"As a creator, I love adding to the tapestry. Personally, I also never want to tear out existing threads. So when the Kin Crimson came into view, it only felt right to unify it with lore such as Erik the Red, Cerise, and the Fraternity of the Raptors. That's how we make it all matter, or hopefully, even make it all matter more. It's all relevant." - Steve Orlando

"Well, we know where and when to go next, so let's do this properly. We return to Krakoa, get Kate back, ask Forge to whip us up some stealth suits so we don't change history, and properly plan this out."

There's no time!

"Of course there's time! It's time travel!"

Ah, the Kin Crimson have devoted billions of years to keeping mutants from finding out about this earlier mutant society. Naturally, they kept the important time drives... on Avalon. Which was occupied by mutants for years.

I'm not sure these guys are very good at their job.

Their spokesman and most prominent member was Erik the Red, so... no, they're REALLY not.

Maybe the Shi'ar didn't forget these guys so much as "forget".

"Even Erik the Red's attacks were assessments, nothing more."

Oh, aye, sure. "Just testing you."

"I was just testing you! That's why my plan involved brainwashing a whole two X-Men and running away all the time! All part of my plan! My fiendish, fiendish plan!"

I think it's Jay and Miles who noted that that was Apocalypse's whole thing for YEARS. No matter how badly his plans failed, and boy howdy did they fail, he was always "Ah, but my TRUE plan can now continue!"

To the point where it started to sound like him desperately repeating his affirmations to stay calm "My masterplan is enhanced by this loss. My masterplan is enhanced by this loss."

So Vandal Savage from Young Justice even plagiarized Apocalypse? Yet another reason to hate that guy

Everyone wants to be Xanatos no one wants to put in the work.

deh_tommy: Gavla from BIONICLE. For when I’m feeling argumentative, confrontational or altogether serious. (Gavla)

One of the reasons I’m scared to watch Gargoyles despite how beloved it is is because I can’t stand those kind of villain sue “this was my plan the whole time” types. The Savathûns, the IDW Shockwaves, the Apocalypses, the Xehanorts, the Vandal Savages. And Xanatos is the big trope namer for their brand of scheming. The only time I’ve ever been happy with that kind of villain was Teridax from BIONICLE.

Eh Xanatos really doesn't IMO fit the this was my plan all along type. Sure there are times when he's shown to have anticipated folks moves and planned accordingly but most of the time Xanatos success has more to do with him having planned out multiple possible ways the situation could go and being very good at adapting quickly.

He also is willing to wash his hands and walk away when he looses and never goes in for Revenge.

I enjoyed him alot. He was less "Oh I never lost because of my secret plan, you'll see" and more "Oh that failed but I got this instead"

It's not that he can't lose its that he makes sure he gets consolation prizes.

...
... come to think of it, has Apocalypse ever properly succeeded at anything?

There's infecting Cable with the TO virus, and kicking off X of Swords, but apart from that?

And it only cost him his grandson.
Not that anyone seemed terribly broken up about that.

So, the ancient mutants easily defended themselves from the ancient Shiar, therefore the Marauders must travel back in time and alter history and... save them? From having had to easily defend themselves? Do I have that right?

The Shi'ar did return later, between the third and fourth scans, "as an army. And at its head, a living doomsday weapon hired to obliterate the mutants."

They still got pwned, but got in some good old fashioned 'mutually-assured destruction', so the 'first blood spilled' refers to both shi'ar and mutant.

What I don't get is how these ancient beings can be mutants, if they predate humanity. Surely they're not related? They are not mutated humans, they're a completely different species?

Thanks for the clarification. Someone should tell them that "your ancestors nobody remembers and my ancestors nobody remembers killed each other, therefore I'm going to kill you" is the most human thing possible.

I'm gonna bet on some ridiculous timeloop as explanation for the ancient mutants. Future Krakoans gone back in time to live, with Shadowcat to make her mystery box for whatever reason, and the Marauders have to go back in time to save them because that's what history says happened or something. I can only hope that history says Cassandra Nova never comes back.

From the scans:

“Threshold may have defeated us, but we outlived them. Our prescients foresaw their desperate lifeboats in time… and vaporized them upon arrival.”

And

“Most escapees were executed, but some were held in timedrives for study on a doomed Shi’Ar base, destroyed some years back.”
