Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Jul. 12th, 2022 06:43 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
NASA has released a taster image from their first output from the James Webb Space Telescope which will be being properly released today. To say it's breathtakingly beautiful is woefully inadequate. As described (and this is why poets in the sciences are important) the first image is a patch of sky the size of a grain of sand, held at arms length. on the ground, and yet the image captures CLUSTERS of galaxies.
Speaking of incredibly distant and ancient balls of gas, anyone watching the amateur hour reboot of the Benny Hill show which is the UK political situation may well be baffled by the goings on, to which I reply... Join the club! Cabinet Ministers resigning like lemmings off a cliff due to suddenly rediscovered "moral convictions". Uh-huh. (This is as accurate, if profanity laden, a summary as you'll probably find). And now the combination of Musical Chairs/Game of Thrones which is "Finding a new leader of the Conservative Party" gets underway. A fun summerlong event forall none of the family.
Globally famous athlete Sir Mo Farah has revealed that he was illegallly trafficked into the UK as a child to work as a domestic servant and that Mo Farah is not, in fact, his birth name.
The UK, especially the South, is facing temperatures of over 32 C for the next several days (and likely higher this weekend), which may not even be as hot at the norm for some members (a friend in Arizona is dealing with 47 C at the moment, which is INSANE), but is waaaay more than we're used to and dangerous for those not used to it.
"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" closed it's first season with an elegant little story that was both a tribute to a much respected TOS episode "Balance of Terror" with a touch of "Yesterday's Enterprise" (except this was more like "Tomorrow's Enterprise"). This has been my favourite new Trek in quite some time (not that the other's are bad, but this one manages such a nice balance of a classic feel whilst updating things, and honestly Pike is a brilliant Captain in his own right. You can believe people would be fighting for a posting on the Enterprise because of him... I mean not only a tactcian, but a diplomat, a captain who listens to his crew when they have ideas, he COOKS, his hair is frequently hilarious and his first horse was called "Sir Neighs-a-lot". What's not to love?)
So this is being posted a little earlier tha usual both because I hardly slept last night with the heat, and because I have a meeting to head out to.

Date: 2022-07-12 06:58 am (UTC)Decided to take this time to rewatch GI Joe: Renegades. This series is a lot more Snake-Eyes obsessed than I recalled. I guess that makes sense considering his whole character is to be inscrutable and badass but still. Interesting to go back to now that I’m so much more knowledgeable about the franchise. In particular their take on Dr Mindbender is a little more grating because he’d be a PERFECT modern take on Dr Venom
I’m up to date on Only Murders in the Building, including today’s episode. Still don’t have any theories as to who did it other than that the one person we’re meant to suspect is far too obvious
Been listening to an actual play podcast of Brindlewood Bay called Roll to Meddle. Brindlewood Bay is a ttrpg that can basically be summed up as “Cthulhu She Wrote,” or Murder She Wrote by way of eldritch horror, has all the players as meddling old ladies solving crimes who eventually start to realize something deeper and darker is going on. The stand out Mystery so far is Long Dark Teatime of the Soulless which takes a character we’ve never met before and has us grieving their death within the hour.
And then they recorded an in character add for Manscaped that I was not prepared for
Ended up binging the recently returned webcomic Basic Instructions earlier when looking for a single joke. It’s good stuff, you should check it out (basicinstructions.net)
I’ve dropped a recommendation here periodically to check out the podcast Eidolon Playtest where they play a TTRPG based on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Persona, but they’re currently doing a four part miniseries based on the music of They Might Be Giants using their new tarot-based resolution system that is so good and so funny. It’s only four episodes (only one of which is available on the free feed and two for Patreon subscribers) so why not check it out?
Seconding that Strange New Worlds recommendation. Also you get to see Spock and his fiancé T’Pring have the sort of relationship disputes that only Vulcans could have. It’s amazing.

Date: 2022-07-12 04:45 pm (UTC)I haven't seen today's OMITB yet, but I am enjoying the second season so far. They're so much fun.
I guessed the first season's killer early, although I did it by using genre-familiarity as much as clues within the show.

Its always “fun” to watch a video or listen to a podcast where the ad is just part of the content. At least that scene from Wayne’s World was self-aware.

Date: 2022-07-12 08:50 am (UTC)TLOU 2: I ...um did a bad thing and got to the controversial part. some of you probably know what I mean.
Ace Attorney anime: I guess it's a mostly faithful adaption of the games, but it feels kind of pointless. (Also subtitles for the bootleg DVD I got, switch between episodes. Sometimes they use the Japanese names, sometimes the English ones. oh well).
My brother got the DVD set of the 90's Spider-Man cartoon. Currently we've made it to season 2. It has a five episode story arc about Morbius. That's too much Morbius.
We also watched the CGI cartoon from the early 2000's. I got the feeling that the creators had ambitions. Stan Lee had a cameo in it. Weirdly he plays a minor villain who tells Peter Parker to go apeshit and kill people.
A few months ago I spent a while buying all the volumes of Sandman as cheaply as possible on ebay. A few days ago I went to a second hand book shop, and they had all the volumes on sale for $15 each. The moral is initiative is bad, doing nothing will lead to a better outcome.
This is a bad message.

Date: 2022-07-12 09:52 am (UTC)There is also an ongoing subplot about the Inhumans being trapped behind an impenetrable force field. Barely an issue goes by without Johnny whittling about freeing Crystal.
At the moment I am reading volume 11 of the Incredible Hulk Masterworks. This ismthe end of Herb Trimpe's run on art and the beginning of Sal Busema's run. The present plotline involved Glenn Talbot being brainwashed into being a Commie spy.
I have also been reading Dark Days: Road to Metal. Nothing really to say about it yet. I guess I will have more to say when I get to Metal itself.
I have also been reading Asterix from the start. I have just finished Asterix and the Banquet. I love all the puns. There was one Roman soldier called Fishfingus.
Asterix and Cleopatra is next. It was one of my favourite Asterix stories as a child, so I hope it still holds up today.
I tried somewhere different for my weekly takeaway at the weekend. Somebody at work recommended a place called Zizou's. They do burgers and things. Their many has a lot of choice, which I like. I can't stand menus that just have the same old stuff.
Any way, I had a chicken heetos burger with cheesy curly fries as well as sticky bbq jerk wings. I don't know where the Cheetos were in the burger, but they didn't cheap out on the cheese like some places (coughSubwaycough). The wings were massive and they weren't kidding when they said they were sticky. Would definitely order again. I want to try the corndog with all the nonsense!
I had a bit of a wobble yesterday. My invasive voices made me wonder whether the people in the Discord group I am part of would notice if I left the group. Thankfully, the other members assured me that I would be missed.
I would ask whether anybody here would notice if I left, but then I laugh. Of course I would be missed. Who else would say 'X is Mephisto' whenever a new MCU thing is out? ;p

Whoo. Glenn Talbot. Must be an extremely early one, didn't he die in like, the mid-70s or something?
Watch out for Metal. Some of it contains serious levels of X-Treme and Edge.
(especially - ugh - the Batman Who Laughs...)
Yes, you would be missed around here. Don't think you wouldn't.

Date: 2022-07-12 10:12 am (UTC)I briefly went down a Shinzo Abe assassination internet rabbit hole because of the Hideo Kojima hoax; I don’t recommend it.
(TLDR: some racist used a photo of the guy who made the Metal Gear games in place of a political assassin and then some “legitimate” media outlets ran with it. Also, there are a lot of conspiracy theories surrounding the death … with is unsurprising when you’re a major politician with war criminal ancestors)
Bert Kavanaugh is very concerned about his right to privacy this week. Someone should explain to him that that isn’t a thing anymore thanks to a handful of unelected religious extremists.
Getting a little sick of everyone making the exact same joke about Musk “pulling out” of the Twitter deal. I’m honestly not sure if its more or less exhausting than the number of people falsely claiming his account was suspended and then linking to a fake account that used a capital “I” instead of a lowercase “l”,
Watched Everything Everywhere All At Once on Sunday. I’ve seen better recent movies about martial arts and multigenerational trauma but its my favorite recent multiverse movie. It feels like I’ve seen a LOT of multiverse movies of late.
Watched Bill and Ted Face the Music last week. It isn’t the kind of movie that really needs commentary but it was enjoyable (though predictable).
So, Rise of the TMNT just kind of ends abruptly. Apparently, there’s a second season (well, more like half season) that ISN’T on Netflix (but is on Paramount+) even though the upcoming movie seems to be a Netflix exclusive. I hate it when streaming services do stuff like this.
On a related note: The Spectacular Spider-Man (which is not available on any streaming services owned by Sony or Disney) was just added to Netflix … but only the first season. I’m so glad they eventually made a complete series blu-ray for this one.
Wow, season two episode three of Only Murders in the Building sure got dark. I had a suspect pegged since the beginning but it seemed too soon to say; now that the Three Amigos have them as their own prime suspect, I assume I’ve been wrong.
The penultimate episode of Ms. Marvel still doesn’t really resemble the comic but it’s a huge improvement over the previous ones and actually added something interesting to the mythology. I am wondering how they’re going to wrap this up in one episode. Also, Kamala acquired two new accessories as she continues to uphold the long superhero tradition of waiting until the end of the first story arc to wear a comic-accurate costume.
(I really feel sorry for all those Smallville fans that waited a decade for Superman to get dressed.)
“Those Wayne Family Adventures webcomics sure are light and fun; I think I’ll catch up and …oh crap.”
Justice League: Last Ride is … fine. Zdarsky is a good enough writer that he can still entertain while telling a story we’ve all seen before*. Between this, Future State, the Batman/Catwoman mini, the OTHER Catwoman mini, and anything I’m forgetting, I do feel like there must be a 2021 memo floating around DC that EVERYONE is required to do a near future story that year.
*It felt a bit like Justice League Mad Libs. At first, I was wondering why this even had to be a “dark future” story when the hero and villain killed off as part of the incident that causes the League to disband are characters they’re constantly killing off and resurrecting in continuity anyway. By the end I was thinking “V’z cerggl fher vs Uny Wbeqna trgf cbffrffrq ol bar zber zheqrebhf pbfzvp ragvgl, ur’yy unir svyyrq bhg uvf chapu pneq naq or ragvgyrq gb n serr fnaqjvpu”.
Last week I said that Gentlemind was very different from Blacksad. I finished the second half this week and it’s clear that I was mistaken.
Despite not having read much of either character, I picked up the Groo/Tarzan crossover at the end of last month so I’d use all my Hoopla credits. Honestly, I enjoyed the side story with the creative team more than the actual crossover. I was a big fan of Sergio Aragonés on Batlash (I do miss those oddball Showcases/Essentials) and was wondering if there are any must-read Groo comics. I previously assumed – based on previous exposure to the character and a self-depreciating gag in this mini – that they were all telling the same joke but I’ve written off books I ended up loving before.

Date: 2022-07-12 12:15 pm (UTC)The main problems are:
1) I have absolutely no idea how to do it. I just started googling for video editing tutorials. My knowledge on the subject is zero and I have to learn everything from scratch.
2) I'm not a native English speaker, and I know for a fact that my pronunciation of many words is wrong because I learned English from books. Plus, I got anxiety. There is no way I'd be able to use my own voice for the videos. Which leaves me two options: #1 use no voice, only video clips from the show and text, or #2 get somebody else to record the script for me.
Sooooo...
Help, anybody? Advice, suggestions, tips for making the video?
Any volunteer to let me use their voice for the videos?
These are the metas, btw.

Date: 2022-07-12 03:06 pm (UTC)In the spring anime season I’ve only watched Magia Record finale (which sucked) and Virgin Road (which is an objectively good anime), both of which I frequently talked about here. In summer season I intend on watching Tokyo Mew Mew New, RWBY Ice Queendom, and Shadow House season 2. All of these started already airing, but I decided to postpone my watching plans until there are several episodes out so that I know if there’s anything to bother for – especially since Clover Works tends to play loose with their adaptations, hamfisting conservative values where they originally were little to none. While I understand some of their changes to The Promised Neverland and overall their adaptation was not as licking LDP’s feet as DarliFra, the relatively subtle change of focus in Spy x Family made me drop the adaptation after two episodes.
In June, I’ve read Nubia: Queen of the Amazons, Poison Ivy, DC Pride, Jane Foster and the Mighty Thor, Hulkling and Wiccan, Immortal X-Men, X-Men ‘92, Legion of X and Marvel’s Voices: Pride. I enjoyed all these comics, though in case of Marvel Pride only for the fanservice. For the series that already released their July issues, I enjoyed them too, though I am EXTREMELY annoyed that Nubia’s supposed past in Madagascar was not researched AT ALL. The comic portrays an ancient society resembling ancient (nomen omen) Nubia or Ethiopia with bizzare faunal mixture of ice age faunas of Africa, Asia and Europe, but no actual extinct Malgasy fauna. Speaking of Malgasy past, the island was populated by Southeast Asian sailors in early centuries of common era, and Black people from the Swahili Coast appeared there only about 500 years ago.
Thor: Love and Thunder seems to be the most unapologetic imperialist apologia of Marvel movies yet, which is almost impressive given how much Captain Marvel was into deep throating the US Army. It doesn’t even offer the supposedly/arguably better solution to the problem as Black Panther did. Disney really thinks the viewers are idiots.
As for political events, one good riddance follows another: Johnson, Abe, Wickremesinghe… I wish we will soon add Putin, Orban and Lukashenka to this list. Maybe the pope will finally resign too. I have more sympathy for Abe’s assassin than for the man himself, whose legacy was best described here: https://www.thedailybeast.com/shinzo-abe-was-japans-donald-trump-before-trumpexcept-he-pulled-it-off
My cousin is working on a photoshoot in Bari. I envy her, but I don’t think working abroad is a good idea currently :(

Date: 2022-07-12 04:42 pm (UTC)We finally have the answer to two long-term mysteries.
We know why She-Hulk is being blamed for this. On the one hand, I can’t say that I think hostiles taking advantage of a safe space is the fault of the person who created the safe space. On the other hand …maybe don’t let the people flying certain flags into the unmoderated “free speech area”.
We know why Future Ben is furious at Reed. Its simultaneously anticlimactic (since the horrible reveal is walked back immediately) and a huge WTF moment for Reed (you had to resort to THAT lie? I thought you were smart, Reed).
Also, I don’t remember if I mentioned it before but I feel really bad for Uatu after the special…especially since he had the best of intentions and the other Watchers are giant assholes.

Date: 2022-07-12 04:46 pm (UTC)Currently enjoying a few days off at home and would be doing various chores, but in this heat...nah. Although I washed the car today (first time in a year...and possibly the last time this year), so I'm counting that as my achievement of the day (or possibly week). That this time off coincides with the return of Better Call Saul is purely coincidental, but after cleaning the kitchen this morning (okay, two achievements), it was my reward to myself!
Finished off The Boys (solid!), got another episode into Umbrella, and have reached the 'mid' season finalé of Stranger Things S4 relatively unspoiled (although not sure how much longer that'll last). Having seen the length of the actual season finalé, I can see I'll be watching it over two nights.
Only Murders continues to delight (new episode today - huzzah), but last week's Ms Marvel fell a bit flat for me - oddly I enjoyed it most for the opening 20 minutes as I was more invested in the story of Kamala's Gt Grandmother that the titular hero. Which is odd, as I think the series lead is a delight. For a penultimate episode, it did kinda, sorta tie up all the main 'drama' leaving me thinking 'So...what's to come in the last episode? Cameos and fan service aplenty? A big advert for the next MCU D+ series? Hmn...'

Which is an interesting challenge. Though I suspect someone in the group is trying to test my credentials and I'm not sure how to handle that. Like - this is a free class - I'm not getting paid. The only reason I'm here is the stars aligned.
Still slowly working on the vampire story. And the research pile for it continues. Though I did reward myself with a book about books in bound in human skin - as a treat.

Date: 2022-07-12 04:57 pm (UTC)They've been living under the water fountain that's never quite worked.
A whole gang of the little things, hopping around.
(Yesterday found one having a swim in the thing's pump. Though it had gotten stuck until I helped it out with a bit of shovel and it promptly hopped back in.)
One of the bits of advice the UK... er, well, I suppose "government" is the word right now, for people facing the heatwave is "learn to love a brown lawn".
Way ahead of them there, having killed several parts of it already.
More difficulty than was at all needed having to explain to DWP the notion of paid employment.
The thing they wanted me to do, and I'm doing it, and I explain this to them and they still need it repeated several times.
*sigh*
And the shock reveal that Transformers Legacy will have a new toy of Armada Starscream.
(Okay, that one's not actually a shock. Figured as soon as it turned out.)
His wing does not unfold into a sword. Boo! Boo, I say!
oh and Beast Wars Inferno which is also good i guess.
(Okay, it does finally complete the S1 Beast Wars gang.)
Reading that Flashpoint Beyond.
Can't help but feel from some of what's going on in it that Geoff Johns might have been watching Young Justice.
Speaking of Flashpoint, was re-reading the original tie-ins.
Gosh, they're terrible.
That episode of Ms. Marvel.
Heeehnn...
That seemed unnecessary.
And the stuff with the villain seemed rushed.
A lot of it seemed rushed or weird. I dunno.
Damage Control still *****ing suck.
(Perhaps I was worried about the wrong sympathetic supporting character being killed off for The Angst.)
Listening to that Doctor Who: Redacted.
Wow. Lot of continuity stuff.
... Cleo starts off as grating, but she gets better.
Shawn... no so much. (Clingy jealousy is never a good look, hen.)
Bioware have announced that someone who wrote for Deus Ex and Guardians of the Galaxy is helping for Mass Effect 5.
I'm assuming that means the Guardians of the Galaxy game that was out a while ago?
Dunno what a Deus Ex is. Is it related to these Led Zeppelins I've heard so much about?

Date: 2022-07-13 09:03 am (UTC)My movie is still on Netflix's global top 10 this week; 2.17 million hours viewed. That's a quarter of where we started, so we're probably off the list next week, but I'm still damn proud that we got a second week on the list, when only RRR has more than two weeks straight.
Also, RRR is amazing and should be watched.
Ms. Marvel continues to be great, except for the Clandestines. I really wish they got half the care that Kamala and her family is getting. Instead, they show up out of nowhere when needed, do what the story needs them to do, and then go away again so we can get to the good stuff, which is Kamala and her family. It's the one thorn in an otherwise excellent, excellent series — probably the best Marvel series yet — and it bums me out.
I watched the first episode of season two of Only Murders In The Building, and it is so good. Really psyched for the rest.
