With the second issue we bring Supergirl in and the reason for that more than anything else – there’s a plot reason but the real reason is because I realized that in 80 years of Robin and 60 years of Supergirl, they’ve never had a conversation. We’ve never once seen -- in any comic that I can recall – seen the two of them interact with each other. -- Mark Waid

Supergirl and Robin dealing with what appears to have been a rather awkward date is a LOT of fun.

In terms of long term interactions he's right, but that was mostly because Silver Age Superman kept Silver Age Supergirl out of sight of most of the world for a worryingly long time. She had solo adventures, but barely interacted with other heroes.

In a flashforward story in Earth-2, where Mr and Mrs Superman are celebrating a significant wedding anniversary, we see the Earth-2 Supergirl is now married to someone who we never see except in silhouette, , but who was long assumed to be Earth-2 Dick Grayson.

In modern iterations, we've seen a newly arrived Kara having a crush on Nightwing in the Outsiders, and also Dick!Bat being a mentor to her when he was running the short lived version of the Justice League that James Robinson wrote.

But I'm absolutely her for more of these sort of interactions! :)

I love the casual "Hang on, we're breaking the time barrier" line

1) Wholesome Superman is great.
2) Infrasound whistling scene is text book example of how you make Superman & Batman shine together without diminishing one or the other.

I really like Supergirl's costume in this iteration. I'm neutral on the skirt (why point out that Robin has pants when Supergirl doesn't, lol), but I'm really digging the way the El crest and the shoulders and cape all work together.

I am curious how exactly they're breaking the time barrier. Is this just straight up old school 'Time Travel When They Go Fast' from like superfriends? Or are they employing a time travel device that the scans omitted?

It was etablished in the silver age that time travel in the DCU can be achieved by just Moving Really Fast :)

Now, is this pre-Batman spies on his allies so is gonna steal the idea from Magnus or Only Batman Gets To Spy On His Allies?

I'm guessing the former. But that's Niles Caulder, not William Magnus. William Magnus has crippling bi-polar disorder which, if untreated, causes him to create horrible things like robots made of radioactive metals. Caulder just does horrible things because he's a bastard.

I said this before, but...yes, Supergirl. He WAS raised in a circus, thanks for reminding him. I mean, sure he enjoyed being in the circus, but there's probably still some wounds there. Perhaps you'd like to rub more salt in there?

Give us surreal hints about the Supergirl/Robin incident, but never explain. Maybe flashbacks with reaction shots and half-finished sentences.

Batman: YOU SPY ON HEROES?!

Niles Caulder: You're right perhaps instead I should build a sentient evil space satellite to do that for me instead and then let it mutate people into cyborg techno-fascist horrors

Batman: Robin, write that down!

Robin: What?! No!

Batman: ...as a thing I SHOULDN'T do, obviously.

Robin: ...

This book has brought me back to monthly DC comics for the first time since Geoff Johns' Green Lantern run finished (and to which I only hung on out of loyalty to Kyle Rayner) and I love it so.
