There are a few things in previous issues (in Vol 1 and 2) that say Pearl might have more “problems” than she realizes.

Example: Her boyfriend (though not her boyfriend at the time) asks her how long it took her to etch on the intricate full body tattoo she has.
“I don’t know.”
“You didn’t keep track?”
“I don’t remember doing it.”

I realise my understanding of Japanese mannerisms and speech patterns is filtered through translation to English subtitles, but.....In all the scans I've seen of this series, nobody ever seemed to talk like that. They all just sound like Americans to me. Is it me, or is it Bendis?

Ahh, I see. But I thought her whole thing was, Japanese, yakuza, etc? Though I haven't bee keeping up closely with the scans.

She’s of Japanese heritage but she’s still born and raised in America.
