Okay, so Ewing's explanation of the Beyond Corporation is that events of "Nextwave" was basically a prank the Corporation was playing on them. They wanted Nextwave to turn on HATE as part of their game.
My theory is that Maxine is being obviously evil because they want Ben to do the same thing. She didn't even try to act convincing there. Unfortunately, Ben apparently didn't inherit Peter's brains. They're probably frustrated he's not taking the bait.

Everyone knows the corpos are inherently evil anyway, so a few armed goons and an eccentric dress sense are nothing to look twice at.

At first, Otto claimed he only called it a device, but Tony said he explicitly stated it was a bomb at a couple of points. "I lied," was the "ingenious" response.
Seriously though, something is wrong with Ben. His memory is failing him and he seems easily confused.
