The concept of overpopulation means a lot less when you realize there's roughly 39,000 golf courses in the world and each averages 150 acres. That mean 58.5 million acres of land is dedicated to a sport played mostly by the wealthy.

Breaking that down, that's 91,406.25 square miles of land. That's more land than the whole of New York State.

I think that most discussions of overpopulation boil down to the privileged figuring it'd be easier for them personally if all of the poor people just died, so that the rich don't have to give up any space or resources.

Of course, here the overpopulation talking point is coming from an emotionally damaged former anti-abortion zealot and the personification of a biblical plague, so it's not like this is Professor Genius Q. Reliable warning about the dangers of overpopulation.

It's amusingly ironic to me that pro lifers and the drivel they spout just make me think we need MORE abortions to reduce the risk of dribbling morons like this being born

Looks like a pretty good take on " ancient being nonplussed by modernity ", but also like one that falls into " So he's lived for how long, and this is the first time he's had to think about things like this? Really? "

Yeah, this book seems to be oddly trying to play both "these figures are manifestations of their namesake disasters as they've occurred throughout history," and "these are ancient beings that haven't been abroad for thousands of years."

I always find it so funny when characters that are old as dirt don't like the modern world

"I miss the good old days when we were shitting in the streets and a slight cut on your hand meant you were as good as dead"

There's a vague point of reference there. Every generation complains, to some degree, about the generation that comes next and what the world is like. Nostalgia is powerful. Cars (the Pixar movie) is an entire movie about how people don't slow down long enough to appreciate things because the US adopted the interstate highway system.

One generation said the young people spent too much time watching TV and not enough time doing stuff.

Now that generation of TV watchers is saying young people spend too much time on their phones and not enough time doing stuff.

It isn't a big leap to bring that behavior and idea into the concept of truly ancient beings being upset. People of privilege often don't realize how horrible their past was for the rest of humanity. And immortality is absolutely a privilege.
