I do wonder to what extent that's legally possible. Like, Coulson was introduced as a SHIELD grunt played by a character actor who gradually became more and more important, so lot of generic, non-descript traits. It's harder to see where Katy the character created for Marvel Studios ends, and Akwafina the already pretty famous person begins.
Legally the only real issue would be (I’m assuming) using Awkwafina’s likeness. But as far as introducing “Katy, Shang-Chi’s childhood friend” into the comics there’d be no issue because it’s all owned by Disney/Marvel.
I wonder how much of an issue likeness would actually be, considering that Sam Jackson Nick Fury was in the comics well before he ever made it to screen.
It could go either way. A while back there was an official Psycho comic adaptation based off the film. They didn’t ask Anthony Perkins and it later turned out he didn’t want his likeness to be used so they had to redo it to make Norman look different. So even though it was otherwise a direct replication of the film Norman is now middle aged with a receding hairline.
Awkwafina probably wouldn’t care either way in this instance but there are similar situations that could end differently.
Marvel Comics might instead base a 616 version of her on the Marvel Future Fight game, where both Katy and Wenwu were added as characters in their own right. (Wenwu was also added to Marvel Super War as a character in his own right.)
I haven't been keeping up, but when and how did this more movie compatible version enter the picture (His mother was originally a fairly normal American woman, albeit sort of unscrupulous and ambitious in her own right)?
