Mod Post - Review of the Year Part 1
Dec. 30th, 2021 02:06 pmWell, 2021 might have been lacking a lot of things that we might normally expect in a year, but it did have some fine comics
So this is your chance to share your favourites from the past 12 months
We'll split it up into three topics
New Years Eve Eve (today) - Favourite series in 2021
New Years Eve - Favourite character in 2021
New Years Day - Favourite moment of 2021
So for today, what has been your favourite series in 2021?
Now it could be a comic, a graphic novel, a webcomic, and either a new title or a relaunch.
Was it because of a creator? A storyline? The characters?
Personally, I have rather enjoyed to more than a little fan-service-y but I'm too tired of grim takes to see that as an issue, Wayne Family Adventures, a surprise hit on WebToons which just takes a more domestic look at tired dad Bruce Wayne and his seemingly infinite number of kids.
And the Tom Taylor/Bruno Redondo Nightwing run has been both a refreshing return to heroics after the "Ric Grayson" debacle (IMHO) and just gorgeous too look at, not least of all because of the Jamal Campbell covers which are just... WOW!

Date: 2021-12-30 03:00 pm (UTC)Fave Marvel series: Way of X by Si Spurrier and R Quinn
Fave indie series: Stray Dogs by T Fleecs and T Forstner
Fave graphic novel: Poison Ivy:Thorns by K Kiplinger and S Kipin
All these series featured unusual depth of storytelling and are visually striking.
As for manga, I've read too many good stories this year to choose one title. Can provide recs in almost any genre.

Date: 2021-12-30 04:59 pm (UTC)*Coda by Simon Spurrier and Matias Bergara.
*Way of X by Simon Spurrier and Bob Quinn
Yeah, I'm enjoying a lot Spurrier's storytelling. The fact that WoX made more use of the X-kids than any other X-series (except maybe X-Factor) helped
Manga
*The Witch and the Beast by Kousuke Satake: the adventures of a magician and a bruiser tasked to solve witch related crimes. Awesome art!
*Dandadan by Yukinobu Tatsu: a nerd who doesn't believe in spirits and a popular girl who doesn't believe in alien are both proven wrong for the best and for the worst. Great humour and wholesome interactions.
*Also got back to read Magical Task Force Asuka and Lost Children, and enjoying the hell out of it.

Date: 2022-01-01 08:51 am (UTC)Kinda disappointed she managed to escape, as she was not so entertaining. So far, the best antagonists either died or joined the protags.

Date: 2021-12-30 05:45 pm (UTC)MARVEL
Eternals, by Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic
Defenders, by Al Ewing and Javier Rodriguez
Strange Academy, by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos
Moon Knight, by Jed McKay and Alessandro Capuccio
DC
Arkham City: the Order of the World, by Dan Watters and Dani
Action Comics, by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Miguel Mendonça
Superman and the Authority, by Grant Morrison and Mikel Janin
Suicide Squad, by Robbie Thompson and Eduardo Pansica
I'll also leave two honrable mentions, both written by Vita Ayala: Nubia and the Amazons, at DC, and New Mutants at Marvel. They're not as good as the above, imo (Ayala's execution is their weak spot), but are generally well-conceived and offer entertaining stories.
