Mod Post: Off Topic Tuesday
Nov. 2nd, 2021 09:04 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
So COP26 has launched in Glasgow as the great, the good and the powerful (though sadly those don't overlpa as much as one might like) attempt to address the global problem of climate change. My natural cynicism kicks in, but I'm trying to stay positive.
The more kid oriented (but not VERY kid oriented) Star Trek Prodigy launched, with some fun ideas, some creative aien designs and a genuinely impressive aesthetic.
The Book of Boba Fett trailer dropped.
Doctor Who: Flux, aka Season 13 got started with the first of its six part story. A lot of setting up of multiple threads in multiple times and places, but this looks like it could be a rollicking good ride, and I like Dan already. Also nice to see some properly NASTY Sontarans after their tendency to be used for comic relief. Even Dan "Strax" Starkey came abck to appear as a different, far less amusing, warrior.

Date: 2021-11-02 09:32 am (UTC)Times Arrow, Part II. Well, this had some good elements, but it left a lot be desired. I just want to see the main characters be sent back in time and have to start a band of travelling actors to make money and get into a military base. Is that too much to ask?
Realm of Fear: Barcley is revealed to have an entirely understandable fear of the transporter.
Man of The People: Another episode about Troi getting horribly violated. This is a very uncomfortable pattern.
Relics: Oh my God it's Scotty. Despite being Starfleet's greatest hero, they don't respect him enough, but he saves them all anyway. He departs on a shuttle, no doubt for a future full of heroism and adventure. I like to think he's still out there...
Schism: Riker is a real dick, who doesn't appreciate Data's poetry.
Impressively this plot manged to be both drawn out and rushed. Also, the villains are some lame looking fish monks.
True Q: Riker is saved from having a plastic barrel fall on his head.
Rascals: Picard and co are turned into children, then save the ship from Feregni. What....
They deal with the negative consequences for being turned into a child, especially how Ro's childhood was not fun.
A Fistful of Datas: Worf and Alexander go into the holodeck to have a cowboy adventure, unfortunately a virus causes the four gunmen of the apocalypse to appear.
You know, I would not have expected the cowboy adventure episode, to give Troi some personality but here we are.
The Chain of Command, Part I: Dr. Crusher rubs off a Frengi.
Starfleet sends a sixty-four-year-old with very limited experience to lead a black op raid on a hostile force.
They do establish that Picard is an expert in the technology their looking for, but surely, he could have briefed a commando team on what they were looking for. He's a high-ranking captain, with all sorts of valuable information. And you're sending in Dr. Crusher as well.
The Chain of Command Part II. A harrowing episode as the Cardassians try to break Picard.
Man, that was dark. Picard held out as long as he could, but inevitably he was broken by the horrors of torture.
So, Captain Jellico. On one hand he comes across as a micromanager , who alienates most of his crew. But he is able to foil the Cardassians plans.
Also, Troi is told to put on a proper uniform. That should have happened a long time ago.
I have started watching Moral Orel. Many years ago I had the opportunity to buy the complete DVD set of the show, but I foolishly squandered it....wait no I would have been too young for the guy to sell it to me. I feel so much better now.
The copy of the Starman Compendium I ordered has arrived. It's got some interesting stuff, but they speak very strangely. Who is this Chris Issak?
I've been playing some of Star Wars Squadrons. It kind of bugs me that they made the Empire so diverse. Oh well.
I was worried my RWBY volume 7 DVD didn't work, but then it started working again for no reason.

Date: 2021-11-02 06:42 pm (UTC)Scotty should be cherished!
He is a good hero
I choose to believe he is adventuring through the universe, getting into exploits of daring heroism
If the books contradict this canon no one tell me let me cling to my blissful ignorance
"Schism: Riker is a real dick, who doesn't appreciate Data's poetry."
"Be nice to Data" is something I often find myself saying
"So, Captain Jellico. On one hand he comes across as a micromanager , who alienates most of his crew. But he is able to foil the Cardassians plans."#
I swear I read that as Captain Jellicle at first and I had the most nightmarish mental image of my life
"The Chain of Command, Part I: Dr. Crusher rubs off a Frengi."
And she's still allowed to keep her post?
A double standard!
A friend of mine got banned from Comic-Con for public lewdness for that
"Man of The People: Another episode about Troi getting horribly violated. This is a very uncomfortable pattern."
Don't worry in future seasons Beverly Crusher will get horribly violated instead
By Scottish Candle Ghosts
On Planet Scotland
Planet medieval Scotland to be precise but it's possible that this is what the writers thought Scotland of the modern day was like
You're in for a treat when you get to that one
"The Chain of Command Part II. A harrowing episode as the Cardassians try to break Picard.

I get very upset by this episode when I first saw it :(

I now really want to see what Gillian Anderson's Baroness Croft would be up to. Lecturing? Book tours?

Date: 2021-11-02 10:20 am (UTC)While it doesn’t look like Sale’s art, I appreciate them changing things up from the style most DC animated movies use.
It was interesting that Two-Face’s coin got a better origin story than some superheroes that have been given whole movies.
Loved seeing tiny Babs. Wonder if we’ll get a Dark Victory adaptation so this version of the character can meet Dick.
Also appreciated the larger role for Selina.
Troy Baker’s Joker reminded me of Mark Hamill’s so much that I had to check the credits.
They really beat you over the head with the whole “this is an inexperienced Batman” thing.
I understand why you’d want to streamline this by making Holiday one person instead of two (possibly three) but I think they made things a little two obvious by narrowing the suspect pool too much. I don’t think some of the red herrings (like the Riddler) even show up.
Also, it’s a little weird that they’d drag this out into two parts and still skip holidays when the conceit of the series is each issue takes place on a different month. It sort of defeats the point. Can’t wait for the Superman for All Seasons adaption that skips Fall or the Fifty-Two adaptation that only covers every third week.
PS: One of the changes is downright baffling in light of Loeb’s alleged past anti-Asian comments. There’s really no narrative reason to have Holiday target the Chinese mob on Thanksgiving instead of the Irish mob.

Little to comment on with the Marvel trades I am reading, other than I will be revisiting Silver Age Avengers and Captain America. Also, I'm going to give the Clone Saga another go. Pray for me.
As for other comics, I am still enjoying sharing out of context Archie panels with folks on Discord. It's the simple things in life, really.

Date: 2021-11-02 10:37 am (UTC)The bill banning public displays of pro-queer sentiments passed the first reading. It will go to a comission and then return to the parliament with possible changes made, where it will be voted on again. More on the bill in this post: https://kotara.tumblr.com/post/666230515393757184/tomorrow-evening-28102021-r-the-first-sejm As for what we can do, there’s not much. The government doesn’t listen to its people at all and has enough members of the parliament to do as it pleases, and the judicary system fully in its pockets will accept every bill. However, we can help individual queer people and orgs in Poland. More on it here: https://fircyk.tumblr.com/post/661610215055278080/support-polish-lgbtq-teens
People keep dying on Polish-Belarusian borders. You can read articles by large English language newspapers on what is going on:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/oct/31/poland-belarus-border-migrants-deaths
https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20211029-poland-mps-approve-belarus-border-wall-amid-tensions-with-eu-over-migrants

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/10/10/europe/poland-belarus-border-crossing-migrants-record-number-intl/index.html
I knew of a few crowdfunding campaigns helping the refugees, but all ended already.
Finally, new history textbook for high schools in Poland will be written by a guy who fantasised online about mass executions of leftists in Poland. Cool.
Please refrain of general antipolonist comments. I’ve met with far too many such reactions from Western readers.
I’ll try to add something positive. This month I’ve read:
-Nubia and the Amazons, which does the best job any writer since Perez has done on worldbuilding the Amazonian society and introduces a few modern women reincarnated as Amazon, including first transgender Amazon
-Wonder Girl, which was kinda meh both plot and art wise
-Green Lantern, which is a decent story that gets a massive bonus for me for utilizing my favourite Lanterns (John! Jessica! Simon! KELI! JO!!!! YELLOW LANTERN JESSICA!!!!!!!)
-Robin, which is very much a manga and features amazing characters both old and new (Damian! Rose! CONNOR! And the awesome newcomer Flatline!)
-Inferno, which reintroduced one of my favourite villainesses in a story I’ve been waiting for my whole fannish career
-Phoenix Song, which was meh, plus it follows some developments I didn’t like for Echo
Overall, it was a pretty good month in comics, though I wonder what this selection tells about myself. As for anime, I am watching Yuuki Yuuna and Muv Luv, two series I talked about last week. I also need to finish Moriarty the Patriot and Modaozushi, the second series apparently having a very good last season. I packed a whole container full of BL and GL manga I don’t feel like rereading. I plan on donating them to my local queer org once it reopens.

In real life (!) rolled out a Halloween special for my podcast at short notice as I was oddly inspired for once, and more importantly got the fourth issue this year of my academic journal published. Which was a weight off my mind: although trying not to remind myself I'm teaching an academic writing workshop in two weeks which I've not started writing yet...

I can forgive a lot of things (delays, lost packages, selling items that are out of stock, etc etc... Whatever, those are accidents and everybody can make a mistake), but the refusal to talk with the person who is going to give you money makes me genuinely angry and it's an instant blacklist for me, the only reason I've ever left negative feedback.

Date: 2021-11-02 10:37 pm (UTC)I have had so many orders lost in the last couple months and I must have wasted nearly two hours dealing with customer service.
I swear they hire someone to stomp on the packages that they do actually deliver.
(And that isn’t even taking into account how little effort they put in to policing some of the scammers posing as third party sellers)
Meanwhile I recently got some trades from Barnes and Noble that I couldn’t find elsewhere. They shipped for free and I got them within a few days (which is faster than “Two Day” Prime shipping usually is). They came in cardboard rather than the flimsy bubble wrap sleeves Amazon normally uses for small orders.
I order most of my physical comic collections from In Stock Trades. While their shipping became extremely slow when the pandemic hit, they’re very good about packaging shipments well, almost always have a better discount than Amazon, and have had great customer service on the rare occasions that something has gone wrong.

Date: 2021-11-02 05:12 pm (UTC)Loved seeing classic series style Sontarans and the new villains have a fun creepy look to them. I hope the Weeping Angels are used well here too
The outerspace dog was so cute
Grumpy talking warrior dog. I think he should get to meet Cosmo and have an adventure
Thirteen and Yaz have so much cute wife-y energy in this story
Dan seems like a fun addition to the cast! Apparently his actor is normally known for stand up comedy roles so I was pleasingly surprised that he was also a good actor here
Did anyone else think the new aliens are very Cenobite-y
I am curious just how everything will fit together, what the Flux is and how it might be stopped and what further secrets we shall learn of the Doctor's past here
Seems like the "Big Bad" for this story is someone who the Doctor encountered in their missing years working for the Celestial Intervention Agency....I mean um "The Division"...
That or they're from the Doctor's future and this is a serious take on the minor villain from Hitchikers Guide who tried to kill Arthur Dent for something he'd done in his future

Impressed that Flux actually gave Yasmin something to do. Like, an actual proper thing to do! Yaaay!
I am a little baffled by the fact they've gone all retro with the Sontaran looks. Is it because they lost the old costumes and makeup or is it just change for change's sake? Either way. Weird.
That actually was Starkey, was it? Couldn't tell with the credits being all squished up.
I think it was a relatively strong start, though the plot did jump around a lot.
But hey, Sontarans. Being a threat. I'm sold.
The other week, saw there was a thing about the Windrush Generation on CBBC.
Which is... not where I would've expected it.
Apparently Hasbro put an embargo on the writer of Beast Wars to not use one specific character for whatever reason.
It was probably Airazor, because we just got Blackarachnia, and the letters page promised Airazor and who else would it be?
So instead we gots Razorbeast. (I mean, yay Razorbeast, but I wuz expecting Airazor, dammit!)
Figuring this also has something to do with that movie, and Hasbro being a bunch of completely nutso mother hens sometimes.
(Pretty sure the casual viewer can tell different between two different versions of a character, especially in this day and age.)
Finished another go-round on that Mass Effect. This time, tried for Liara.
... eh.
I prefer Samantha.
Nintendo (or Game Freak, whichever) released a look at a new form of Zorua last week.
Adorable. WANT.
(All the more annoyed the game's no coming out 'till January...)
There's apparently an Epic Collection of Killraven coming out this week. I might buy it, because it sounds like nonsense, and I'm in medical need of nonsense right now.
Today at work, got to do sketchin' and colouring in.
... okay, they don't call it that, they use more sophisticated terms whose names currently elude me, but... when you're using coloured pencils to fill in bits of a map... sorry, "plan"...
Not the best day ever otherwise.
The last week or so, the dog has been... well, she's not been well this whole year. Loss of bladder control, legs going out, irregular sleeping patterns, occasionally being off her chuck, or indeed anyone's chuck, general state of what we call "wombled", not having any idea where she is or what she's doing.
But the last week she's really deteriorated, spending her time either just asleep, or when she's awake wandering around in tiny circles, and she's just not eating at all.
So the general reluctant consensus is that it's... probably time.
Which, to use the technical term, fucking sucks.
You don't want them to suffer, or to linger, but at the same time don't want them to go, or feel like you're giving up on them too soon.
Even though last time she was at the vets they said she was in good condition for a dog her age, all things considered.
Even though there's not anything left you can do, and you've already done everything it's possible to do.
It still sucks.
no subject
Date: 2021-11-02 06:03 pm (UTC)Mozart is going the same way right now. The circles are apparently because he can't see anymore and that's leading to him not having a normal sleep schedule and he keeps waking me up at night. I've been told by other old dog owners that there might still be medication that can help him but I'm frankly dreading that I might need to make that decision.

I'm not a huge fan of the show, but I did a double-take when I found out a certain person voiced the extremely sexually explicit Asmodeus, ruler of Lust - James M. Inglehart, who I mostly know from Disney productions such as Aladdin (broadway), Tangled (Animated Series) and Ducktales 2017. Not to mention I literally met this man face to face last month at NYCC - so yeah, hearing that voice from that character while mentally seeing that face? It's enough mood whiplash I might need a neckbrace.
