Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Jun. 28th, 2022 11:23 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
It would seem remiss, however, to not mention the upheaval and concern created by last weeks US Supreme Court overturning of Roe V Wade, making access to abortion no longer a natonal right, but determinable at the State level. As a gay, non-American man, I feel it is not my place (on multiple levels) to pontificate on this, but to support those better placed to do so as best I can.
We would ask that any such discussion remain civilised though. There are other forums better suited to some discussions than here.
I will note that, from what I can see reported, the precendent this sets on SCOTUS reviewing other decisions, relating to matters such as access to contraceptives and LGBTQA+ equality are also deeply disturbing.
A fatal shooting incident in Oslo, affecting three night clubs, one of which was a noted LGBTQA nightspot resulted in the cancellation of a major Pride event. However, a spontaneous march of solidarity still took place to the site of the shootings that afternoon, for which our unalloyed respect.
Obi Wan Kenobi came to what I felt was a satisfactory end (to the extent I'm not sure I'd want another series)
"The Umbrella Academy" season 3 showed up on Netflix and is proving to be as weirdly, enjoyably, asshole-ishly (not sure that's a word), dysfunctional as previous seasons.
Stranger Things Season 4 Pt 2 is arriving this week. I've not been able to get into Season 4 Pt1 as yet (Too much high school embarassment based stuff in the first couple of episodes and that's not something that's ever appealled much, though I'm assured it improves)

Date: 2022-06-28 12:41 pm (UTC)Well, the thing that was obviously going to happen has officially happened.
We were told we were being alarmist when one political party has spent decades chipping away at abortion rights while the other has done very little to protect them even though they fundraise off of it.
I expect them to go after gay marriage next.
Happy Pride Month, everyone.
(I still think interracial marriage is on their checklist too)
Maybe it’s just the trend of recent superhero movies that have been WAY longer than they need to be but my main takeaway from Doctor Strange 2 is how fast it moves. We all knew about the obvious villain reveal but I didn’t expect it in their introductory scene. Also really enjoyed how much they leaned into the weird magic shit instead of doing the “this is basically a science we haven’t explained” thing we usually see in the MCU.
PS: Bruce Campbell’s deserved what he got; what kind of monster puts mustard on pizza?
Speaking of fast-paced, I wish the final arc of Amphibia had more time to breathe. Still, it was nice to see so many returning characters (some of which I assumed were one-offs) and the time skip was appreciated. I didn’t expect it to go full Sailor Moon in the end when the previous powerups were more DBZ.
Ms. Marvel continues to be a baffling adaptation.
It takes a good guy with energy construct powers to fight a bad guy with energy construct powers.
I don’t think anyone really expected Chicken Thomas Edison* to be the series villain but I’m a little sick of watching MCU characters fight villains with the same power set.
*(Though “someone is abducting marginalized children” is a MUCH better plot than what this show is doing)
Then there are the changes to the origin. Putting aside that 616 Ms. Marvel would probably never have been an Inhuman if not for executive temper tantrums about mutants, I get why you’d want to go in a different direction in the MCU. I figured she was changed to a Nega-powered human because someone decided it wasn’t a great look having a heroine from a marginalized group be, well, inhuman. Wow, I was wrong to give them that much credit. They doubled down on the whole “not from around here” thing in a really uncomfortable way.
See? Damage Control is totally justified in harassing innocent people at Mosques. After all, some people who look just like ordinary Muslims might set off an explosion.
Nostalgia for better Ms. Marvel stories caused me to redownload some old comics. Then the Comixology app still being a piece of shit (so many pages failed to download) caused me to read them on Marvel Unlimited instead. Zoe has such a great background character arc in this series and a think Sheik Abdullah is severely underrated. Still a shame what they did to Kamala’s parents after Wilson left, though. I’m not going to pretend the Wilson run was perfect but … wow did the series decline in quality when the original creative team left.
I’ve also been reading …
Rucka’s Checkmate – Be Gay, Do Warcrimes
Nightwing: Fear State – Wow, that crossover tie-in really killed this comic’s momentum. The Batgirls story seems like it’s only there to pad out the collection. At least the Dick/Jason annual story was good.
I wish I knew what was going on with the new TMNT game. It came out digitally a couple weeks ago to some extremely positive reviews but the physical copy I preordered still shows a late August release date. Considering how long it took Limited Run Games to send the copy of Scott Pilgrim I ordered directly from them, that seems optimistic.
The penultimate story update for Dragalia Lost dropped this week. In terms of broad cosmic strokes, its going where I expected it to but I didn’t expect this story about friendship and reconciliation to have so many fights with multiversal doppelgangers of The Prince’s friends. Also, I didn’t actually expect them to address the romantic element in the end but it looks like they officially killed one of the more popular ships while implying the gross one could still happen.

Date: 2022-06-28 06:37 pm (UTC)More surprising than "characters we haven't even known for thirty minutes turn out to be EVIL" at any rate.
... but in all likelihood the next time we see Clan Destine they'll effortlessly slaughter their way out of DC custody. (yay?)
On the topic of baffling adaptational choices, with each episode there's a worry that one of Kamala's parents, most likely her dad, will be killed off for The Angst.
Not resting easy on that one until the series is over.

Date: 2022-06-29 08:36 am (UTC)I agree about Zoe's arc being excellent in the comic. It's a shame to see her reduced to the shallow queen bee Comic Zoe only appears to be. Not super thrilled about Kamala's dad being transformed into Bumbling Sitcom Dad either.
The racist federal agents saving the day by stopping the evil brown people was certainly a choice.

Date: 2022-06-29 08:52 am (UTC)Also don't see the problem with the new otherdimensional origin, other than that so far it's so generic. Right out of the sci-fi cliche warehouse. But I don't see how having roots from outside is _problematic_. Not in the genre that's had that kind of origin story since literally day one, with Superman.

Date: 2022-06-28 01:05 pm (UTC)Much belatedly, I got a copy of Piranesi. I won't comment too much on plot, since a lot of the pleasure is working out how Piranesi came to be in the House alongside him (or, rather a bit ahead, but the reader has advantages that Piranesi lacks). A gorgeous story, with more than a hint of Borges in it, if that interests anyone.
Now I'm reading Between Two Fires. Historic apocalyptic horror is an easy sell for me, and France during the Black Death is the perfect setting for it. Buehlman's demons are satisfyingly weird, too.

Date: 2022-06-28 02:00 pm (UTC)Well, it kills time until The Mandalorian comes back.
(Or the Bad Batch, I guess.)
And the clickbait articles going on about "surprise cameos".
Not sure either of those fits any definition of surprise.
Finished rereading Visions of the Future.
That had a lot of plotlines going.
And so many "space" sayings. Y'know, they used normal cusses in the movies. You don't need to space things up. It says "Star Wars" right there on the cover, pretty sure that gives a good clue what we're in for.
Started re-reading one of the New Jedi Order books. That's proving easier going. Weird.
My now quite old (and probably older than I think) laptop conked out over the weekend.
Bit upsetting. Especially since I was in the middle of stuff.
Stuff I'd been working on for months and don't got backed up anywhere else.
Not taking that well.
So far the madness is expressing itself in trying to see what a mash-up of Transformers, the Star Wars sequels and, uh, She-Ra would look like.
That's the baseline for current feeling of sanity.
(There might be some Visionaries and certain other Hasbro franchises bleeding in.)
Just having an insanely frustrating time dealing with stupid bureaucracy lately.
Not to mention rude, condescending, bordering-on-if-not-outright bullying.
Grr...
Watching Ms. Marvel got a bit interesting when a family member who up until this point I thought would have had no interest in it whatsoever came into the room and was terribly upset I'd been watching without them.
I like Nakia. She's great. (and to a lesser extent, the sheik.)
Though frankly, I'm surprised Jerkass Not-FBI Agent Woman had to be told to take her shoes off in a mosque.
I get the feeling she's been in mosques before. She should know the rules.
Wow. Didn't take long for Them to turn.
Seriously. They've been waiting for decades, and it takes one polite turn-down to instantly jump to attacking? Not even trying to manipulate Kamala? They dumb.
Whole slew of Transformers reveals the other week, including a new Goldbug, and a Robots in Disguise Scourge. And Burn Out, to go with the Selects Lift-Ticket.
And a whole line homaging the Wreckers comic. Odd turnaround, given how recent that was...
Looking through some old Marvel stuff, found out about The Fin and Moon Man.
Loving those two just for the sheer ridiculousness of their names alone.
C'mon. "The Fin"?
And on BBC radio, the new series of Dead Ringers is off to a moderately funny start.
... they actually had a few sketches not about British (English) politics for once.
Wild.

I have just read the Batman/Judge Dredd collection and it inspired me to check out thr classic Dredd stories. I did have to double dip however, as volume 2 of the Complete Judge Dredd Case Files didn't include the whole of the Cursed Earth arc. Those of you that have read it can probably guess which parts were missing.
I pre-ordered Capcom Fighting Collection, a compulation of various fighting games. Of most interest to me were the Darkstalkers games. Fighting games with sexy monster ladies? Yes, please!
Also, there was yet another version of Street Fighter II in the collection. Hyper Street Fighter II, I think. God knows how it differs from the umpteen other versions though.

Date: 2022-06-28 03:09 pm (UTC)We discussed the SCOTUS decision with our daughter over the weekend. We mentioned that if she knew anyone in need of a place to stay or transportation for a "camping trip", to give them our number. Daughter replied, "Oh, I already volunteered you, don't worry." Imagine my surprise. :)
Having a tough time getting motivated to write, though that seems to be improving slowly but surely.
And I picked up the latest volume of "Interviews with Monster Girls" the other day, and was very happy with the plot developments. Just sorry that it looks like the series will be ending soon.

Date: 2022-06-28 11:24 pm (UTC)have you looked at Ruri Dragon, which is available for reading online officially. high school girl wakes up one morning with horns. asks mom WTF, and mom says, "oh, yeah, been meaning to tell you, your dad is a dragon. anyway, gotta go to work. have fun at school, bye!"
her classmates think they are cool, her teacher could not be more laid back about them, (he just asks, you feel OK? tell me if you need to go see the nurse.)
then she sneezes and breaths fire, setting the hair of the guy who sits in front of her on fire, and starts bleeding from the mouth because her throat isn't used to breathing fire.
only 3 chapters out so far, but it is very cute and has the same level of cozy as Monstergirls (which is one of my favorites)

I've been playing a lot of Squardle when I need to waste time lately. My new favorite Wordle-like: https://fubargames.se/squardle/
Started watching Strange New Worlds recently. I very much enjoy this show (especilly Spock and T'Pring being a bickering, overly dramatic couple by Vulcan standards), but not all of the plotlines have been llowed to breathe IMO.
Attended a wedding this weekend as a friend of the bride. I don't want to tell people her new name for privacy reasons, but she now has the perfect comic book newscaster name. Her first name and last name now start with the same two letters and end with the same last letter.
I'm listening to a podcast called the Vanishing Act right now, which is very funny farce but hampered slightly by choosing to set it in the 30s and partially in Germany, including a German character who lies about being Jewish in America so people won't think he's a Nazi. From the FAQ on their website: "The Vanishing Act also includes recurring mentions to the rise of fascism and Nazi-ism in Europe during the 1930s. The show is a satire that does not shy away from issues of antisemitism and oppression, as well as the complacency of the larger public (including some of our main characters), but with a conscious effort to avoid harmful storytelling that may be “punching down” against marginalized groups. The goal is to always have the humor be used as a weapon against the would-be oppressors. We recognize the importance that storytelling has, and the responsibility of satirical works in walking the lines that they do, and maintain that just because a certain behavior is presented humorously does not mean it is to be emulated or even tolerated." To their credit, I do not believe that they are making light of Nazism, but I do feel like they're using it to get a bit of cultural cache that they haven't actually earned. It had a crossover with Forgive Me recently which makes it sound like the second season is a bit Doctor Who-ish.
If anyone wants some codes for digital copies of European scifi comics (primarily Valerian), I just noticed that a recent Humble Bundle gave me several redundant codes (I got one code for each pledge level and the last one gave me all of the comics from all of the pledge levels, so I have codes for lower pledge levels). They're provided through a service called Izneo which looks like a European, unruined comixology. Contact me if you want one of the codes.

Date: 2022-06-28 04:39 pm (UTC)Treated myself to Spidy-No Way, as I've yet to see it (and since Multiverse is now on D+ feel I'd like to watch them together) - now I just to find a few hours to sit and watch them.
What I have been watching (Kenobi, Marvel, Kim's Convenient Legend of the Ten Rings aside) is the first season of classic British sitcom 'The Fall and Rise of Reggie Perrin', which is academically fascinating as an examination of a by-gone era of work. And weirdly, laugh out loud funny in places still. I can *almost* recall seeing an episode or two in the early 80s, but this is the first time I've watched it from the beginning. Considering the TV landscape at the time and its comparator mid-70s sitcoms, it is wildly innovative. It is also flagrantly of its era in places too - and my eyebrows have (figuratively) shot off at times with some of the lines.
I've also been watching the Season 22 Doctor Who boxset - a lot of which I've not seen since they first aired. Not sure I'm looking forward to Timelash.
Finished The Relentless Moon last night, a book I devoured with as much pleasure as the previous two Lady Astronaut series. Roll on book 4!

Date: 2022-06-29 12:45 pm (UTC)Though it's perhaps a shame that ANH set up that Ben had had no real contact with Luke at all. It might have been nice if we even found out that some small, seemingly pointless things he might have taught Luke as a kid whilst doing odd jobs for Beru and Owen around the farm were handy in his later Jedi training, even if he wasn't the one doing the training for most of it.
I wasn't TOO sure about Reva going to Tattooine, as that's a place which shouldn't draw any Dark Side attention. If Vader or Palpatines wonders why Third Sister went BACK there, of all places, after nearly being killed, for example.

I've been rewatching Batman : The Animated Series for nostalgia, and even going in knowing it's such a great show, it's still so amazing to see how wonderful it can be in animation and writing. Last one I watched before tying these was Feats Of Clay - you can't have nightmare fuel like that without great animation!
In more personal news, my little sister is getting married on Friday - and before all the "Aw, congrats!" pile in, let me just say to hold those back. I'm basically being forced to skip a day of pay to celebrate one of my childhood bullies. My dad said the appetizers alone will take 2 hours and tried to phrase that as a good thing. So if anyone has any good time-killing reddit-subs for me to read, they'd be appreciated for the big day.
