branch out a bit.
Scooby Doo FrankenCreepy: Pros: Velma wears a neat evil dress. Cons: Fred says treasure correctly.

As for me, I’m treating my boys and it makes me broke. I already have some debt in the vet clinic, but I’m a volunteer there so they let me postpone the pay. My phone starts heating intensely in right bottom corner when I play a game. I feel anxious about it. The guy in the repair shop said it’s not worth repairing it. A friend gave me an old smartphone. I uploaded Love Nikki there, but since it’s so old, all my games won’t fit. I think I’ll delete Magia Record on my phone. Kinda shame, but it’s too hard on the mechanism. I just only got Homura :( But anyways, the story is better as an anime, and folks on Youtube still post the story sections of the game with subtitles.

Date: 2021-10-05 12:06 pm (UTC)a) was gory?
b) had any child deaths?
I'd like to watch it because I'M ALL OVER the trope where the monster and the human form a symbiotic partnership, but child deaths are a huge squick of mine (even the one in the first movie left a really bad taste in my mouth), and I have a very weak stomach for gore.

Date: 2021-10-05 01:05 pm (UTC)The final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character is getting announced today! I’m simultaneously hyped and dreading who that could be, I’ve given up making predictions two years ago. Hopefully Mr. Sakurai and the crew get some much needed time to rest now.
I don’t know about hidden gems per se, but Detention was decent (though that may have been because I played the game).

Date: 2021-10-05 02:26 pm (UTC)I'm not saying its impossible and I think the character would be a good fit but if I were Nintendo I doubt dealing with Disney lawyers would be worth it.
Still, I hope its someone of Sora's caliber. I've yet to purchase the second DLC pack because so far the fighters have been really underwhelming.

Date: 2021-10-05 01:57 pm (UTC)I don't know why I never really got in to the New Warriors. Maybe it is the aforementioned 'teenagers with attitude' thing they had going on that made me cringe.
Maybe it is because I find Night Thrasher to be laughable. The guy tried fighting Juggernaut with a skateboard. Then, when that didn't work he snapped and tried beating up Juggernaut himself. Thankfully, saner minds prevailed and Firestar pulled him away.
As for DC, I just read volume 2 of the Doug Moench/Kelley Jones run on Batman. I don't know what happened to volume 1. It wasn't available on Comixology. Any way, I quite enjoyed the horror-tinged Batman stories.
I am not sure how I will feel when I get around to revisiting Batman: Contagion what with the present climate. That being said, I did get a kick out of the story atc that was a reference to Masque of the Red Death, with the rich folks holed up in their swanky apartment block while the clench virus ravaged the rest of the city.

Date: 2021-10-05 02:23 pm (UTC)Heavily retooled from Airazor. Which is... an odd choice. But then, it was hardly going to be anyone else, was it?
Or to put it in a cruder way: Nuts to you, Tarantulas!
The recording machine actually managed to sort-of work for one day, on an actually plot relevant episode of Dino Fury.
... surprisingly heavy bit of backstory for Rangers, actually.
I mean, there's been dark backstories before, and we already knew from the get-go the original Dino Fury team was dead, but that's still pretty hardcore.
Followed by an alien of the week throwing Zayto's trauma at him as a test of character. Damn, dude!
(although, if it could scan his mind to pick up that trauma, surely it'd noticed he and the Gold Ranger were on the level?)
Had to do some weekend shopping at an Ikea.
Urrrgh. Now I get what The Good Place meant.
I dunno. Maybe it's because there was a massive global pandemic, but that confined a space with that many people crammed into it wandering like zombies...
Really unpleasant.
On a mad whim (possibly boredom), was thinking of getting Batman Earth One volume 3.
Then I saw what its version of Catwoman looks like.
Wow.
I mean, just... oh, jeez.
There was some news about that Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special thing have "the most important character" or some such.
It's going to turn out to be a joke character or the like.
(also, still upset over Guardians of the Galaxy the comic just suddenly ending.

I feel like the theme of this season of Lower Decks is that Boimler has outgrown Mariner. He’s out here outsmarting AIs and seducing the Borg Queen while she’s getting trampled by horses and breaking sex relics.

Date: 2021-10-05 04:30 pm (UTC)Watched the first and last Hostel movies with my bf and our best friend. Netflix doesn't have the second film so we couldn't watch it. The first movie isn't as entertaining as I remembered and has a lot more nudity than I remembered...which might be a good or a bad thing, depending on your tastes.
Third movie is just bad.
"Question of the week: Anyone got any "hidden gem" streaming shows to recommend?"
It's probably not so hidden but I'd recommend Anne with an E, a lovely adaptation of the Anne of Green Gables book series. It's probably the most wholesome, heartwarmng show I've ever watched, and it manages to bring in modern topics such as feminism, LGBTQ rights and racism in a very organic way, without feeling too overtly preachy.

And I mean any movie that has white supremacists getting their faces ripped off and being utterly slaughtered by a heroic vampire is a movie that's going on my top five list.
Honestly it's pretty much the perfect horror movie in my opinion. Giant sewer dwelling rat monsters, cyborg body horror mad science, the living dead, fascists getting their eyes ripped out...it's fun for the whole family. It's on Shudder right now so check it out. Even if you weren't a fan of the previous V/H/S films I think people who enjoy horror will like this one a whole lot
