"This story has lived in the back of my brain for over a decade now but I couldn't find the outlet for it before AWA. I loved the idea of someone accidentally killing the primary superhero of a city — and then having to fill those shoes. A number of questions circled me as I first set pen to paper. What if the original superhero — effective as he may have been — was an asshole? What if our protagonist was pure of heart but much too meek for his own good? What would he have to learn about himself, his hidden reserves of power, were he to assume the role? And what parts of him might be liberated when he puts on that mask? I was inspired by classic Lee-Ditko Spiderman, the two years I spent writing Batman for DC, and Millar-Romita Jr's Kick-Ass. Getting the right blend of humor and action, irreverence and suspense was important to me. Most of all, I wanted it to be playful."

No one objected to the trash can fire right by the hospital entrance? Those homeless people didn't hear the screeching pipe or the splattering superhero?

That is an improbable number of women changing in front of a window in one place. Do any of the women at this hospital ever object to the massive windows in their double-decker changing room that leave them clearly visible from ground level? Why was not!Batman even elevated when everything is fully visible from ground level?

I'm nitpicking, but what else is there to do? The creators have so little faith their audience will grasp the subtle references they made not!Lucius Fox just be Morgan Freeman.

I'm guessing they have combined the two characters here

I'd say he's both. Morgan Freeman standing in front of a giant screen of illegal surveillance seems too direct a reference to be anything but deliberate.

So basically: "What if Clark Kent accidentally killed Batman and Alfred blackmailed him into taking over the role"

This looks like it could be pretty funny

I might give it a look see

" I was inspired to riff on superheroes, but not enough to come up with anything that didn't rely on the reader's recognition of aspects of popular intellectual properties.

" I mean, I'm pretty sure if I do that with a superhero character and try to sell it in the direct market, Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson'll be coming after me with baseball bats.. "

This is one of those interesting concepts that just completely fails on the execution.

Doing an asshole Batman expy that gets the Santa Claused treatment could be a fun little jaunt but there are so many nonsensical little moments that turn it into bad comedy.

It sounds like it's going the way of, "You don't need to be driven by a single defining tragedy to devote your life to becoming the world's greatest vigilante, you just need to be rich"

And was the line just tied on with a simple knot? No grapnel or anything? So the vigilante tied a line there by hand? It seems to be above head height as well, so the protagonist must have jumped to reach his arm out for it like that?

I was going to suggest maybe the hero was superstrong and super-heavy, but he's a Batman expy, not a Superman expy, so that doesn't work.

This is exactly what I'd expect from a European comic doing this but and the fact that the writer is American feels embarassing.
