Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Jul. 19th, 2022 11:50 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
The UK is baking in temperatures our buildings and lifestyles aren't really designed to cope with. we've officially hit 39.1C, which is a new record, and may hit 40C. Stay cool and hydrated as best you can, UK folks! (And everyone else as well, of course, especially in those places with dangerous wildfires going on around them)
The unengaging media mediocrity morass which is the Conservatives choosing their new leader, and thus our next PM continues in all it's sulky, sniping unglory. As one commentator put it; To start with they staged TV debates so that people could see what the candidates were really like. They've now cancelled the next TV debatese because people were seeing EXACTLY what the candidates were relaly like, and it wasn't edifying.
I finally got around to watching Doctor Stranger and the Multiverse of Madness and was not overly impressed by the story, and thought some of the visuals were creative, even if they didn't do very much with them. But we have a NoScans post about it somewhere I might check in on.
Too hot to focus on much today, so will leave this short, but will end this with a suggestion: If there’s someone you’ve been meaning to speak to, or message, or just reach out to to get back in touch with, but haven’t got around to yet for whatever reason.
If you can, just stop what you’re doing at the moment, and go do it now.
We promise we'll still be here when you get back.

After being repeatedly being delayed by Barnes and Noble, the order I placed for the Impossible Jones trade got cancelled. It looks like the book might be rescheduled until October but I no longer see anyone offering preoders. That’s not a great sign especially for an indie book.
(Though some of the print runs for some major publishers have been microscopic the past few years too.)
RE Batman Urban Legends vol 2: I think I mentioned it before but I really hate the way they collect this series. Thankfully this volume is all Batfamily or Outsider (close enough) stories and not 50% Grifter stories that happen to be set in Gotham. Admittedly I’ve already read half the stories in this collection because I got worried the Tim stories wouldn’t be collected and bought the first six single issues digitally and some of the other stories are collected elsewhere. Of the new stuff, I thought the time travel story was the most substantial. I liked what the Jean Paul story set up …but it does just feal like setup. I was surprised by how much I liked the Kate story both because it’s a Fear State tie-in and because I don’t think I’ve actually enjoyed a Batwoman story since Rucka.
I’ve been reading Symbiote Spider-Man by that writer we don’t talk about. Having a male lead means the Greg Land art isn’t as porny as it could be but there’s at least one panel with Betty Brant Leeds that’s unintentionally hilarious. The Felica/May meeting is really nice and I liked that Felica didn’t see the fragile old lady that Peter sees and told him he should share his secret with her (though Black Cat never does ask Peter to go back to school). I love a good villain friendship and now Mysterio and the Spot is a team-up I didn’t know I wanted. I also enjoy the running gag where everyone else clocks that there’s something off with the black costume and they either don’t tell him or he doesn’t believe them. My biggest criticism is that most of these stories don’t really feel like they matter*. I know that’s asking a lot for a bunch of stories set in a very specific era of the past but after the first mini most of these stories take place in an alternate reality, another dimension, or end with a memory wipe. They do seem to be going all in on the MCU synergy though; even the King in Black prelude mini prominently features the 80s versions of characters being pushed in Phase Four of the movies.
*Though the brief Chameleon cameo makes the BND Obama story funnier in hindsight. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Catching up on several months’ worth of Big Ethel Energy. I tend to be bad about staying current on these Webtoons generally but this series would be exhausting to read weekly.

Date: 2022-07-19 12:01 pm (UTC)Watching season three we have gotten to the introduction of no-ones favourite Spider-Man character: Madame Web.
My brother also ordered the DVD of the 90's Fantatsic Four cartoon. It's....not very good. I think it's meant to be light hearted, or tongue-in-check, but it doesn't really work. It feels like a lost Hana-Barbera cartoon.
Also the Thing raps in this.
I've started Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I WILL find a Gerudo women and take a screenshot of her and her abs.
The government has rolled out a new unemployment system, and naturally several weeks after release the website is still missing key features, rendering it basically unusable.

Date: 2022-07-19 12:13 pm (UTC)At the start of last month, I made a post friends and family on social media could see which was a pretty big hint about a nifty gaming dice set I'd like.
Me: Just posting this here just to show folks.
Friend: You know you want them.
Me: I know my birthday is next month.
But...I'm not expecting to get them. Not for price ($20, 11 dice set), just that...I dunno who would. Besides, I checked the site two weeks ago and they were sold out. I'm not even upset, or disappointed. Just numb.
A quote from me: I don't have Trust Issues; I have decades of experience in being let down.
They are doing yet another reboot of Powerpuff girls (and Goster's Home, which seems to be aimed at a younger audience). This one had Craig McCracken involved (as opposed to 2016's PPG series) so I'm a little intrigued. I wish they'd just go full-bore with the humor of the original series this time.

And I have a more thorough mammogram this week for something the doctors couldn't make out the 1st time around. So, yeah, there's THAT to dwell on.
Oh, and I'm no longer on the voting registry for Ohio. THAT ain't suspicious at all!

A beautiful sentiment. And if any of you go this route, I wish for you that it'll go better than my own recent attempt. (Sometimes, you learn that someone you loved, and still love but had to leave behind...hasn't changed for the positive as much as you hoped they did.)

Date: 2022-07-19 03:06 pm (UTC)As part of an ongoing series... not so much.
What a disjointed thing this was.
Really feels like they nailed on the Djiin stuff because they weren't sure they'd get a season two so they just crammed it all in on the first go.
After all, not like there's some sort of untapped market there that would bring people back.
Hooray, four day weekend due to excessive heat wave!
The exact words used to tell people about going in were "don't."
And it's so hot so I can't enjoy it...
Might've been well timed, though, since everyone seems to have gone into complete meltdown.
Not quite at "trying to literally smash each other's heads in" but pretty close.
Also thanks to this heatwave I learned the cat is stronger than she looks.
Either that or just extremely determined / convinced she's a towel.
Went to look at prospective new dogs at the weekend.
Nggh... the way they look so hopeful...
(still really don't want to get another dog.)
Bought one of them Star Wars: High Republic books, mad on the thrill of having money to spend.
It was okay. But not more than that.
Kind of average.
Rewatching Muppets.
Ms. Piggy's season 1 design is terrifying.
It just looks... wrong.
Meanwhile, on other binge-watching news, a family member was watching Lucifer on Netflix.
They described it as being like a Carry On movie. Which is a very odd comparison to make...

Date: 2022-07-19 04:57 pm (UTC)I have been enjoying the Interviews with Monster Girls manga and I am thankful that the anime is just as delightful.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure are also on my list. JoJo doesn't seem too bizarre just yet, just a bit over dramatic. I'm just watching it for the memes though. Miss Kobayashi had me at cute dragons!
I have also read Man of Steel by Brian Michael Bendis. It... didn't suck. I wasn't at all interested in this new villain whose name I can't even remember. I do like how Bendis writes Superman though.
I'm not even mad that Lois got put on a bus. I know she goes on to have her own 12 issue mini-series that is pretty damn good as well. Always good to see Renee Montoya again.

Date: 2022-07-19 06:02 pm (UTC)Does anyone know of any good horror or spooky or creepy anime/manga/manhwa they’d recommend? From what I’ve heard a lot of things tend to end up being “OH NO BLOOD GUTS GORE HOW HORRIBLE”.
no subject
Date: 2022-07-19 07:23 pm (UTC)I'm a horror/thriller fan who has a weak stomach for gore and dislikes the tryhard edginess that's very common in the modern genre, so I'm always looking for that kind of creeping horror that gets into your brain and sticks with you.
One ongoing Korean anthology-style comic in English I really like: Tales of the Unusual at https://www.webtoons.com/en/horror/tales-of-the-unusual/list?title_no=68
The creator sometimes dips into the fault of "you maybe shouldn't be making a story about this very sensitive social issue you don't actually have a deeper understanding of" (two different stories featuring racism/transgender antagonist come to mind) but it's overall very solid fun, and you can tell the creator is trying to be understanding of different issues. Much of the horror is psychological or body morphing horror. Not too much violence, though it can go there. One amusing running joke (among many) is that the creator treats the comic like an anthology TV series and will "recast" characters like "actors" across multiple unrelated stories. Though there are some repeat characters as well!
Hm. Even though I love spooky, I don't have a lot of creepy stuff in my list to recommend that's anime/manga/manhwa. Most of it's by Western creators. Well-done horror is hard to come by.
I will also say, on the flip side, I absolutely hate everything Carnby Kim has done (Bastard, Sweet Home, etc. on Webtoons) despite stuff like Bastard normally being right up my alley. I'm guessing those two comics in particular were named after popular Japanese media to attract clicks. I'm apparently in the minority on my hatred of Kim's work, considering the two comics I named are still ultra-popular after being completed, and one got a Netflix series recently. *Shrug*
EDIT: Darn it, lost my link at first!

Date: 2022-07-19 06:29 pm (UTC)Usually there's an audio drama bundle around the same time as a comic bundle but I still haven't seen one.
It's been 10 days since I had COVID symptoms and all I am is a slight bit more sniffly than normal and the last test I took had a line so faint it doesn't show up in the pictures I took, so officially I am no longer likely to be contagious. I guess this means I can go to Comic-con this week without fear of contracting COVID from anyone or infecting anybody with it myself.
Only Murders in the Building seems to be setting up parenthood as a main theme for this season. Whether that's relevant to whoever the killer is or not is anybody's guess.

Date: 2022-07-19 07:22 pm (UTC)The stuff at the end of the universe with people collecting powers (It's Wolverine, but he;s the Phoenix! OH Wow! It's Doom, but he's the Ghost Rider and the Sorcerer Supreme and the Iron Fist wow so cool!) is tiresome, and the book really suffers at the end when it splits into War of Realms which is not collected, so it's just a bunch of nonsense by the final few issues. And then the tedium of Necro-Loki, which I might not even bother with.
