So we're nearing or, in some timezones, past the dawn of 2022.

So today's topic is:

Favourite character in 2021

Is it a new character, or an old one who has finally caught your eye, or has something changed about them that has made you reassess them?

And as we're heading towards the New Year, on behalf of the Mod Team, we thank you for your contributions to the community over the past year, for the debates, the discussions, the discoveries, the reveals and the general cameraderie you've brought. And we look forward to more in a hopefully LESS complicated year in 2022!

I have never particularly cared for Moon Knight, but the latest series by Jed MacKay has actually got me interested in the character.

Joe Fixit, The Cosmic Hulk.

It's sad to think that the run of Immortal Hulk is tainted forever by association with its' artist - and that the tremendous amount of growth (both emotional and physical) that Joe went through is very likely to be cast aside by subsequent writers - but for this year, it was a pleasure to see him become the big brother that Bruce (and 'Big Guy') needed.

I realized that I couldn't name a single character, even among my usual faves, that made me really ecstatic.
So I'll nominate Nanny, Fabian Cortez and Amahl Farouk. The last two got unexpected development and Nanny confirmed herself as one of the best X-Men villains.

Definitely Jo Mullein. She was introduced in 2019, I think, but her initial story arc only ended this year. Her Green Lantern costume is visually distinct, definitely fave Corps design, and I love that her story actually shows her investigating a murder mystery. I didn't like the story never questioning her past as a willing member of an invading army of a certain colonial empire, but you cannot have everybody. As for new and returning characters in 2021 specifically, I loved that the Robin series reintroduced Connor Hawke and introduced an interesting new character in Flatline.

I don't trust any writer with her who's not NK Jemisen, but yes, her design is gorgeous.

Love that "Far Sector" ended with the thought "so much blackness...so beautiful."

I’m not sure if these count, but I surprisingly liked the new cast introduced in Tynion’s Batman quite a lot.

Not so much a new take as a return to an old one. Mister E made an appearance as a guest character driving the story in the Justice League Dark annual, and he really felt like the character from Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic, far more so than his subsequent appearances in his own miniseries, The Trenchcoat Brigade, and the New 52 Constantine.
