Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Feb. 1st, 2022 11:23 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The UK Government was well... being the current UK Government as an internal report slammed the conduct of those at 10 Downing Street. But it was only a partial report as other cases are currently under investigation by the police. Criticism of Prime Minister Boris Johnson ranged from the angry and wordy (Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer) to brief but withering (Former PM and fellow Conservative Theresa May, who loathes Johnson more than Starmer does)
In an apparent effort to seem like even more of a James Bond villain than usual, one of Elon Musk's rockets will crash into the surface of the moon.
The New York Times has bought Wordle
The Book of Boba Fett managed to spend most of an episode of it's already COVID shortened run not dealing with Boba Fett at all, but another fan-favourite, character, which seemed like an odd choice, but was a good episode in it's own right.
Wooden Overcoats continues it's fourth season, and is amazing.

Date: 2022-02-01 12:10 pm (UTC)Last week, I did something both morally abhorrent and extremely stupid, by making a post using an anti-mutant slur and expressing the hope that the mutants of the Marvel universe would be subjected to a genocide. These are not my actual beliefs, though I doubt anyone cares about that. I did this with the full expectation that my actions would result in my banning, as I have already received two warnings and this surely deserved a third. My only defense, expressed by a private message to one of the moderators, was that what I had done was not different in kind than what had been done by another poster on these forums. This was bullshit and I knew it, but I hoped that putting this out there would result in some sort of sanctions against that poster as well as myself.
Instead, after that section of that post's comments was frozen, NOTHING HAPPENED. I did not understand this. After seeing a post from that user being censured for using pirated images, I came to the conclusion that the moderators were never going to do anything about their activities on any level other than the procedural. This is irresponsible moderation, so I am left with only one option.
I am leaving this board, as soon as I have finished making this post, and I will never return.
There is a lot that I could say about the situation that has led to this, but I'm sure that my thoughts on the subject are of no interest to anyone but myself. Suffice it to say that protagonist-centered morality is disgusting regardless of who the protagonists are.
To anyone whom I have inadvertently hurt with my inconsiderate and ill-chosen words, I offer my sincere apologies. I would like to single out history69, who has recently demonstrated that they are not a robot, and whom I rather cruelly described in that manner. I regret this, and regret that you don't participate in discussion here, even as I realize that my actions have discouraged that. I hope my absence will encourage it.
To anyone whom I have deliberately hurt, well, you are getting what you wanted and I hope you choke on it. I am honestly glad that I am dying and will not see what else you make of this shithole of a world in the years to come.
In conclusion, trans rights are human rights, BLM, likewise Asian and Pacific Islanders, ACAB, virtue signaling is sad but still better than vice demonstrating, and, in the words of someone whose works I'm not interesting in reading but whose philosophy has much to recommend it, "Love is real."
I doubt you’ll see this, but…
Date: 2022-02-01 02:04 pm (UTC)I’d be lying if I said it was always pleasant (especially that last comment, the fudge bro?), but I was always curious to read what you had to say and that’s always sad to see someone leave for whatever reason. I’m sorry to hear about your condition; hope you get well soon, and if you don’t then I hope you have a good life and I wish you luck in your future endeavours. I’m sorry if you felt unwelcome here towards the end. If you ever change your mind, we’ll hopefully be right here for you.

Date: 2022-02-01 12:15 pm (UTC)The first ep was a little bit of a turnoff because the group was so crass (I dislike that 'grownup' animation means '13 year old crude' . I've seen animation 'for kids' that deals with more maturity.). But after that, while the characters have their own off-topic style, they get more heroic.
Also, is the animation from Powerhouse? The art is damn slick.

Date: 2022-02-01 12:22 pm (UTC)I have a little more patience for LoVM's edgy nonsense than I usually do for that sort of thing because they come by it more honestly. It hits a bit more viscerally when animated then when it's just a bunch of people sitting around a table leavening the tension with dick jokes, but there's little there that wouldn't feel fairly natural if one of the Critical Role players mentioned it at the table- although I also think you're right, and that was meant to start us at them as screw-ups so we could see them become heroes.

Date: 2022-02-01 12:16 pm (UTC)Over at my blog, something a bit special. Back in the early 80s I went to a showing of Heavy Metal at the Defense Language Institute movie theater in Monterey, CA. One of the previews stuck with me, but I never saw the movie and over the years forgot the title and star name. I finally thought to ask around, found a streaming copy of Firecracker, and watched it: http://www.skjam.com/2022/01/29/movie-review-firecracker-1981/

Yeah, after working from home for nearly two years, I think a lot about the "perks" they gave us at the office like the food they were always bringing in, the beverages, or the various gaming tables (pool, ping pong, ect). I would have rather had a raise even back when I could access that stuff.
I do miss having a decent office chair, though.

Date: 2022-02-01 12:24 pm (UTC)I missed the boat on the Wordle fad but, since the New York Times is taking it over, I figure its only a matter of time before its behind a paywall.
Looks like the annual Netflix price hike is about to make it even more expensive than the obscenely priced HBO Max. Thinking about cancelling but we’re finally going to get some more episodes of Disenchanted this month. Maybe I’ll only subscribe every other month like I do with Prime. I mean, if I can wait a month to watch the rest of the Critical Role* cartoon then I can wait a few extra weeks when/if The Dragon Prince ever comes back.
*I feel pretty bad for the Kickstarter backers who didn’t know they were financing a project to help make Jeff Bezos even richer and have nothing to show for it.
(Speaking of Amazon, they must have hired a new delivery person because only one of my four orders got delivered to the wrong person last week)
I’m watching Doctor Who series 12 and I find myself wondering if I may have found a general population even dumber than the people of the Marvel Universe. How many times do you have to be invaded before you stop being surprised that aliens exist? How many people need to die before unarmed civilians stop antagonizing the robots or trash cans or whatever showed up that week? Sure, the companions tend to come to bad ends anyway but I still can’t shake the feeling that the Doctor is selecting from the rare bystanders with a basic sense of self-preservation.
(Or not. I guess following the erratic stranger to a second location isn’t the best call.)
Dragonball Evolution is terrible and mostly unrecognizable as a Dragonball story but at least its often terrible in entertaining* ways. That puts it ahead of some of the early DBZ movies that are just boring.
*The scene where Goku sees Chi Chi at her desk in class and imagines her (and her desk) in a flowery field is hilarious while also showing that the writers have zero understanding of what Goku is about as a character.
As a palate cleanser I watched a couple classic movies I hadn’t seen before.
I spent a lot of Guys and Dolls going “oh, THAT’S where that song came from” but I’ve seen so many things that stole plot points from it (or possibly earlier movies) that the story didn’t grab me.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum OTOH is great thanks largely to Zero Mostel. It’s a real shame that the Hollywood Blacklist hampered his career so much. I should rewatch his Muppet Show episode.
Also, I should finish the Muppet Show.
Strange Academy is very good. Thankfully its more Owl House than Harry Potter. Possible spoiler for the first 12 issues below (ROT13).

I’ve been rereading the 2001 Green Arrow series. When I was reading it monthly, I dipped out around One Year Later but hopefully I make to the Black Canary team-up series this time.
I’ve mentioned before that I don’t really care for Kevin Smith’s Marvel work; I liked his Daredevil as an entry point the first time around but it’s a lot less enjoyable now that I’ve read what came before. I don’t have that problem with his GA. Its also a significantly better “Rebirth” comic than Green Lantern Rebirth because it doesn’t automatically absolve Ollie of every bad thing he’s ever done. Plus, it doesn’t completely sideline Conner like Hal and Barry’s returns did to Kyle and Wally. Its so much better to watch a writer build on what came before instead of just tearing it apart.
Speaking of Conner, I may hate Identity Crisis with a passion but at least Brad Meltzer did the “hero did a terrible thing” retcon well here with Ollie.
I wish I saw Scott Beatty’s name more often than the occasional fill-in. The Batfamily Year One stories are the only other thing that immediately springs to mind for me when I see the name. Oh well, I know he’s at least coming back for the Arrow Car issue later.
I really can’t wrap my head around why they didn’t have Judd write both halves of the GL/GA crossover when he was the outgoing GL writer and the incoming GA writer. Having Ben Raab pop in for a few issues just for this story before taking over GL was certainly a choice. It feels like it should have been one or the other. Maybe the story was meant as an interview for one or both of them? I hope not because – while I guess they got the job – this isn’t showing either at their best and it has brought my reading to a screeching halt.
(Honestly, I’m tempted to do a Winick GL reread now but then I KNOW I won’t finish his GA)
I haven’t made it to Judd Winick yet on this readthrough. I know he can also be a fairly divisive writer but I liked a lot of what he was doing in this era (GL, Exiles, Outsiders, and Barry Ween). A lot of the things I remember his run getting criticism for is already present in the series before he started.
I’m also really loving the consistency that Phil Hester’s art brings as the comic keeps changing writers early on.
PS: It just hit me that the GA&BC series ends with the double whammy of Blackest Night and Cry for Justice. Maybe I don’t need to reread the WHOLE series.

Date: 2022-02-01 01:11 pm (UTC)In other comics news, I have also read Injustice: Year 4. I wasn't particularly invested in superman fighting the Greek gods, but I did like the annual with Plastic Man. I especially liked how the annual was playing up up to be an actual threat to the Regime instead of just being the silly stretchy man.
In Marvel news, I have been reading the post-Secret Wars Spider-Woman series. Jess ends up at a space hospital with a bunch of pregnant aliens just as Skrulls attack. I was particularly bemused by there being an Awesome Android in the background that was also in the family way. Do I really want to know how an Awesome Android can get pregnant.
All the baby stuff did hit home, because of family stuff that I don't want to explain further.
I have also been reading the Shatterstar series from a year or so ago. Nothing really to report there, only that Pug-Smasher is my new favourite.
My usual subscriptions are a bit slim this week, so it looks like I am going back to some old back issues. I have the kid who collects Spider-Man issue coming up.
I am also making my way through Bill Mantlo's Incredible Hulk. The Hulk is presently going on a world tour meeting various native superheroes. At the moment he is in Russia, so that means meeting their local heroes.
My highlight of the previous issue being Crimson Dynamo meeting Ursa Major for the first time. He starts bullying the seemingly normal soldier, but then it becomes a case of 'OH GOD HE'S A BEAR!!'
As for DC, I am making my way through the Exiled arc of Superman where he exiles himself into space because he thinks he can't be trusted around the puny humans. There's also a subplot about rhe pocket universe Supergirl or something.

"I am also making my way through Bill Mantlo's Incredible Hulk. The Hulk is presently going on a world tour meeting various native superheroes. At the moment he is in Russia, so that means meeting their local heroes."
That sounds like fun!
I like when writers introduce heroes from countries all over the world and not just America and Britain
"My highlight of the previous issue being Crimson Dynamo meeting Ursa Major for the first time. He starts bullying the seemingly normal soldier, but then it becomes a case of 'OH GOD HE'S A BEAR!!'"
EXIT PURSUED BY BEAR
"As for DC, I am making my way through the Exiled arc of Superman where he exiles himself into space because he thinks he can't be trusted around the puny humans. There's also a subplot about rhe pocket universe Supergirl or something."
Oh that's going to become a whole thing later on in the comics trust me
That's going to lead to big stuff

Date: 2022-02-01 01:14 pm (UTC)After several weeks of "the PM should resign if he's found out to have been lying", the PM was... found to have been lying.
And suddenly there was a lot of "ooooh, 'resign' is such a strong word..."
[long string of really angry swearing]
Also, uh, apparently there were riots in Swansea last year.
Now, uh... it is said that certain parts of British media (THE BEEB) tend to be focused on certain parts of Britain (MEANING LONDON) and not much else, but... this is the first I'd actually heard of any riots in Swansea.
How do you miss an entire riot?
Right, real world stuff over. Bank to blanketing self in blissful denial.
This week on The Ma-... no, wait, it's still the Book of Boba. Huh.
...
Oofft. That flashback.
I definitely liked the TPM references. It's now the time for the prequels to get all the gratuitous homages! NYA-HA-HA-HA!
Though how's he supposed to carry bounties around in that thing, unless he chops 'em up real small?
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is out.
And apparently selling like hot cakes.
To avoid any usage of overblown hyperbole... it's good.
It's very good.
Though since the last 'mon I was at was Black and White 2, the change in game mechanics is a learning curve. (You get experience for catching them now?! What?!)
Fair warning: Hisuian Electrode is a bastard.
Inspired by some recent posts, been re-reading some of the old Archie Sonics.
Hard going because this mysterious sense of melancholy keeps kicking in.
(Also, thanks to the local's incompetence and bizarre business practices, missing the last issue of the Dark Gaia arc. *sigh*.
But I'm guessing it all worked out fine.)
Minor thing: Re-reading the arc with Silver fighting Dark Enerjak, noticing all the Prelates have sound effects where their laser beams sound out like their names (so, Vector goes "VEKT").
That's messed up... and definitely not funny.
Some lads got called around to sort out some large bits of tree which've been sitting around the garden now for... err... several years now.
From the sound of it, they managed to get through two saws already.

Date: 2022-02-01 01:44 pm (UTC)Loved seeing Din show up again in Book of Boba Fett this week. I am enjoying the Shared Expanded Universe that the Star Wars shows are creating here :)
Apparently Jessica Jones will be returning to the MCU but Krysten Ritter will not. Feels a little mean spirited to re-cast unless it's because she didn't want to/wasn't able to return to the role in which case fair enough. They were happy to bring back the original actor who played Kingpin in the Netflix show so maybe it is just that Ritter wasn't available
Moon Knight's trailer looks pretty cool!
Excited to go see Death on the Nile soon. I love me some Gal Gadot and some murder mystery
Very glad that Eternals and Shang Chi are on Disney + I have been loving getting to re-watch those.
Catwoman: Hunted comes out soon and it looks like it'll be my favorite DC animated feature so far. I'm planning to watch it as soon as it's avalable and enjoy just how queer as hell Selina and Kate are together

I liked Thunderball a little more than Goldfinger. Fiona Volpe is a great evil Bond girl
The podcast Immunities wrapped up today. It’s a pretty great reimagining of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers and I recommend y’all try it out
Wooden Overcoats does remain wonderful
Season 2 of Dungeons and Daddies just started. They’ve homeruled a number of things to still use Dungeons and Dragons but without actually using Dungeons and Dragons. It’s their show, they can do what they like, but I think that they probably could’ve found another system to do what they want

Date: 2022-02-01 09:06 pm (UTC)I'm pretty sure it's propaganda for the corporatization of the internet and the Disney corporation.
Also, the third act was sloppily constructed. All in all, it's the perfect gift to show you hate someone.
I'm still trying to scan Hench, but it's been slow-going. I keep on saving the images as PDF's which are very annoying to edit. Additionally, the scanner is shorter than the pages, so I have to scan each page in chunks and edit them together. But I keep scanning them unevenly, so some parts don't align correctly.
I decided I wanted to read Supreme. (Yes, the Alan Moore stuff, what other Supreme run would be worth reading?) It turns out another library has the first volume of it, and interlibrary loans are a thing that exists. So I can either pay the library system $11 to ship it over for two weeks, or give a guy on ebay $120 (at least).
Man, computers are getting worse. I don't like how I can only save with the snipping tool, if it's full extended.
Hooray my story is done. I've had 500 hits.

On Brazilian news, we lost long-time voice actor Isaac Bardavid, who voiced Wolverine (both the version from the '92 cartoon and rhe Hugh Jackman version), Skeletor, plus a lot of other cool characters. He was 91 years old and looked like a fun grandad. A big loss for the Brazilian voice acting community, which already lost many of its artists last year.

Date: 2022-02-02 01:50 am (UTC)I finished reading all of Frank Herbert's Dune books, no plans to read his son's sequels. They're pretty good and for all of their influence, still so unique and odd compared to what followed them. The last two books, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune feel completely inessential and because of Herbert's death their story feels unfinished and unsatisfying. You spend like 900 pages with a bunch of horrible autocrats trying to justify their own existence and doing increasingly terrible things, often to children, and then there's never any real payoff to it. I think Dune Messiah was my favourite of the books though, it's relatively slim compared to the other books, and has the most interesting premise, "What happens after The Hero wins the kingdom?"

Date: 2022-02-02 08:47 am (UTC)Some Texas Rep decided to make himself seem important and busy and wrote up a random ass list of books to remove from school libraries. Most people ignored him but some school boards are following it. Thankfully some folks are protesting that the list is sus af. (it seriously bans books about the KKK and the supreme court in the same breath as guides about sexual health and lgbt narratives) - still less than thrilled this is happening. I also work with a pop up library for LGBT material so I'm feeling like we need to do something.
On the plus side been playing a lot of the Witcher 3 - its a very good game and I love me the enemy designs.
