"To a degree, it is a throwback comic book, like the kind that I grew up with, having powers and going on adventures. It's not going to be maudlin nor particularly dark. It's going to be fun and exciting and Doctor Who-y." - Jeremy Adams
I honestly have no idea how old Wally's kids are supposed to be anymore. I know super-speed shenanigans were involved at some point so they're... 8? maybe? But that's with some fast-forward action? And the art here doesn't help much either.
Foolish mortal, trying to make sense of a comic character's age!
(If we were going by simple chronology - pfft - they'd be mid-teens, even with aging and de-aging and the like. But no, that'd be too simple...
On the plus side, if the writers don't think they're teenagers, they'll be less likely to do something stupidly horrific / horrifically stupid to them. Safety in confusion!)
2. One of the reasons why Hal and Barry came back to replace Kyle and Wally was the writers who were writing them had grown up with Hal as their GL and Barry as their Flash. The idea we're now getting writers who grew up with Kyle and Wally as their GL and Flash is absolutely delicious.
This book has been a lot of fun so far. It's always a welcome change of pace to see superhero books where the heroes actually seem to be having fun doing what they do instead of it being all DARKNESS NO PAAAARREEENNNTTTTSSSS
On that second point, it is what made the whole decision to backtrack back then so bizarre as this was naturally consequence of it. Once they made a decision completely based on what they read as a kid, it set up that as the justification for future writers as well.
I still can't understand what they thought would happen.
I have trouble believing that DiDio ever thought about the consequences or long-term effects of bringing back Hal or Barry, beyond "this'll create a huge spike in sales this year!"
"It's not going to be maudlin nor particularly dark. It's going to be fun and exciting and Doctor Who-y.""
OH THANK GOD. This appears to be DELIGHTFUL and I fully endorse it. Having 'protective superhero dad' Wally seems like such a great evolution of him and his family and I am here for it. I like seeing stories without huge world-bending consequences from time to time.
" I'm making comics like how I remember them as a kid - not ' maudlin ' or ' dark ' or ' new ' or anything uncomfortable like that. "
(Adams' writing looks perfectly fine, but please - in 2021, if you're selling a work-for-hire story about an existing character for $3.99 per issue, try to give interview quotes that aren't " Do you have grievances about how this character's been handled in the immediate past? Worry not - I'm providing counter to them! ")
