Her life was spent skipping between Walking Dead-esque disasters, taught by the greatest soldier in existence. Her background is more akin to Robin than most mutant teenagers whose life was normal until the day their X-gene activated. She is a teenager… but not a normal teenager, in any way whatsoever. Though what does “normal” mean anyway, right? -- Kieron Gillen

Oh, look, a power-hungry woman with the experience of centuries of evil having nothing to do with human oppression betrayed them. Shocking, I say. Shocking.

Tsk...shame. Selene never really got to appreciate how she lost before being killed. And then killed again. The most delicious thing about the defeat of the arrogant villain is the realization that they weren't nearly as good as they thought they were.

Well, she has time for that in the waiting room.

Though, like Hope mentioned, she's a pretty powerful psi and the waiting room is in astral plane... That's not a possible kerfuffle in the making, nope never.

Gillen still knows how to write Hope. I'll never stop enjoying big bad old villains getting utterly destroyed by the new generation.

I bet Hope got a full basket of Nova Roma delicacies after that.

Selene has been a manipulator and a power behind the throne for seventeen thousand years. This portrayal seems less subtle than I would have expected.

I also though Selene would be heavily into Krakoa, its like the bits she liked about Rome, mashed together with the modern age, which is her favorite so far, pluss infinite free life force.

You'd have thought, at the least, that she'd be patient enough to wait for another chance to join the council.

It's not just that she didn't manage to join the council, it's that the one who did win was a child. Selene felt insulted.

Rather a hot temper for a centuries-old immortal.

Not really. Just look at Vandal Savage. Or Loki (well, old Loki). Some immortals just don't get wiser with age...or maybe they just hit a limit.

I suspect the "Celestials protocols" will be mentioned in the A-X-E crossover. (Avengers X-Men Eternals, in case you didn't know.)

And the whole entry is -- "Hope we're being written by that guy who turned the Dreaming Celestial into a Variable Fighter."

Interesting, Paul Cornell made Captain Britain the same as Exodus is here, his power increases with other people's confidence in him increasing.

Unlike Shi'Ar Gladiator, whose powers depend on, IIRC, self-confidence.

You sure? I thought Captain Britain was self confidence too. When asked how strong he was, he replied that he was as strong as he thought he was.

Ah, I believe you are correct.

With Brian it seems it's now all about his own attitude.

I always enjoy Cyclops The Prepared. The info page was good fun.

I think I have finally put my finger on what annoys me so much about Hope. She is the best at everything, including other people's powers, despite (as far as I know) never once expressing any interest in learning anything from anyone. Except Cable, so i don't mind her being good at killing people with guns. Everyone else is always wrong, Hope is always right, and somehow the plot always vindicates her. In this case, what do you do if you're the most indispensable mutant on Krakoa? Lead the charge into battle against an invincible and deadly giant monster, but it turns out fine because she's better with Exodus' omega level power than he is. It's like plot armor for bad decisions made by a teenager with a chip on their shoulder. Alas, I think this means I'm just old and complaining about the kids on my lawn and their loud music.

Wait, isn't Selene super important for Krakoa not eating everyone?

I'm sure Krakoa doesn't need help. If anything, it means it doesn't have to share as much anymore.

She was supposed to be the one monitoring how much life energy it leeches off the populace. I suppose its symbiosis with the mutant population has been turning out satisfactorily for long enough that they can just rely on Doug communicating with it and do without a psychic vampirism expert performing periodic audits.

And if it does kill someone in some sort of melting related incident, they can just bring them back!

Selene didn't lose.

Yes, she lost this Quiet Council vote - but she just made herself the frontrunner for the next opening. She just showed that she's powerful and knowledgeable - but not so powerful that she can't be controlled. Sure, she's a backstabbing sociopath, but that's obviously not an impediment for a Council seat. By being stupidly impulsive and easily killed, she made herself a more attractive candidate. Because she doesn't look too dangerous.

Now she gets to sit around in the Waiting Room until someone inevitably suggests raising her to deal with the next crisis. Wanda's afterlife would probably a nice change of pace after 17,000 years, and being a powerful psychic and necromancer on a psychic plane probably gives her some opportunities for shenanigans.

It also probably wouldn't hurt to have a knowledgeable mystic examine the Waiting Room from the inside and make sure it's not actually an extradimensional gullet siphoning the souls of departed mutants from their proper afterlives so Chthon can eat them.

Yet.
