This is the second reference to Sandman that I'm aware of in Kevin Smith's DCU work, Morpheus both appears and is important to the plot of Green Arrow: Hollow.

And, yeah, great City to start molesting and murdering kids in Funland. Especially considering Batman's overprotective stance towards children.

Please tell me he catches her.

I really need to know this. Lie if you have to.

Fuck, of all people they had to bring over from that series, why Funland? John Dee may have been high octane nightmare fuel, but he had the freaking ruby to make it work, which, for me, mitigated things. Funland was the kind of nightmare fuel you actually think could happen, which just makes him all the scarier.

I know he's in the DCU, that's not my point. My point is that the fact that, horrifying as his Vertigo incarnate was, John Dee was more of a "comic book"y type villain and that made him less scary to me, whereas Funland gave twelve-year-old me nightmares, and seeing him again was not a welcome surprise.

Legion and Sandman?? Together?? These are a few of my favourite things!

...Scans, please?

I contend that Funland was far more terrifying.

Oh gods. Since I first read Sandman I've now got a small niece. I'm not sure why, but that adds an extra layer of horror on, right there.

Why is it that no-one can ever handle a concept as well as Gaiman once Gaiman has left it?

Also, why would anyone want to mess with Nate Kreskin/Fun Land again? I was perfectly happy with the idea of him stuck in a dreaming coma until Morpheus died, and then give himself up to the authorities peacefully.

Funland wasn't stuck in a dreaming coma though, like all the attendees of the serial killer convention, Morpheus did the opposite, he removed their ability to see themselves as the heroes of their dreams, they would always be aware of what they were, and how petty a thing that was.

Or did he show up in Sandman anywhere else?

I don't think he appeared anywhere else in the series.

But I was under the impression that the whole thing Morpheus did to him would put the kabosh on him continuing his...being Funland. The dream sequence he had at the end of that arc seemed to suggest that.

I think it was left a little vague on purpose. It might be as you say, or it might be that they CAN still kill, and may well have the drive to, but if they do, they'll always be aware that they are killing because they choose to kill and are monsters, not because of some self delusion about their reasons.

They specifically show Funland's dream and he asks the kids for forgiveness for hurting them. Not saying he couldn't revert back to being Funland but yea...

Doesn't the dream Funland has happen when Dream puts him to sleep whilst rescuing Rose, and therefore before Dream issue his punishment to the assembled killers?

I instantly dislike the idea of Funland being in Gotham. He is a magnificently, sink-crawlingly appalling bit of nightmare fuel, precisely because he wouldn't be anywhere in the DCU where a hero would find him. He'd be somewhere out in the "real" world (so to speak)... being a REAL nightmare.

I think being in GOTHAM mitigates the horror. I mean, he's kind of the pedophiliac murderer in a crowd there.

I'll go for it anyways. Hey, it's a Sandman homage. I don't have to think about the gritty details of why he's there or even consider this a canon event for the character. If it brings back memories of Funland in Doll's House it's frightening no matter what.

Cause he wouldn't last ten minutes in the DCU before a hero saw, thought 'oh hell no' and gave him a permanent handicapped parking pass?

OpenID login is not liking me today.

Still hate Walt Flannigan's art, no matter who they get to redraw ink him.

Smith's interpetation of Batman's been pretty good so far--espicially in Green Arrow--but part of me can't see him using the word "turd." I can see him say "shit" easier then "turd."

Neither works for me in this context, something like "greasy, sweaty sack of lard" would be more Batman-ish somehow

Hrmph. Batman calling someone a turd. Even if it's in his own internal monologue.

No, Kevin Smith. I know Gotham is most likely in New Jersey, and that's your place and all, but no.

Wow.

Well, at least this comic is so bad in terms of writing, characterization and art it's lulzworthy. But stiiiiill, even for the laughs, not worth it to buy.
