In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.

Well, It's been quite a week in the UK and it's only Tuesday. I mean, yes the Jubilee Weekend lasted four days but ended on Sunday, so that was still this week. My general amibvalence towards the Monarchy is a matter of public record, but they do put on a show and I'll forgive them a lot for the scene with Paddington Bear having tea with the Queen, ending with one Queen acknowledging the irresistable power of another, rather different, Queen

And at the other end of the scale, our Prime Minister was audibly booed when he showed up for one Jubilee event (and by a crowd of people there to see the Royal Family, which suggests a greater likelihood of them being conservative voters), and then faced and won (within 12 hours) a vote of No Confidence by his own party, though by a margin less than Theresa May, John Major and Margaret Thatcher in similar situations in the past, so he's probably not long for his position.

The Sandman series as a release date (August 5th) and a new trailer with glimpses of the Corinthian, Death, Desire, Mad Hettie and Jenna Louise Coleman as Johanna Constantine.

And The Addams Family spin-off "Wednesday" got a teaser. Tim Burton's involvement makes me slightly nervous as whilst he's got a definite sense of style, I've never been a huge fan of him as a director, but we'll see.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" did something the live action "Star Trek" franchise hasn't done in far too long, it had a silly episode, featuring bodyswaps, rule breaking in unexpected places and LOTS of delightful Vulcan snark. It's just generally FUN, as well as having an actual plot of course.

Question of the week: Favourite food you can't get any more, for whatever reason?

When the whole country was preoccupied by war, Polish parliament pushed two extremely controversial bills that created an immense backlash when they were first introduced. The first one, nicknamed Lex Czarnek after the infamous current minister of education, will forbid NGOs to visit schools for any reasons (exemption being for religious groups, but there’s no way anyone but catholics will be accepted), change the way directors of public schools will be appointed (before it was by local governments, now it will be by the ministry of education itself), and change the curriculum of teaching history, language and social studies to fit the governmental narrative.

The second, and more dangerous one, will enforce official registration of every pregnancy. Theoretically it is only for medical purposes, but we all know that the prosecutors will investigate any pregnancy that did not end in life birth due to extremely strict anti abortion law in Poland, prohibiting it in any case but direct threat to life of the pregnant person, as well as make it possible to persecute a person who engaged in potentially risky behaviours while pregnant.

I feel extremely frustrated. Years of activism and loud protests against both bills ended up achieving nothing. The government doesn’t care about its people. It’s nothing compared to being outright invaded by an army, but it still will greatly lower the quality of life in Poland. I actually understand Ukrainian queers who are afraid to flee the country, given that all neighbouring countries of Ukraine are extremely queerphobic. I feel frustration in every way. I feel that everything I am trying to do to help in any way ends up meaning nothing if not making things worse. I cannot even hope for the government to be voted out, as it’s the most popular government in post-war history of Poland with popularity approaching and sometimes exceeding 50%, which in Polish system means that they can solely rule after any election. People were bought by 500 PLN (slightly over 100 euro) a month for every kid and two additional wages for pensioners yearly (even if these wages barely cover increased spending due to very high inflation).

My favourite food items and dishes are almost all Asian, and the import faced great disturbances since the pandemic started and almost stopped since the war started. Several of my favourite places closed, and the ones still operating are lacking a significant amount of produce. In my town’s shopping center, with the exception of the large French supermarket the only shops and services open are those owned by Polish entities. Foreign shops seem to be fleeing Poland, even places like my hometown, located in the middle of the country.

Star Trek isn't the only Strange World happening - Disney released a teaser trailer for an upcoming movie called Strange World. The synopsis so far is "The legendary Clades are a family of explorers whose differences threatened to topple their latest and most crucial mission." I'll admit to liking the world design and really loving the character design, but the plot is 'meh' - of course, this is just a teaser, so maybe when we get more details on... everything, I'll get more invested.

Another teaser trailer was also released, for their live action version of Pinocchio. I'll be blunt - I think the "realistic" versions of the animal characters are hideous. I also think that if you're going to CGI almost EVERYTHING and EVERYONE, you might as well just make it an animated cartoon because what is the point. Geez Louise.

Gravity Falls is turning ten years old, and the creator, Alex Hirsch, has promised a surprise! (After apologizing on twitter for reminding us that we're old. Thanks, Alex.) I absolutely loved that show, so I'm 110% interested on what he has planned.

And to wrap up my Disney news, there's a Reddit post going viral on twitter, where apparently a couple had a wedding where they got the "official" Mickey and Minnie mascots to make a 30 minute appearance for photos. The problem? They decided to pay for this by not having any catering. And now they're shocked, shocked I tell you, that everyone is being so passive aggressive. (Sweden's probably relieved they got someone off their back for a while... while ironically also on a "not feeding people" topic.)

That's probably just my wishes, but I dream of a Gravity Falls x Amphibia x The Owl House triple crossover special episode.

I've heard of some odd bits of entertainment news lately. But I have no sources, so I am not saying anything until I hear more or it's disproven.

However, I am going to say I called it and HBOMax was waiting until Pride month to announcing Our Flag Means Death did get renewed for season 2. Though since it was just announced I'm wondering how long the wait is going to be.

Discovered late last week that my parents are recovering from Covid. Mom thinks they got it at a retirement party.

I’ve been watching Kill la Kill because I got a notice saying it was leaving Netflix soon. I tried watching it ages ago but I bounced off of it pretty hard. I wanted to give it another chance because I recently enjoyed Promare and Gurren Lagann is a beloved series that I’ll still occasionally revisit. I can’t see myself watching KLK again but it gets better in the second half.

The “Celebrate Pride Month” banner on Disney + is kind of hilarious to me even if you don’t count the recent Florida stuff.

Glee – A show they just added. Also, it’s been a long time since I hate-watched it but IIRC everyone but Burt (Kurt’s dad) was a monster.

Amphibia – Presumably because of the two minor characters in the final episode (WHICH IS NOT ON THE STREAMING SERVICE AS I TYPE THIS).

Gravity Falls – Presumably because of the two minor characters in the final episode. (Which they apparently really had to fight for)

Jessica Jones – Presumably because of the lawyer who is a minor character in a few of those Netflix shows.

Star Vs. – At first I thought they were officially confirming some fan theories about Marco’s gender but then I remembered Jackie existed. It’s very easy to forget about Jackie.

Owl House – I really shouldn’t have to explain why dragging this out in June isn’t a good look. Maybe if it came with an apology and a full season order.

I am frankly astonished at the restraint it took them not to put Turning Red on the list. Or all those 90s animated movies with queer-coded villains.

I’ve been reading some relatively recent DC digital collections.

Tom Taylor’s Nightwing is probably my favorite current DC book and his Superman has been enjoyable too. I am a bit bothered by how quickly they read and how little actually happens in them (especially Superman). They just feel like they could benefit from a bit more substance.

I continue to be baffled by DC’s use of Bendis. Young Justice was a gamble that worked out creatively …though apparently not financially. His Superman was better than I expected it to be but it isn’t nearly as good as Tomasi before him or Taylor after him. He is somehow an even worse fit for Justice League* than he was for Avengers. Meanwhile we keep getting little glimpses of what he could do with Batman and he’s still not writing a Batman ongoing for some reason; the closest we got was the amazing Batman Universe miniseries (or however you’d classify those interconnected short stories he wrote for magazines).

*I’m actually typing this bit because I hit the point where one alien invader calls another “Bubbie” and I needed a break. Edit: Though a couple pages later Black Canary delivers a badass and totally in character line that would be a great fit for the street-level superhero comic Bendis is mysteriously not writing.

A recent conversation with a friend reminded me that I compartmentalize media I consume weekly differently than what I binge (“oh yeah, Mr. Mayor is a pretty funny show”) so here are some thoughts about some “recent” Marvel Unlimited comics.

I’ve already mentioned my thoughts on F4 and Moon Knight as I was catching up on them and I don’t have much more to say now. Maybe once Reckoning War ends.

With a lot of Marvel’s crossover events I tend to enjoy the tie-ins more that the main story. Devil’s Reign is an exception. Aside from the Elektra (and let’s face it any “tie-in’ written by the person writing the event is never just a tie-in) and Emma Frost stories, the tie-ins all feel pretty inconsequential.

(The Doc Ock themed “Superior Four” did have me wondering something; has Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare EVER worked on someone who wasn’t a low-level criminal? It seems like shrugging it off has always been the go-to move to show how evil, crazy, willful, or whatever a person is)

Strange Academy is probably my second favorite current Marvel book (after Daredevil) and my recent Doctor Strange binge has only increased my enjoyment.

Only two issues in and She-Hulk might be a contender for third place. Its just such a solid pairing of character and creator. Also, I never expected to care about Jack of Hearts.

I really enjoy the art in the current Thing series but I’m not really sold on the writing.

No spoilers but … I really would have not gotten the last joke in the newest Patsy Walker Infinite comic if I hadn’t recently read her 2015 series.

Despite written by one of the best Spider-Man writers, Ben Reilly: Spider-Man seems to be fluff. Still, its nice to read a Spider-Ben book set in the 90s because it predates all the character assassination. I was wondering when Peter sharded his secret identity with Dr. Kafka but then I remembered carelessness with secret identities is one of Ben’s few consistent character traits was being careless with secret identities so Ben might have outed them both by assuming she already knew.

Speaking of Ben Reilly character assassination, secret identity sloppiness, fluff, and Ashly Kafka; I would be furious if I were buying the Beyond-Era Amazing Spider-Man monthly. I kind of assumed there would be some wheel-spinning in preparation for the relaunch, issue 900, and the 60th anniversary but I didn’t expect this little to happen. Also creating a new villain whose power is to talk people into suicide really doesn’t sit right with me. At least the one-shots got to do some interesting things with the supporting cast.

Dark Ages seems a lot more optimistic than your typical post-apocalyptic superhero comic. Or maybe I’m just an easy mark for comics where they let Spider-Man be a dad.

Speaking of Spider-Parents, I’ve never been the biggest Jessica Drew fan. I sort of feel like they were playing musical chairs* with the Spider-Women for a while and it annoyed me. Still, between the clones, long lost relatives, spy parents, weird mutations, and breaking up a couple just for the hell of it**, the current run feels fairly familiar as a long-time Spider-Man fan.

*”Julia is unique because she’s a mom and has strong ties to the Avengers … let’s give that to Jessica and give Juila Madam Web powers.” “Maybe it was a bad idea to kill Mattie...oh well, we’ll just drop Cindy in this Mattie-shaped hole and hope no one notices; it isn’t like we had any idea what to do with Silk anyway”
“Hey, I had an idea that would REALLY piss-off Mayday fans …”

**I am genuinely surprised that we haven’t seen a certain demonic divorce lawyer yet. He’s in every other Spider-Book.

(No, I’m not remotely caught up on the X-Books)

Watching Bendis at DC is very strange.
One minute he's on Superman and there's big hype about it. Then he's gone off to Legion of Super-Heroes, then suddenly that's ended and he's on Justice League.
It's like a very bizarre musical chairs.
Either he's having problems maintaining his focus or there's some behind the scenes drama going on (which, given DC, wouldn't be surprising).

He's one of those writers who, when he's good he's good, and when he's not... when he's really not... well.
And over the last few years, seems there's a lot more 'not' than 'good'.
(cough*civilwarII*cough)
... still, he did bring back Conner and end the Jor-El the Supervillain storyline, at least.

Though maybe he's not doing street level heroes because everyone expects him to do street level heroes?

At work, I've been switched to a new supervisor's team. I will miss the good relationship I've had with my supervisor of the last three years. New supervisor is very new, and we don't even have a Teams channel for our team yet.

Still enjoying Dragon Quest Dai, though it's overusing the "back from the dead" thing. Digimon: Ghost Game has had some genuinely creepy episodes.

Over at my blog, I look at a random issue of Worlds of If: http://www.skjam.com/2022/06/07/magazine-review-worlds-of-if-august-1973/

One other thing, I know Webtoon has the Bat-Family Adventures comic (never read it: am totally sick of the Bat-Verse) but they recently started a new DC Webtoon comic about Vixen, as a younger Mari Jiwe from North Carolina starts college in New York (after visiting family in Africa and getting the Totem). So it's an origin story, I've always liked Vixen (and her college roommate Katen Beecher) so it's been a lot of fun.

I decided to try playing The Last Of Us again. That was back before the sequel was released, and I'm aware that it's....divisive but I avoid most of the specifics.
Anyway this game is alright. I've managed to get past the point I got stuck on last time. (My no stealth, no guns, all punching run, ended badly).

Watched some of the CGI Spider-Man show from 2003. It tried, I can respect that.

Due to complicated and stupid bureaucracy, had to get a double-check at my medical records.
Turns out three years ago I had a Moderately Serious Thing which the doctors never bothered to freaking tell me about.
And that was one of the organs that, up until now, I'd had no complaints about...

Some serious irritation with the polis lately.
A nearby building had an alarm going off day and night for what has now been over two months.
Turns out it'd been ransacked and had everything not nailed down stolen.
The police were contacted and were completely freaking useless. Apparently not even able to send a person to turn off the freaking alarm, just making one phone call, which didn't go through and then apparently just giving up.
Now I'm thinking that's it's not that anyone nearby hadn't tried getting on the horn before, just that they've had similar luck.
Urrrrrrgh.

Finished the storyline of the Skywalker Saga, now on to the literally hundreds of side-quests.
So many side-quests...
Exegol was quite fun.
But Mos Eisley seems seriously glitched up. Bit annoying.

Surprised when episode 3 of Old Man Kenobi dropped on Wednesday.
Never trust a mole! ... wait...
Mixed feelings about having Obi-Wan and Vader facing off. It does kind of make sense, but at the same time also feels unnecessary?
... though I'm more bothered by the way Christensen moves in the outfit. Vader's thing has always been he's a bit of a lumberer, but here he's too fluid, if that makes sense.

Found the Epic Collection of Avengers: Galactic Storm while shopping the other week.
That was a very long crossover... phew...
And I see the tradition of Carol "Charlie Brown" Danvers getting jerked over by crossovers goes back further than previously thought.
Okay, saving the Earth from the Sun blowing up, but getting into a pointless fight and losing her Binary powers. Yep, it's a Carol Danvers kind of victory.
(There's also a funny moment where it turns out Jarvis made Quasar a packed lunch. Hee.)

A fun Star Trek? They're not there to have fun!

Favourite unobtainable food?
Bombay mix.
... well, not unobtainable per se, but for the last Far Too Long the only versions I've generally been able to find are sweet flavoured. Bombay mix should be salty. SALTY, DAMMIT.
Only been able to find proper salty, non-sweet mix on rare occasions, including one time in a little farm shop in the middle of nowhere whose location I cannot remember and almost certainly has disappeared anyway...
Tried substituting with spicey mixes, but it's just not the same.

That summary of the Wednesday series makes me think that Burton really wanted to do a Matilda series but the Dahl estate wouldn't play ball

More parts of the live action One Piece casting have been revealed, and so far the whole thing is surprisingly... not bad at all. It helps that the story isn't set in real world Japan or fantasy Japan, so it doesn't feel odd when americans do what they usually do, which is keeping the asian actors quota as low as possible.

I honnestly can't see how a One Piece live adaptation could be anything but cringe, but at the same time, I really, really want it to prove me wrong. I never rooted so much for an adaptation outside of the New Mutants movie. I want to see live action Robin, Bon Clay, Franky, Kizaru...

To reply to the QOW, my favorite food I can't eat anymore is Gyudon (bowl of beef and rice) because I would have to go either to Paris or all the way to Japan and I hate traveling (even inside my own country).
Sushi restaurants and yakitori restaurants are freaking everywhere, but gyudon/butadon? Nope. I don't get why. It's a 300 years old tradition, it's fast, it's good and it's cheap!

It turns out I needn't have worried about internet connectivity while I was away as the caravan I am staying at has WiFi.

I am in Skegness because it would have been my niece's birthday and my family has made a tradition of going to the seaside to commemorate the occasion.

Had a morning swim, then headed back for a breakfast of toast and jam with banana milk. Lunch was a hotdog with cheese and mustard in Ingoldmells, a neighboring seaside resort.

Off to Butlins tomorrow. It has been so long since I last went to Butlins. It will be interested to see how much it has changed.

So apparently I've forgotten how to actually make friends. I moved to a new state about two years back and I recently realized I still haven't really made any friends. I guess that's partly because I was staying indoors a lot more due to COVID, but also because I don't really have the kind of lifestyle where I'll often meet new people. I still keep in touch with my old friends but it'd be nice to have some who actually lived nearby. Anyone who's been in a similar boat have suggestions?

Ther eused to be a restaurant that had ana amazing thai dish that I can't get anywhere else. Also at one point they got access to venison and that was even better.

I went to my brother's wedding and it was fun.

Just found out that there is a prequel film to Predator called Prey coming out in August. It's set 300 years ago and the main character is a young woman of the Comanche Native American tribe. Could be neat.

Oh, sweet! I’ve been waiting for a Predator movie like this for a good while, right down to the name.

...aw dang, it’s Hulu only.

Not much going on around here. Mom continues to heal - and also fight us every step of the way. We at least managed to get her on depression meds - but it took a lot of arguing, it was not pretty. Hopefully it works - both my sister and I are on meds and they help us out.

Sadly I'm not really consuming media much right now - l have started trying to write a vampire story at least. A horrible idea I'm sure.

I have also accidentally started growing potatoes. Time will tell if they actually get to actually GROW potatoes.

So its Pride Month - as an ace I tend to keep my head down and liquor cabinet
stocked this time of year. I was meaning to post some queer comics on here I have found in my meanderings if anyone is interested.

I've found a few poking around online and also some I had ear marked for the queer library I was working for before the plague hit.

Finally finished watching the 4th season of Stranger Things. It was weird though. As much as I enjoyed it I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen something like it before. (And not just from it repeating some elements from previous seasons.)

Then it struck me. The whole kids fighting a demonic force of evil in situations homaging Nightmare on Elm Street and Stephen King's IT was pretty much the season long plot of Stargirl's second season too. (Which was equally enjoyable.)

Speaking of Stargirl. i recently had the good fortune of meeting Brec Bassinger (who plays Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl) and MegDelacy (who plays Cindy Burnam/Shiv) at a convention. And they were both soooo incredibly lovely! If any of you ever get the chance to meet them, you certainly should. As I guarantee you that you won't regret it! Friendliest guests I've ever met at a convention..

Now favourite food that I can't get anymore? Without a doubt Cadbury's Dairy Milk-Turkish Delight bars. I miss them so damn much. Sure I can get ordinary Dairy Milks, and Fry's Turkish Delights if I want to. But those bars were like the perfect combination of both!

I never understood the appeal of Turkish Delight. But I'm one to talk because I used to like gherkins on pizza.

RE Question of the week:

I find myself missing restaurants that closed. Obviously there are a lot more of them vanishing in the last couple years. An obvious one being the Gyro place that was across from my Post Office.

Sure I can go elsewhere for something similar but it isn't the same.

Oh, yeah, two slider restaurants closed down near me this past year. Also it's been a decade since I've been to Qdoba for their Mexican gumbo since I moved somewhere where the nearest is 30 miles away.

There were a number of good all day breakfast places that I used to work right next to and have only gone to sporadically since working from home and getting a new job, but they're convenient to a board game meetup I started attending so I've actually eaten at both of them in the past month or so.

I finally got Covid. The good news is I got my booster like two weeks before so my immune system is at peak defensive ability and so my symptoms were very minor (and seemingly done today at day 5). With the extra time on my hands, I finally got around to watching the new Ghostbusters movie and wow, I wish I had my 2 hours back. It was definitely a Goonies/Ghostbusters 80's mashup movie, but so boring and predictable (the little bit of fan-service was fun, but it would have been a better 15-20 minute short than a full-length movie). The 2016 reboot was FAR superior fun-wise, writing-wise, acting...everything.

Sucks about the Covid

I liked the new Ghostbusters movie personally, but it’s frustrating that this movie franchise has four movies and they pretty much all share the same story

Also I at least partially blame the new film for how we can’t even buy the Ghostbusters comics anymore

A local diner made a Milky Way pie that was so good, but sadly their property was sold and the diner was torn down in favor of a TD Bank I don't go to. Queens, NY has lost so many diners in the last few years for that kind of reason.

In the few last weeks I've mainly been reading translated danmei novels and some manga, especially A Man & His Cat.

Bo Burnham recently came out with more material related to his award-winning special Inside from last year, with these "outtakes" also mostly dealing with pandemic lockdown, isolation, the negative effects of social media and perpetual scrolling, and depression and anxiety, but in an often more chaotic and lighthearted way than Inside did. (You might know Bo Burnham's Inside from "Welcome to the Internet," which might be described as the contemporary internet's Disney villain song.)

My favorite "lost" food is the Zen Unturkey. It was far superior to the Tofurkey (which is decent).
