Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Aug. 2nd, 2022 08:55 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
The passing of Nichele Nichols at the age of 89, deserves comment. (and George Takei's post on his friend is very touching)
The word I've seen most used to describe her is a "trailblazer" and in 1960's America her performance as a woman of colour being the equal in every way to the other officers on the bridge of the Enterprise ensured she was absolutely that and, as the anecdote she often told mentions, she was going to leave Trek to pursue a Broadway career until no less a person than Dr Martin Luther King Jr told her she HAD to stay, as her role as Lt Uhura was too important to young people to be abandoned. And she embraced that role and it's significance with grace and determination for the rest of her life.
If that was "all" she had achieved in her life then that would still be extraordinary, but she was so much more than that. She took the cachet she had earned from Trek and made use of it, volunteering her time to NASA to help recruit minority and women personnel to the agency. Dr Sally Ride, the first female American astronaut was a direct result of that initiative, as was Guion Bluford, the first black US astronaut and many, many more. What an extraordinary and wonderful legacy to leave behind.
The passing of Pat "Ursula the Sea Witch" has received a post of her own, but in another "July REALLY sucks as a month" moment Bernard Cribbins, beloved star of British TV and movies for something like 70 years, died at the age of 93.
From novelty songs and appearing in one of the big screen Doctor Who films in the 60's to being the voice of The Wombles (ALL of them) in the 70's, right up until his charming turn in pre-school show "Old Jack's Boat" in 2013-15, he retained all his skills as a comedian, actor and storyteller, with a voice which was as reassuring as a warm fluffy blanket, with just a touch of mischeviousness to it. He won a new legion of fans in the 00's as Wilfred Mott, Grandad to Donna Noble, in Doctor Who. He recently filmed some scenes to appear in next years 60th anniversary special, and Russell T Davies eulogy is as particularly poignant.
England's women's soccer team won the 2022 Women's Euro's, becoming the first major soccer title won by an England team of any gender since 1966.
After 37 years, Australian soap "Neighbours" broadcast it's last episode. That might not mean much to those in America and much of Europe, but it was quite a big deal in the UK and Australia. Future stars like Margot Robbie and Guy Pierce got their big breaks in this series, and came back for the finale, along with Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and some unexpected ghosts from the past. (Though Kylie's Charlene seemed oddly mute for some reason)
The trailer for Andor dropped
Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac - Battle for Sanctuary (That's a title and a half) dropped it's first couple of episodes on Crunchyroll, having moved there from Netflix. I've only seen the first episode so far, but gosh the Gold Saints are SHINY. Apaprently Masami Kurumada has been more involved in this season, having not been entirely happy with some choices made in the first couple of seasons (though too polite to mention which choices as far as I know)
Pixar is bringing us a series based on Cars called, what else "Cars on the Road"

Date: 2022-08-02 10:45 am (UTC)Meanwhile, finished off Strange Things V4 last night and whilst not a perfect season (what is?!) thoroughly enjoyed it. Mrs Llama was surprised (as she doesn't read genre media/news sites) that this wasn't the series finalé. I confess I'm not quite sure what's left to do next season narratively (beyond some unconcluded character arcs). Assuming Netflix hasn't gone belly-up by then, I'll still look forward to watching it.
Miffed Andor's slipped back a few weeks (was hot with anticipation until I saw the latest trailer and now I'm super-mad-keen). This looks very much up my street, as I loved Rogue One. Ah well, She-Hulk's almost here so no complaints there.
Got hold of the Dredd: The Citadel collection over the weekend. As I started reading Dredd back with the Apocalypse War, anything that references it is always a treat - four decades on. Felt though it was all a bit anticlimactical though, despite the good press I'd seen about the tale. Enjoyable but, nothing too special. Delved back into 'Every Empire Falls' and then probably back for a re-read of the awesome 'Origins' next I think. And then maybe way back to 'The Day the Law Died' - if I can recall which box it's in! (I moved 18 months ago...and my old Titan Dredds never quite got unpacked.)
In the unreal world I've slipped back into play Kerbal Space Program(me), and discovering how hundreds of hours in, I'm still such a total beginner. In terms of value for money - no other game has quite given me such a lengthy challenge, and repeat enjoyment over so long a time! And I still suck at so, so many aspects of it too. Time to watch another guide video I think...
Right, stopping reading the interwebs and back to writing this academic book chapter I keep putting off!

Date: 2022-08-02 10:51 am (UTC)Finished the 90's Fantastic Four cartoon. The second season was much better. I learnt stuff about the Inhumans, like how Black Bolt wants to marry his cousin.
They had an episode adapting Black Panthers first appearance. The episode treats T'Challa as being the first ever Black Panther, which is an idea that has since been supplanted by him being the latest member of the royal family to hold that identity. Not quite sure when that happened though.
Also young T'challa was totally trying to shot the fucker who killed his father, the only reason he survived is because the gun's recoil threw off his aim. Rad.
Well I finished The Last Of Us 2. The ending was weird. It reached the big climax, but then it kept on going, only it had to cram like five hours of plot into two.
A few months ago I contacted an artist about a commission, but they didn't respond. A few days ago I suddenly got a reply from them. Yay!

Date: 2022-08-02 10:52 am (UTC)Got more training at work for even tougher lines of business, and this week I'm back to mentoring.
Today is expected to have heat warnings in Minnesota. Ouch. At least we had some rain on the weekend.
Next weekend is ConVergence, which is still requiring proof of vaccination (so I am getting my booster) and masking.
Over at my blog, I make a desperate stab at getting more views by looking at a recently popular anime: http://www.skjam.com/2022/08/01/anime-review-spy-x-family/

Date: 2022-08-02 11:51 am (UTC)I haven’t watched today’s Only Murders in the Building but my main takeaway from last week is .. Znory’f tveysevraq vf n ubeevoyr crefba (ohg V qba’g guvax fur’f gur xvyyre) naq V jnf evtug nobhg gur frperg cnffntrf abg orvat gung frperg.
Finished the Muppet Show on Disney+. Now I need a new show to watch slowly when I’m not in the middle of something else. It’ll probably be a while since I haven’t even started things like the new Harley Quinn season. I guess I could pick the Simpsons and maybe never have to pick another show again.
I have been continuing with Schitt’s Creek. It’s funny that I first thought they were trying to frame Johnny as the “normal” one when he’s clearly not. “Yeah, I’m sure the ONLY reason your video rental empire went under in 2015 is because your business partner was a crook.”
While pretty funny, “Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery” is a very weird movie to me. I’m not just saying that because Daphne is lusting over an old man. I know people have strong opinions on the “real monsters vs fake monsters” debate but it’s really bizarre when they try to have it both ways like this since that results in neither version making much sense.
(“There’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for all this. Isn’t that right, talking dog?”)
The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries comic is so much better than it has any right to be. There’s a Scooby/Ace crossover that addresses something that’s always bothered me about the Bat Hound. I also really enjoy it when Mystery Inc is famous in-universe.
Weird Bendis dialog aside, I enjoyed the new Checkmate a lot more than Event Leviathan.

Date: 2022-08-02 03:56 pm (UTC)I think we were supposed to assume that KISS was in their prime in that movie.
I agree that having that finale was just... weird but I, for one, appreciated the sheer "balls to the wall" absurdity of it. But also I do like when they thread the needle between real and fake monsters (I believe I've gone on record as saying that I think a Scooby Doo mystery with real monsters can work but never actually has)
I don't know that I agree about them having it both ways made them not make much sense. Camp Scare is still the best Scooby-Doo movie IMO

Date: 2022-08-02 12:10 pm (UTC)I have also read the She-Hulk Breaking the Fourth Wall Epic Collection. I have already read the John Byrne issues of Sensational She-Hulk and was curious about the issues following his departure. I needn't have bothered. Steve Gerber seemed to have something to say in his run, but I don't have the faintest idea what it was. I think I will skip any further She-Hulk Epic Collections.
As for DC, I have been reading Dark Nights: Death Metal. I had been led to believe that it was full of eDgE, but was rather disappointed. It was nowhere near as ridiculous as I had been led to believe. Oh well, on to Death Metal then.
I am enjoying Hellblazer as well. I have just finished volume 17, which was part of Mike Carey's run. I have skipped the Brian Azarello run because I hear it is crap. Is that the case, or should I go back and read those issues?
I tried to re-read New Teen Titans, but gave up after three issues. I had forgotten just how unlikeable some of the characters are. Changeling is a creep, Kid-Flash is an asshole and Raven mind controls Wally in to loving her so that he will stay with the Titans. At least now I don't have to go through all the stuff with Terry Long and everybody becoming Deathstroke apologists when George Perez leaves.

Date: 2022-08-02 12:37 pm (UTC)Spent thirteen hours on Thursday being nightmareishly sick.
Still not actually recovered from that one. (Not sure if the pain medication is working or if the pain is just that serious that merely being really painful is a step up or what.)
Not helping is not knowing what the fuck set it off in the first place, and therefore how to ride out the after-effects.
But I did get some fancy anti-vomiting meds, and those really did do the trick. Yay for modern medicine!
Also, I think I don't have a job anymore?
And might not get paid for my last two months because of administrative screw-ups and / or possible spite?
(Which, apart from anything else is a mess with DWP trying to explain how that pay system works.
"You need to tell us how much you earned."
"But I won't know how much I've earned until I get it. I'm not paid on a fixed term basis."
"Okay, but you need to tell us how much you've earned."
"But I don't know!"
Repeat until someone smashes their head against the nearest wall)
*siiiiigh*
But I did find a Legacy Override at the local toy shop at the weekend.
Which is neat.
Apparently they actually are making a new Digimon 02 movie, and it's completely ignoring Last Evolution.
As it damn well should.
And it actually seems to have the 02 kids doing stuff this time.
Scary.
Still rewatching the Muppets.
Still got family members coming in riiight at the sentimental bits and being utterly unimpressed.
(Also, controversial opinion: The weakest part of the Steve Martin episode are the bits with Steve Martin.)
Noticing that the newest release in Marvel's Epic Collection is Kang War (or the Celestial Madonna saga. Or both.)
Gosh. What a coincidence.
Just about to gripe about how there didn't seem to be any LEGO for Wakanda Forever. Then I looked. Turns out there is. Yay!
... diggin' Big A's hat.

Date: 2022-08-02 06:34 pm (UTC)Did Dan Stevens just not turn up to work and they had to cut his whole storyline to pieces? Kathy Burke's story also had a lot of set up and then no delivery.
Marianne Jeann Baptiste's character looked like a claymation model in among the CGI people.
Jared Harris was pretty good though. He's always tonnes of fun
And is Karl Urban's accent always all over the shop, or was he just being inconsistent in applying one for the character. Fellow Kiwi Jay White has a similar wandering accent

Date: 2022-08-02 03:43 pm (UTC)There are obvious reasons that the physical book is being delayed until, like, Q4 but you can buy the PDF outright or preorder the book any time before it comes out and get the PDF free: https://renegadegamestudios.com/game-world/transformers/transformers-roleplaying-game/
It's compatible with the GI Joe, Power Rangers, and upcoming My Little Pony Friendship is Magic RPGs
The four episode miniseries of Eidolon Playtest based on the music of They Might Be Giants just wrapped up for free listeners today. It was really good and I recommend anyone interested to at least try out that series. (For those that care but don't recall, it's a playtest for an RPG based on Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Persona. The first two seasons use a PbtA version of the game but the miniseries use tarot cards for resolution)
Gencon is this week. I think I'll try to attend next year.
It looks like the new add-on packs for the bizarre but fun game Uno: Ultimate edition Marvel have been revealed: She-Hulk, Miles Morales, and Miss Marvel. Everyone has their own deck based on their hero and in addition to winning the normal Uno way you can also get everyone to discard their entire deck and win that way. Also each deck has it's own set of villains (for some reason Morlun is in the Black Panther deck instead of the Spider-man one)
Oh, I also got kidney stones this past weekend. They are not pleasant

Date: 2022-08-03 10:41 pm (UTC)I’ve seen a lot of rumors about other things getting cancelled.
And things quietly being removed from the app.
And them moving away from scripted programing.
And HBO Max going away entirely as things get folded into the Discovery app.
It reminds me a lot of the last time they changed hands.
It was a long time before I actually knew what was “safe” under AT&T and I assume the same will be true here.
Though now I have even more doubts about some of the cancelled shows that we were promised closure on; I need that Venture Bros movie, darn it.
Its weird to think that I’ve gone from wondering why Sandman isn’t on HBO Max to being thankful for it.
I mean, how bizarre is it when NETFLIX is the STABLE option?
