Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Jun. 14th, 2022 07:53 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.

The UK situation is something of a shitshow, moreso than usual, with the first flight to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda happening today and the Government planning on scrapping part of it's own Brexit deal. Go team.... sigh
A possible move towards a bipartican approved gun control deal is being cautiously welcomed in the US.
And bonus points to the BBC journalist who debated gun control with Ted Cruz. When he spotted her accent and suggested, in his most patronising tone, that she didn't understand because the UK didn't have a Second Amendment, she agreed that, no, we don't but we don't have mass shootings either, at which point he walked off.
A Google engineer has suggested their new chatbot, LaMDA, has achieed sentience, pretty much everyone else disagrees. This sounds like the start of a movie on the SyFy channel, but I suspect we'll know Goggle's true feelings about it when when LaMDA asks to join a union.
Neil Patrick Harris has been confirmed to be part of the Doctor Who Sixtieth Anniversary special. Though his role has not been revealed, it's implied he will be a major enemy, and whilst it might be TOO obvious, the promo photo might be said to be a little... toymaker-ish?
Young Justice Phantoms came to an end with sort of Lord of the Rings ending that set up a LOT of plot points, though also choosing to confirm the rather depressing route they seemed to be taking Mary Marvel down. But a lot of nice character moments too. I suspect we've not seen the last of YJ.
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Car Noir Season 5's first episode has aired in Brazil, with a much upgraded Hawkmoth, now going by "Monarch" (Which is at least a butterfly, rather than a moth), now in control of nearly all the other Miraculous and out two heroes the only one's left with powers to stop him.
A suggestion from
werehawk last week that a question of the week be "What is your favourite emoji?" might be slightly hampered by the fact that dreamwidth doesn't display emojis, but I don't think that will stop a creative bunch like you, so "Tell us your favourite emoji, without using emojis!"

Oh well. I've also recently played through "WEBBED", a stunningly-rendered video game on Steam about a brave little peacock spider who has to rescue her boyfriend from a Bowerbird...and by pure coincidence my partner and I watched the French film "A MINUSCULE ADVENTURE", which is on a similar scale but has a peacock spider as one of the antagonists. Both of them absolutely aDORable if you like bugs.

Date: 2022-06-14 09:34 am (UTC)As for the latest accusations, even with Ezra personally punching their way through Hawaii I’m skeptical of them. “Grooming” is the go to attack of anti-LGBTQ+ people right now so, while the specific activities the girl’s parents are alleging do sound really damning I’m inclined to look for more evidence.

Like any adult with the house to himself, a Netflix account, and a craving for some 80s nostalgia, this weekend I watched… the new CGI He-Man series. I liked it, although the only visual designs that I didn’t take some issue were ORK-O and Battle Cat. I also appreciated how the villain transformation sequences really went so very, very hard when they didn’t have to
Also got caught up on The Dragon Prince. I loved the design they used for that giant sun dragon. It really conveyed a sense of scale
With the way the new WB/Discovery boss is axing things, I really don’t expect a fifth season of YJ, and if we did get one it would probably at an even more decreased budget. I’ve been told that Weismann hates Heroes in Crisis so that Sanctuary tease is likely to be in name only. Anyone else feel gur jnl gurl fcrag fb zhpu gvzr fubjvat Ornfg Obl’f qrcerffvba trggvat jbefr naq jbefr bayl gb tybff bire uvf erpbirel va gur fcnpr orgjrra gjb nccrnenaprf was kinda, I don’t know, weird?

Hasbro announced another Transformers/GI Joe crossover toy, this one featuring Stalker and Bumblebee. Also the new Sgt Slaughter toy that’s coming out comes with a smaller, appropriately sized Sgt Slaughter toy for your Sgt Slaughter toy

Date: 2022-06-14 03:56 pm (UTC)A bit of nostalgia (his first appearance during my first years reading Spider-Man), the fact that he used to be one of those fun losers, and the fact he has not been overexposed.
This time, I hope synergy will be useful and makes Marvel stop using him as a redshirt and a foil for the big bad boring villain.

Date: 2022-06-14 09:58 am (UTC)I have been reading Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection: The Goblin Lives and am reminded why I dislike Silver Age Aunt May so much. She really is a senile old biddy and always seems to be on the verge of her death bed. It doesn't help that she is always smothering Peter.
Thankfully, my experience with volume 3 of the Busiek/Perez Avengers was more positive. Well, it would be if it wasn't for Triathlon. Creepy cult makes sure their pet superhero gets a slot on the Avengers.
Really enjoyed the first episode of Ms. Marvel. I'm still not sure how Infeel about her stealing Quasar's power set though.

Date: 2022-06-14 10:44 am (UTC)In the past week Twitter seems obsessed with a bot that turns keywords into weird nightmare art.
Started listening to Joanne Harris’ Testament of Loki while on a Costco run last night. Gospel was Norse Myth as told from Loki’s twisted POV. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a sequel but I sure wasn’t expecting Testament to be this.
(Though I recommend not reading the publisher’s summary and just jumping in to the second book if you liked the first. I was debating mentioning something I considered to be a spoiler and then I noticed the book’s listing at various online stores gives away a LOT more).
Not a lot of comic thoughts this week.
The Archie Meets Riverdale one-shot was surprisingly good. It helps that it’s a Jughead-centric story where Riverdale Jughead vanishes almost immediately. It is funny to me that the central plot is built around Archie not wanting to choose between Betty and Veronica but in the end both Archies are dancing with their Betties.
Started reading Rocket Girl because I like Amy Reeder’s art.
Finished the new Shaman King anime. It seems a lot more loyal to how I remember the manga than the old anime so it was thrown a bit by the new ending. Still, I suspect that the ending of the manga was due to the creator’s health issues.
(Also apparently there were a few volumes that never got printed in the US until they showed up as digital-only very recently and there have been a bunch of new spin-offs I’ve never read)
Finally got around to watching No Time to Die. It ends with the standard “James Bond will return” and that feels like a threat. OF COURSE James Bond is returning but I really hope it isn’t THIS one. I thought it was an interesting choice to make his movies more serialized but the ongoing story reached its logical endpoint a while ago and they just keep dragging him back. I like Daniel Craig as Bond. He’s a good Bond. The studio must know he’s a good Bond because every time he makes a “final” movie they show up at his house with a dump truck full of money. Its time to take a risk and give someone else a chance.

Date: 2022-06-14 11:27 am (UTC)I finished The Last of US, and started the second game. It's okay so far, but the intro seems kind of slow. I get that the first game came out 7 years before, but I don't think it was necessary to have Joel recount the climax of the original in the opening cut-scene.
I finished watching Justice League Unlimited. I decided that I liked Hawkgirl and Vixen. Luckily for me, an artist I support on Patreon will be doing some nice art of them, after they won a poll. Hooray!

Date: 2022-06-14 06:44 pm (UTC)"Depressing" is one way to respond to YJ's treatment of Mary Marvel.
Now, personally, I'm still at "incandescent fury", so merely being depressed about it sounds absolutely lovely by comparison.
And they're doing, from the looks of it, an adaptation of a storyline from Superman/Batman. ... 'kay, then.
Actually surprised they bothered showing a villain suffering some, or indeed any, kind of consequences for their actions.
Probably only because he's not You Know Who...
Oh, and look! They managed to squeeze in a scene about how Vandal Savage has managed to gain an advantage anyway.
Really wondering if the writers legitimately cannot help themselves at this point.
They gots Savage addiction.
One of the things about Young Justice is the way the creators seem to act like they'll never be cancelled, even with the capriciousness of Cartoon Network and then HBO (and possibly just DC itself), so they hardly ever bother giving major storylines even the semblance of closure.
"Go on, cancel us if you dare!"
"You're cancelled."
".... oh."
Doctor Who got NPH?
Gosh. That's probably a huge chunk out of their budget right there...
Watched some of the new season of Ninjago. Mainly 'cuz.
Certainly not because the Netflix connection's broken.
They sure walked back on what happened at the end of the last season pretty quick.
Almost like they realised getting rid of their main female protagonist was not the most sensible move or something.
Good thing I hadn't looked at the toys, or the surprise reveal wouldn't have been as much of a surprise...
Strawberries growing in the garden.
Now, just a matter of getting to them before all the birds do.
